People you like who like bad music

So you have a friend who you really rate. Or a new partner who is fabulous in every way. Or theres an MN poster who dispenses sage and humourous wisdom in every post, and you just KNOW you'd hit it off in RL.

But then you see their CD collection / top 5 albums post, and their taste is UTTERLY at odds with your own. And at least one of their albums ranks amongst the worst ever made.

Do you judge them? Do you, in your heart of hearts think just that little bit less of them?

Or are you better than that, having left music snobbery long behind you?

Do tell.

I am that person

nickytwotimes · 11/06/2008 14:24

I do judge them. However, it then becomes an interesting point for discussions / arguments and adds to the whole relationship.

Unless they like Mika, then it's goodbye.

cestlavie · 11/06/2008 14:26

DW is that person...

I can't begin to tell you what's in her CD collection. The first time I saw her collection at university I almost wept. Clearly, this wasn't enough of a barrier to me marrying her though!

bonkerz · 11/06/2008 14:28

My Dh judges me!!
He likes punk....buzzcocks, weezer, smiths, morrissey, Who, Foos, sham69 etc etc etc

I like westlife, cascada, mickey modelle, 80s dance mix cheese basically!

Hassled · 11/06/2008 14:31

DH is that person. He would say the same about me. I loathe 90% of the music he listens to, while he doesn't even like the Beatles . It doesn't actually matter - I think shared taste in music/books/art etc is irrelevant in terms of compatability with friends, partners etc. The deal-breaker for me would be very different political views, I think.

talilac · 11/06/2008 14:48

You could be, Capp.. go and post your top 5 albums and I'll tell you..

Although I of course left music snobbery behind me long ago along with DMs and black eyeliner. Oh yes...

Actually, one of my university housemates had/ has the worst music taste. Her top albums comprised (amongst other shockers):

  • Mariah Carey
  • Celine Dion
  • Take That
  • Boyzone
  • Westlife

Her favourite song is 'My Heart Will Go On' by Celine Dion (if that's its proper name)... and yet she is still somehow a friend...

DaDaDa · 11/06/2008 14:54

Ooooooooooooooh, a love of Westlife would be hard to take.

MrsMattie · 11/06/2008 14:57

Oh God, loads of my friends have shite taste in music. Just spent the weekend with a close friend who's entire Cd collection consists of crappy muzak in the style of James *unt. I've got a friend who is massively into hard house (my idea of ear-bleeding hell). Another who loves drum and bass (oh please...maybe a couple of tunes, but not all bloody night).

Luckily Dh and I share a taste in music. I don't think I could have married a Blunt the *unt fan.

MrsMattie · 11/06/2008 14:59

By the way, I don't judge - honestly! Well, I judge the music, but not the person. Music to me is like fiction - it's great to listen to music / read even if it's Westlife and Jackie Collins you're into. Better than a life without tunes and words!

EsmeWeatherwax · 11/06/2008 15:00

I've got many rl friends whose taste in music I find woeful, especially my best mate, who is a huge fan of The Smiths/Pixies and all indie things of that ilk. Doesn't make a whit of difference to me. And I am what could only be called a strident heavy metal fan...

Although have to agree with Nicki that Mika might be a deal breaker.

BoyzntheShire · 11/06/2008 15:00

i am better than that and have left music snobbery behind me

oh alright, i judge a little , but like cestlavie, it doesnt get in the way of a good friendship.

EsmeWeatherwax · 11/06/2008 15:01

Sorry, Nicky

DaDaDa · 11/06/2008 15:07

"a huge fan of The Smiths/Pixies"

But.... but.....

serenity · 11/06/2008 15:08

I tend to assume that everyone else likes 'normal' chart MOR pap, and then when I discover differently it's a pleasant surprise I don't look down on people with a crap different music tastes than mine, because then I'd have no friends at all (I think DH and my sister are the only people in RL who I would go to a gig with)

bundle · 11/06/2008 15:10

dh likes:

Yes
Genesis
leg-of-time type folky nonsense prog rock

he knows better than to play it when I'm at home

Sidge · 11/06/2008 15:10

Someone's music tastes wouldn't bother me.

I have a wide and varied taste in music (ie I like all sorts of shite) and hope my friends wouldn't hold it against me!

Mind you I don't like DH listening to Radio 1 in the car, those idiotic yoof DJs wittering on in their mockney accents make my ears hurt and my teeth ache.

TillyScoutsmum · 11/06/2008 15:13

Dp is a big Dire Straits fan and also loves Genesis. We're getting married later this year

One of my best mates is a huge Westlife fan (goes to all their concerts, has screensavers of them etc etc). She's great though (despite being a bit mad, clearly)

bundle · 11/06/2008 15:13

westlife I can forgive, Genesis, no

Scampmum · 11/06/2008 15:17

I will be friends with your best mate, Esme. Strident heavy metal, on the other hand...

EsmeWeatherwax · 11/06/2008 15:17

DaDaDa...just not my cup of tea is all.

Although I do like Debaser.

cyteen · 11/06/2008 15:21

I'm more suspicious of people who don't listen to music, tbh. You know, the people who, when you ask them what you like, say "oh, nothing really, I sometimes listen to Radio 1 on the way to work, but I've never really had much desire to get into music".

DP's boss is like this. His parents don't listen to music and so he didn't grow up with any kind of musical influences, at all. It's weird.

talilac · 11/06/2008 15:26

Cyteen yes thats true! Better an obsessive love of Westlife than nothing at all.

i did lol when sil said she like westlife. but other than that. music taste is a personal thing so I wouldn't jusdge someone on it, as long as they didn't make me listen to it.

asicsgirl · 11/06/2008 18:26

i did once have a boyfriend who shared my taste in music to a spooky degree, but he was a cold hearted shell of a man. dp listens to krautrock and zappa but at least he has emotions
