am auditioning for xfactor on monday (yes yes I know, I must be mad, but I'm doing it with my eyes wide open and under no ilusions).

And I need a song.

I don't have one of these fantastically powerful voices like the whitney/celine sound-a-likes, and besides which I hate all those songs.

so far my short list includes "son of a preacher man" by dusty springfield, "the rose" and torn by Natalie Embruglia (sp?)

My fvoice suits country well although nothing screaching like Tammy Winette please.

ooh well done for going!

how about sandie shaw long live love?

HonoriaGlossop · 23/05/2008 18:54

oo! Good luck!

son of a preacher man - I think it's a bit of an ugly song, won't appeal to lots of people IMO

Torn is great but I think loses alot when sung without accompaniment actually

I think you want something emotional but that stands up better sung without backing

Sorry, not much help cos I can't think of anything

will have a think

oh, if you're good at country how about something by whatshername, shania twain - you're still the one - something like that

Something by The Dixie Chicks?
Good luck

barnstaple · 23/05/2008 18:58

Oh yes, and Joni Mitchell

There are so many ....

wannaBe · 23/05/2008 19:05

agree re something that can be sung without accompanyment - that's what makes it so bloody hard doesn't it?

ll I just came clean to my mum in the end. She thinks I'm mad but I don't care, lol. And she doesn't have as much disbelief in me as she'd like to have me believe, because we just had a conversation and she said "what will you do if you get through to bootcamp? to the final live shows? you'll have to be away for weeks! Even I don't think I'll get that far, not because I think im crap but because there's so much competition it's just unlikely.

Ooh you're going then!!!!

I saw your last thread, didn't post though as I had nothing of any use to add.

If you like Country how about 'I hope you Dance' - Leanne Womack - I love the lyrics. Or 'Iris' the goo goo dolls - another beautiful song which may perk up their ears if sung by a woman. Very very best of luck.

turquoise · 23/05/2008 19:13

What about this one www.youtube.com/watch?v=1B0I3wsZuMw

I can't find the Mary Chapin Carpenter(??) version on Youtube, but it suits a slightly country voice, really shows off a good voice, and is nice acapella.

I remember Rick Waller doing it way back on Popstars or something, and Simon Cowell saying what a clever choice it was.

wannaBe · 23/05/2008 19:14

ooooh I hope you dance - have never heard tht one before - definite possibility! now just have to lay my hands on a copy - that is to say update my paypal account so I can buy it, lol.

Oooh Iris!!!

Aero · 23/05/2008 19:17

Sting also sang Fields of Gold - lovely song.

turquoise · 23/05/2008 19:17

Or how about Eva Cassidy - but one of her less known ones. I love 'Hallelujah I love him so' - which is a Peggy Lee song, lots of good choices there.

Patsy Cline?

KD Lang?

tortoiseSHELL · 23/05/2008 19:20

What about a Carpenters one? Something like Rainy Days and Mondays or Top of the World if you want something more upbeat.

I would not go for anything that's too heavily associated with one particular artist, that you'll be compared to IYSWIM, so not 'Torn' - and loads of people do 'Son of a Preacher man'.

Can you tell I'm living vicariously through this one - would love to do it but sound like a cat being strangled.
