Completely from no knowledge, I mean? Are there teachers out there that teach adults to read music?

I would teach an adult.

My father did it. He now loves singing in choirs!

It's best done alongside an instrument that only needs a single line though. That way your muscle memory will help your visual memory but you only have 1 line to think about!

Ooh, thanks frakkit. I have no idea what you mean by an instrument that needs a single line - which instruments are those?!

Most that aren't piano! Guitar also works on chords so wouldn't be suitable.

Most wind or brass instrument produce one note at a time, as do string instruments to start with. If you look at music for a recorder there are 5 horizontal lines and one dot at a time. Single line of music = 1 stave (set of 5 horizontal lines).

I am trying to teach myself to play the piano. I really regret not having had any interest in it as a child, and in my job it would be a real asset. DS1 is having lessons and I am trying to teach myself using his books, although his teacher has said that she does teach adults if I am interested.

I can sort of read music (learnt in school) but only at a very basic level.

DS1 is completely wiping the floor with me so far though
