Musical theatre singing - often unmusical?

My teenage daughter is considering a Musical Theatre course. She dances and acts and has begun singing lessons (has a nice voice and is musical, achieving well on instrument). To get an idea of the standard required, I’ve started following (TikTok and Instagram) various institutions that offer MT degrees and I really dislike so much of what I hear! Lots of belting without phrasing, pitch slightly off. Does anyone else find this? I’ve been so surprised by the examples that some of the “best” institutions share. Do my ears just hear it wrong?

Maybe book her onto the summer musical theatre course at Tring Park School for the Performing Arts, 4-9 August. Other establishments might run similar courses. That will give her a good idea of what is needed, and you too on watching day.

Thank you Dr Jones. I’m not worrying about her level right now, I’m actually just puzzled by the singing I’ve heard. I’m classically trained musically.

I get what you are saying, some of it can sound quite unpleasant and almost intentionally discordant or flat. I do think that's possibly the fault of the composer rather than the singer much of the time.

I hear it that way too.

All power and projection despite amplification, poor tone. It puts me off going.
Women often very nasal.

I don’t actually enjoy the songs anymore either.
