Are there any?
It all seems to be Pop and Taylor Swift on the board!

Personally my favourite composer is Gabriel Faure, bit more niche!

I wonder how many people came to learn about Faure because of Listen With Mother using the Berceuse from "The Dolly Suite" as a theme?
I don't suppose many on here are old enough to even remember that programme!

I do. And children's programmes on TV, Andy Pandy and the Wooden Tops.

Dvorak
Bruch
Baroque - Handel, Bach, Scarlatti.

Lansonmaid · 25/06/2024 09:12

Love Tudor through to Baroque myself - Byrd, Gibbons, Monteverdi, Purcell, Palestrina, Gabrielli amongst others. Heard The Sixteen sing Monteverdi's 1610 Vespers in Worcester Cathedral a few years ago and it was a sublime musical experience....

AlliumLake · 25/06/2024 09:15

Choral music since my Oxford days, and opera.

SummerBarbecues · 25/06/2024 09:19

I like Classical. But I think different from pop is that it doesn't go through phases as quickly. I mean there are composers that were increbilty popular and then disappears. And there are others that have been revived. But it's over a long period of time.

I fell in love with the sound of Debussy, Satie and Rachmaninoff in my 20s and that's how I started listening. Recently, I have been listening to a lot of Max Ritcher and Dvorak. I have gone through a Bach phase a few years ago too.

Have you picked up on the YouTube video of Martin Gester's performance of Charpentier's Te Deum yet?
The opening fanfares and drum rolls before the Introduction are fantastic!

A lot of it depends on ones mood at the time.
Some composers, Shostakovich & Bruckner being prime example, can be hard to "get into" but are VERY much worth the effort.

Me! 👋

mynewusername2023 · 25/06/2024 09:48

Currently listening to a classical playlist on Spotify while doing work as music with words is too distracting (although so is MN) 😂

Toughmonkeys · 25/06/2024 10:00

I listen to classical while at work. I find it helps my mood and stress levels. One of my favourite pieces at the moment is Pachelbel's Canon in D.

Pachelbel's Canon is one of my "feet up with a glass of single malt" pieces!
I bought the (not 100% authentic) arrangement by Jean-François Paillard on the l'Oiseau-Lyre label in '76 from Bindon Barracks NAAFI Shop in Hameln and one of the lads who ran his own disco taped it to use as his closing "smoochy number"!

Definitely an aficionado!

And far too many to even start listing on here...

Phineyj · 25/06/2024 20:00

Me.

Opera's my favourite. Normally I prefer grand opera, baroque or maybe Britten, but I played in a production of Candide a while back.It was wonderful!

I binged on Our Flag Means Death (on BBC iplayer) a while back and it had some interesting and imaginative classical music used on the soundtrack. It was rather refreshing. Everything from Schubert and Beethoven to Satie.

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 25/06/2024 20:03

I'm a big fan of Russian music - not so much the very modern, really love the Big Five.

WaverOfSticks · 25/06/2024 22:14

Ah, just listening to Alpinesinfonie on YLE Klassinen...

WaverOfSticks · 25/06/2024 22:48

Wow! Just one of the pieces that always brings tears to my eyes.

Same here.
Also organ music, especially Stanley, Alain, Vierne and Saint-Saens.

Not forgetting the wonderful Lefebure-Wely.

The opera Don Giovanni.
Vivaldis 4 seasons
I know fuck all about classical but those are all bangers lol.

geoger · 25/06/2024 23:19

Absolutely love classical music and listening it in the car on my way home from work is so relaxing and really one of life’s pleasures. Shoshtakovich is my current fave and I’ll always have a soft spot for Mozart. Love a bit of Bach and Bizet and a bit of Saint Saens too. Dvorak is also great as Greig. Not a fan of Chopin tho.

I went to a concert on Sunday - Shostakovich 3rd symphony and Carmina Burana. Brilliant! This week I have a ticket for ‘All Things Orchestral’ in Hyde Park.
