I always miss it if I dont go!

Although the last 3 I went to were some of the muddiest ever 97, 98 and 2005 and that does get really tedious. It always used to be lovely the whole weekend...

MrsMattie · 27/06/2008 17:10

Why?@queen2shoes. Who says so?
I don't understand this attitude. Why are music festivals supposed to be 'guitar band only' affairs???

queen2shoes · 27/06/2008 17:16

there are loads of festivals with rap in them. but glastonbury never used to be about that sort of stuff. now it is just like any other festival. sad really. I mean kylie was going to play there.

Candi Staton was cool!

totalmisfit · 28/06/2008 09:49

i don't know why everyone's moaning about Jay-z. ok, i'm not a fan either, but of the Glasto stuff i've seen this year on telly, the worst stuff is crap like Editors, the Fratellis and the so-bad-i-want-to-stick-my-finger-through-my-eye-into-my-brain-and-just-waggle-it-around-'The Feeling'

this stuff just aint music. it's not just that i'm getting old and don't get it anymore - i'm only 27 ffs! The problem is these 'bands with haircuts' are utter drivel. I hated the 80's but these bands just insult the memory of the terrible decade they try to revive. Souless, tuneless, senseless shit.

daftpunk · 28/06/2008 10:34

just for you 2shoes

heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

(don't worry..it ain't jayz)

2shoes · 28/06/2008 12:01

that is rather good
but not as good as this

VictorianSqualor · 28/06/2008 12:12

I saw Jay-z on Jonathan Ross last night and thought he seemed a nice chap.

This was just after on 8 out of ten cats they were calling him 'Jay zed'
I don't think Jay-z's sound is right for glastonbury though, at all.

But I'm going to wakestock tomorrow so I don't care.

longingforaffection · 28/06/2008 12:15

Jay zed looked like Alvin from the chipmunks on wossy last night.

aDad · 29/06/2008 09:47

Saw some footage and looked like he drew a pretty big crowd and went down well then.

donnie · 29/06/2008 13:25

the editors were crap. Thought jay Z was pretty good though and I speak as someone who is NOT a rap fan. And I loved Amy, especially when she elbowed that knobhead in the face after he groped her.

Whizzz · 29/06/2008 19:11

I thought Jay-Zs Oasis 'tribute' was dreadful & out of tune. It would have been quite amusing if he had actually pulled it off, but it was baaad.

HermanMunster · 30/06/2008 11:38

jay z is a legend. probably in the top 5 rapers of all time and sensational live.
what's not to love about the man?

HermanMunster · 30/06/2008 11:39

obviously rappers, not rapers before the libel suits start flying

maidamess · 30/06/2008 11:39

amy Winehouse has something compelling about her hasn't she?. Kind of 'peek from behind your hand' brilliant. I wish she was not so slurry and nonsensical in between songs though.

puppydavies · 30/06/2008 11:46

there appears to have been an oversight: 41 messages and so far no-one's said that glastonbury's never been about the headliners.

glastonbury's never been about the headliners.

as you were

jojosmaman · 30/06/2008 12:17

I can see both sides, Jay-Z is not "typical" of Glasto but that's not to say it wouldnt be good (which it was by all accounts). I went to wedding last week who had a human beatbox act on, not typical for a wedding but worked brilliantly as it was different from the usual wedding act (yawn). As for the ticket sales, the only reason Glasto was not a sell out is because now there are a million other festivals throughout the summer who all draw big acts (and normally have better weather!). Artists don't get much money from CD sales anymore, most of the money is made from touring and merchandise so big acts are more keen to do the festivals now.

DaDaDa · 30/06/2008 12:21

I can't believe how positive the reaction has generally been to Any Winehouse's performance. She was totally out of it, out of time and off key by the end. I genuinely thought 'this is a career ending performance'. Bit no, seems people want to see a car crash.

I think it's very sad.

beaniesteve · 30/06/2008 12:31

Am just back from Glastonbury. It was fantastic. Only one day of real RAin (Friday) and even then it wasn't constant. The site had dried up by Saturday and there was so much to do. I saw Jay-Z and the begining of the set was amazing.

If James Blunt is the most of your worries at Glastonbury then I don't think you can be doing it right.

There's so much to do and see and so avoiding the stuff you don't like is simple. If all people can do is moan abdout 2 acts out of hundreds then - well, it's all a bit pointless if you ask me.

Get out and about, come out of your comfort zone and go and see the many other things at Glastonbury. If people make a decision not to go then good for them, but I always wonder about people who sit at home while it's on and moan about it.

For what it's worth you missed a great one. It had all the atmosphere and the weather of years gone by and after so many muddy years in a row it was just perfect. All the street performers were out, the sun was shining, the cider was gorgeous and while there were the usual fashion victim people in their skinny jeans and wellies (which they wore in the sun of course because that's in at the moment) but in the main it was full of people who REALLY wanted to be there. People who weren't put off by one act, people who knew how to have a good time.

It Rocked in every way!

ipanemagirl · 30/06/2008 12:40

I disagree very strongly about the no JayZ at Glasto opinions here.

I was listening to Westwood on Sat night and apparently Glastonb has a history of hip hop and rap that all these Glasto 'experts' just don't know about it. Jayz is hugely popular and not an idiot at all, I'd back him against Noel Gallagher in the IQ stakes in a conversation about most things except maybe Northern English football and how to have an English chip on your shoulder.

Glastonbury belongs to white boy guitar music no more than The proms belongs to one composer. That's just nonsense!

Just because some people have some odd sense of 'ownership' of the festival doesn't make it right to be prescriptive! Strange, bossy and narrow minded!

ipanemagirl · 30/06/2008 12:46

I saw Radiohead there in, I think, 1997 doing OK Computer and it was great but I can't say how bored I am now with public school boy angst rock like Radiohead and Coldplay. I'm just so over it and I wish they were too!

Cheer up massively privileged spoilt lads with your manor houses in Oxfordshire with their wildflower meadows!! Of course your music will get dull/unlistenable as you age.... accept it and go enjoy your piles of cash!!!

aDad · 30/06/2008 12:51

Sounds absolutely great beaniesteve!

PuppyMonkey · 30/06/2008 12:58

I once went to Glastonbury and never saw one main band while I was there - too busy doing other more interesting things!

GrumpyOldHorsewoman · 30/06/2008 13:01

Did anyone see John Mayer at Glastonbury?

I saw him at Brixton Academy on Fri night and he played for 2 hrs solid. Was truly awesome (but I'm a biased super-freak where he's concerned). I know he played Sunday and would love to know how he was received.

Still completely incredulous that people in this country only know him for his few famous girlfriends.

2shoes · 30/06/2008 15:26

PuppyMonkey you sound like me I loved all the food and little stalls.
