Saw him at Brixton academy about ten years ago and he looked a complete mess then. Felt really sorry for him as I got the impression be was just being used by promotors. He shuffled onto the stage, looked confused, mumbled his way through songs before needing assistance to shuffle off the stage for frequent breaks. A fantastic stage presence and song writer back in the day. RIP

Rum, Sodomy & the Lash was the first album I ever bought with my own money. It remains a wonderful record today.

Shane was a bunch of contradictions. A middle class public schoolboy (He went to Westminster, of all places) who grew up in England but embraced his Irish heritage & Irish music. Pogues gigs, particularly in the early days, were absolutely shambolic. Both the band & their fans were pissed, and off their heads on any other available intoxicants, yet the music was wonderful, and the lyrics sensitive & poetic.

Given his lifestyle, it’s a miracle he survived 65 years. RIP, legend.

I remember asking for Rum, Sodomy & the Lash for Christmas blissfully unaware of the meaning of the title, my mum didn't react terribly well at first.

@SequinsandStiIettos thank you for the Haunted link - another favourite. I think Cait O'Riordain sang it on the soundtrack of Sid and Nancy - another version that's really worth seeking out.

Like many people Shane’s music was more than just music to me, it evokes specific times and memories and brings them back to me. I love The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, A Rainy Night in Soho and Boys from the County Hell. The latter was my dads favourite and I remember us merrily singing along in the car when I was small 😂 he loves the Pogues and I remember dancing to all the hits at his 40th.

A Rainy Night in Soho reminds me of falling in love with DH. We first met in January and our first few dates were in February in Soho. It's one of the most beautiful love songs ever imo.

Very sad. But people should actually listen to the words of Fairytale of New York.

Do you really think people who love the song haven't listened to the words?🙄

He won a scholarship to Westminster. Not sure I'd call him middle class. Born in England but spent early years in Tipperary iirc? Backwards and forwards like so many of us. It's why he could straddle punk and Irish trad. And why we felt he was one of us.

The Boys from County Hell was the first song I heard of theirs. I played it when I heard and had a wee cry.

So sad. Such a talented man. The soundtrack to my youth and some of the most fun gigs I've been to.

PerkingFaintly · 01/12/2023 17:18

Just coming in to raise a glass with you all and listen to old albums. As for so many of us, MacGowan and the MacColls (father & daughter) were the soundtrack to my youth.

Sláinte.

OrlandointheWilderness · 01/12/2023 17:24

Such a loss.
The genius of Fairytale is the juxtaposition between the incredibly beautiful melody and the harsh reality of Christmas for many. It's my favourite.

People do like to get uppity dont they?

Songs are stories, about all number of things. Sometimes the characters wont be nice people, sometimes they will. Sometimes they use derogatory terms about the other, particularly in folk music. Its part of the story

Anyway back to the subject, I would like to explore more of his stuff.
