Making Eid special for kids

Hi everyone,

So nice to have a separate board we can connect over.

I have a 2.5 year old so Eid is only just starting to become exciting.

this year I will be doing a bunch of different activities with her to make it special, like baking eid cookies, decorating to make it feel special, organic henna and presents on the day.

I am curious as to what others do for this age (or above) to make it exciting for their little ones. Share your traditions!

thank you

Salaam Alaikum OP- your day sounds wonderful Ma Sha Allah. Hope you have a good one In Sha Allah!

My DC are small too but eldest is starting to understand a bit more- In Sha Allah we’re going to have presents too, lunch at grandparents and depending on the weather, there’s a few funfairs happening in our local parks so may take them there. My eldest wants to look for the moon tonight- not sure we’ll be able to see much in the middle of the city but I’m encouraging it to get him into the spirit of things.

Some family members who have elder DC have a really nice idea of Ramadhan calendars similar to the Christmas advent ones- they make it all themselves, Ma Sha Allah they’re quite creative but it’s something I’d like to do in future too In Sha Allah.

Eid Mubarak Banner, balloons and personalised Eid sacks seem to go down well!

Scirocco · 08/04/2024 17:14

Perhaps it could be an 'Eid-vent calendar', @Elopelo .

DC's a bit younger at 2, but has been getting into the Ramadhan vibes with stories, making moon collages and lanterns, helping us with giving to charity. There's an Eid party at nursery at the end of the week, and we've got plans for food, toys and running around the park.

Card Factory has Eid balloons, banners and Eid decorated paper cups, plates etc.

Small gifts. (ASDA do Ramadan advent calendars which are quite cute).

Krispy Kreme has Eid decorated donuts but the flavours didn't appeal to us.

New clothes, Eid prayer at the masjid then lunch with family.

Looks like Eid will be Wed. Eid Mubarak.

Indeed! Someone needs to market this asap!

The advent calenders at the supermarkets are terrible. Theyre really fiddly and the chocolate falls out and drops to the bottom. We purchased these 30 day pill organisers this year from amazon.

Filled them with sweets in individual little boxes and decorated them with these

Will wash them out tonight ready to use for next year. A brilliant find.

I always put henna on my kids on the night before eid. Im not the best at it but the kids find it fun. We decorate the room we will be eating in. The kids help me make some desserts which we share with our neighbours. On eid day we pray eid namaz. We have our eid lunch and then play party games with the family. We do presents but dont go all out as it becomes ridiculously expensive (not in the spirit of eid) so each family picks another families name from a hat and they buy them presents and we set a budget. For the adults we do a secret gift giver. Then evening meal at another home. Then back home and complain about how we ate too much and promise to never eat like this again.

My DC are 6 and 4 now so are VERY excited for Eid this year. I didn't get a Ramadan calendar this year but InshAllah I think will do next year.
I plan to put some decorations up and presents in Eid sacks. I always get some Eid cupcakes from our local baker. Around lunch time the family often meets up at the Grandparents house and all take a dish or dessert each.
DD loves going to a coffee shop which we haven't been able to do during Ramadan. So we have promised her we will visit one in the evening.

Eid Mubarak for tomorrow everyone!

Salam all!!
Our Eid routine is - I get up super early so I’m not stressed out. Get some desi tea going. Nobody drinks it as everyone is rushing around getting ready for salah.
After that it’s a mad rush. I have a few presents for each dc, all piled up on the sideboard. I always have a banner and decorations up. I try but inevitably fail to take a family pic where everyone is looking at the camera.
I get all the kids in the car, load up the presents for extended family and everyone goes to my mums. It is very loud 😂After the money gifts, we’ll do a “secret sheikh” this includes all the dc and some adults (optional) I will always buy the youngest of each family a proper gift, and a family gift (usually edible) and I always get something for my sisters (the mums!)
We eat lunch ridiculously early, because nobody had time for breakfast.
In the afternoon, we have afternoon tea and lots of desserts. we’ll have party games (usually a general knowledge quiz) and the prize is normally sweets or something simple for winner/team.
Evening everyone goes to their in-laws or whatever other family they have. There is napping involved. Then we eat again. 😂

Peachyscream · 09/04/2024 06:18

Question- does anyone go to a chaand raat event? I’ve never been because I never have time!

Scirocco · 09/04/2024 06:43

@Peachyscream we used to kind of do our own pre-DC. We'd do a portable iftar and go climb a hill together and read Qur'an.

Parkingt111 · 09/04/2024 14:10

Is anyone going to try and sight the moon? I know it's not always visible in the UK but was thinking of taking the DC to the park or on a nearby hilltop to see if we can sight it. Its something they are quite excited about.
Day before eid is a mad rush at my house so hopefully I manage

Parkingt111 · 09/04/2024 14:13

I think it's sunnah to try and sight the moon too

Parkingt111 · 09/04/2024 14:16

Oh and henna is a must! As a child I don't ever remember eid without henna.
In those days we used to put a bag over our hand and sellotape and go to sleep with it, to get the darkest colour on eid day 😂
I think now things are advanced and you get henna tapes or then we just take it off after a few hours
