Ooh, is that him? Now that you've said it, his playing sounds so familiar. The Dreaming is my favourite albums of hers too (think we have probably discussed this before).

Am enjoying the prog despite the high preponderance of earnest expressions

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 21:48

it is familiar isn't it

i like this wikipedia entry especially this:

Like many musicians, Danny Thompson's life has featured brushes with substance abuse. During his partnership with John Martyn, their drinking and the excessive behaviour it spawned became the stuff of legend. In one incident related by Martyn, he woke up after passing out on a hotel room floor, to find himself under a rug which Thompson had nailed down, leaving only Martyn's head exposed. Thompson went about his business, eating breakfast etc., ignoring Martyn's pleas to let him loose.

Some of the po-faced 'tribute' singers could do with a spot of rug nailing in my opinion...

...now I like Nick Drake as much as the next man ('I agree with Nick'. Arf) but I don't think the songs transfer well when not sung by him...

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:06

ooh love robyn hitchcock though, he's a loony

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 16/04/2010 22:07

I'd rather they left Nick Drake songs to Nick Drake

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:08

well as he's dead isn't it better his music is still played live?

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 16/04/2010 22:09

nope, would rather listen to his records !

SpringHeeledJack · 16/04/2010 22:11

Did I just see a bit of Green Gartside out of Scritti Politti?

his voice is looooovely

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:11

but this way his music is heard by many who probably wouldn't have before, me included.

so i'll check them out now after hearing the covers

better than he just isn't played anymore surely?

...and they gave 'River Man' to some geezer I've never heard of...

('Teddy Bear' or summat)

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:13

am always impressed at how loyal nd fans are

OP posts:
MaryAnnSingleton · 16/04/2010 22:14

I suppose it's because I was introduced to his music years ago by a friend and hate them messed about unneccesarily- better to seek out the original versions.
Yes,that was Scritti's Green - my best friend used to swoon over him.

retiredgoth2 · 16/04/2010 22:16

I tuned in late...

..has anyone sung 'Pink Moon' yet?

My favourite. I should like it done well..

(in fairness to Mr T Bear, he's making a fair fist of 'River Man'..)

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:20

richard thompson's son is singing it now

OP posts:
retiredgoth2 · 16/04/2010 22:22

...and very well too.

My cynical soul takes a bow.

cyteen · 16/04/2010 22:41

The singers were a mixed bag (loved Lisa Hannigan and ginger Thompson guy, hated bowler hat woman) but the band was amazing.

I should probably declare though that I've never heard much of the originals. I am more familiar with the (much loved by me) Sebadoh cover of Pink Moon than the original.

cyteen · 16/04/2010 22:42

Has anyone heard Beth Gibbons' album with Rustin Man? This concert brought it to mind, Nick Drake was obviously an influence on her/them.

retiredgoth2 · 16/04/2010 22:45

...not heard that, Cyteen, though may give it a try (I like Portishead)

Still watching BBC4, and am strangely amused by ND's impossibly posh and plastic-surgery-sculpted sister. She's wearing a handily placed scarf which seems to indicate that the turkey neck op is yet to come...

cyteen · 16/04/2010 22:48

It's a lovely album rg. She has a great range of tone and the songs are very English melancholic iyswim.

hazeyjane · 16/04/2010 22:50

I am obviously a Nick Drake fan and didn't enjoy most of the covers, I have to admit. I think his songs are so tied up in who he was that I find them hard to listen to sung by someone else. A bit like that godawful cover of Somewhere Over the Rainbow by Eva Cassidy - no-one else can sing that song but Judy Garland, IYKWIM.

southeastastra · 16/04/2010 22:51

i am still watching and have to admit to liking the covers better sorry

feeling sorry for his background no wonder he was depressed

OP posts:
southeastastra · 16/04/2010 23:17

well what an unhappy chappy he was

RaggedRobin · 17/04/2010 19:30

i thought lisa hannigan and krystal warren's covers were amazing and i enjoyed green gartside and robyn hitchcock's duet. wasn't sure if green would manage "fruit tree" on his own, but i thought he pulled it off.

elliemental · 17/04/2010 19:34

omg I wish I had been able to see this. We adore Nick Drake in this house.
