Recommend a vinyl record player?

DH and I are both big music fans and often say we want a record player. It’s not his birthday for ages but I will have a look in the sales for good models.

Is there a go-to?
thank you in advance!

Richer Sounds are very good. We got Ds3 one from them a couple of years ago. I think it's Audio-Technica. Denon are good too. The staff are Richer Sounds are great. I would go into a shop if you're near one. https://www.richersounds.com/hi-fi/hi-fi-separates/turntables/?sort=PRICE_ASC.

Do not buy one from HMV. I can't stress this enough. DS2 bought one from there, it was terrible and they were really awful when we wanted to return it. We then went to Richer Sounds and got one from them.

Richer sounds!

Unless your into obscure vintage jazz and world music, vinyl is the latest wheeze from record companies / second hand dealers to relieve consumers of their cash, by selling them an overpriced, easily damaged item that will only sound good on a top end system. For most people the best format is cd, especially if like most modern music product digital processng/recording been used in the production process. In theory a totally analogue direct to disc recording, pressed on to new vinyl could be better than cd, but it probably won't be and if it is the majority of people wouldn't be able to tell.

Our turntable is bust and have my eye on the Project T1, or Argon 2 a bit cheaper. Have you got another stereo you’re plugging into?

If not get something that supports active speakers and add those. It’ll be better than something with built in speakers. Otherwise you’ll be buying into a full set of turntable, amplifier and speakers.

We've got vinyl already, if you’re just starting it can be an expensive way of getting music!

@queenofwandss you'd probably find dedicated hi fI forums useful op or look at what hi-fi reviews and the like

You honestly can’t go wrong with anything from Audio Technica for the price.

Adore my Rega turntable, with the Rega pre amp. Q Accoustic speakers. Bought as separate items but amazing sound. Also avid gig goer 👍🏻
Also recommend getting the Discogs app to keep track of your collection, things you have bought and things you want. Very handy!

DH wanted a record player, but it was important that it be portable so he could take it around the flat with him. We got him an Audio Technica Sound Burger, which is truly portable and Bluetooth (the Bluetooth speaker just needs to have an app, so you can connect as the Sound Burger only has a button); you can use anything from a cheapy £15 speaker to a crazy expensive £2000 set. I believe it will also connect to Amazon’s Alexa speakers. It can also be connected to speakers via a wired connection, if you already own wired speakers.
