How do I find a record player loud enough?

Has to be Amazon because I want to be able to send it back without hassle.

So far I've bought two record players and two sets of speakers and they are both crap, they play the records of course but it's just not loud enough.

The speakers are supposed to be 80 watts and I'm wondering if I change the record player whether that will make a difference.

I don't know enough about this stuff to know whether it's worth spending a whole load more just to play my old vinyl records.

Does anyone have any advice please?

You need an amplifier to boost the signal in between the record deck and the speakers.

I know that much, but can't help you any more than that, I'm afraid.

I have a Bluetooth turntable now and it’s so much better. You’ve far more choice of speakers than you would have with a “traditional” one using amps/speakers. The speaker I mainly use is in a different room and so no problem with distance/connectivity when using a bt speaker. I prefer it as the quality of sound is so much better.

Can you post a link to the ones you've already tried.

You need an passive speakers with an amplifier, or active speakers.

I wonder if you are using the phono pre-amplifier on your record player?

Hi @Itsasecretnow could you tell me what one you have please?

I have a Jam Bluetooth record deck from Amazon. The reviews are good too on there.

Go to Richer Sounds, they will sort you out with something that sounds good and suits your needs. The cheap stuff on Amazon or in HMV is cheap for a reason. For most domestic listening you need an amplifier rated at about 30W max and speakers that can handle the same.

This. They are brilliant. My set up wasn't that expensive but the sound is brilliant.

OhBettyCalmDown · 02/03/2026 16:37

I’m another one for Richer sounds. They’re so good in there. They know what they’re talking about and what equipment you need. Our record player plugs into the tv surround sound as we don’t have an amp and all the other bits you need.

aLogLady · 02/03/2026 16:39

we have a set up recently tweaked (I learned a fair bit through the process). We have a record player with a pre amp, going through an amp, and then speakers. Non of the parts are the same age, the amp is my dads from the 80s, the record player is from richer sounds and the speakers came with a set up I got free from Freecycle but are great quality.

that’s actually a shout, why don’t you put out a message on your local Freecycle seeing if anyone has one to give you? It’ll be better quality than Amazon and will only cost you the journey of collecting! Even if you just get the turntable amp and speakers separately. A lottt of older equipment will be at better quality than what’s affordable these days.

BarbarianBabs · 02/03/2026 16:40

As PP have said you need a preamp.

onelumporthree · 02/03/2026 16:41

By loud enough - how loud? Do you want something for an outdoors event?

Without a preamp it will sound like it’s turned all the way down to lowest setting even if it’s on highest

Tiredmumno1 · 02/03/2026 16:51

If you get active speakers you won’t need a separate amp, I use a set off of this page and it goes loud. You’ll just need rca cables to connect the turntable to the speakers.

Oh my word, I just discovered my record player has a pre-amp on it.

Problem solved. 😀

Sorry for delay, I don’t get notifications on the app. I’ll take a pic. We’re trying to work out how long I’ve had it, since before Covid at least. It was a present from my dp and he always does his reasearch, esp for any kind of music equipment, so I know it’s a good brand. There’s probably a newer version by now but this one has been brilliant and I use it most days so would definitely recommend. I’m not sure how much it was, not sure I should ask dp that 😄

We have a Sonos Era for our record player. Plays throughout the house thanks to other Sonos-es in other rooms :)
