Hi,

I wondered if anybody would like to have a support thread for mners who are trying to learn a new musical instrument as an adult starter?

I'm learning grade 4 clarinet.

My learning has stalled - I'd like to find a flute teacher

ThunderclapCloud · 26/09/2023 20:36

I would love to start something again. I used to plat the flute and the piano, though not very well!

CyclingLegs · 26/09/2023 21:36

Hi @howmanyflutes and @ThunderclapCloud ,

That sounds great! Would you like to start a mutual encouragement society with me at all?

I only play when my son is at school, and it would be really nice to have someone to chat to.

I belong to a clarinet discussion forum but it is mostly for very experienced people and that is not my situation really.

I'm looking for a support thread where it's okay to be keen but fairly rubbish.

Thanks!

Id love a support group here -I'm finding it hard to know what to do to progress/improve with no teacher although I am lucky in having a local community that has lots of music stuff going on and is totally supportive no matter what your standard

I think it's really hard t learn when you have children at home - I get so much more practice time now my dd has left home

It's also hard learning as an adult with no child background- hard but not impossible and definitely fun

Is there a flute forum like your clarinet one do you know ? I'll take any kind of guidance

This thread is music to my ears! I'm a passionate believer that adults can learn instruments, make music, and go on to be really good players and enjoy the personal and social benefits of music making. As it happens, @howmanyflutes, I'm a professional flute player and I ONLY teach adults. If you message me I'm sure I help and get you going again in the right direction with ideas about groups, repertoire, approaches, maybe even teachers if I know your area.

ineedtostop · 27/09/2023 07:40

@Thunderclapcloud do message me also. If there's enough interest I might start posting here generally, but I don't want to make the discussion too flute-cantered. Also I don't want to sound like I'm touting for business... which I'm definitely not! I just want to help and encourage if I can.

Gosh, this is brilliant. I'm really glad this is useful. Shall we just crack on them and see how it goes?

My clarinet is in for repairs at the moment but It'll be back soon.

It's great that you are all keen. :-)

I haven't started anything yet, but I'm looking into doing something a bit new ( I understand it's really good for keeping the brain healthy and I need all the help I can get!) At the moment I'd love to cheer you on though 😊

howmanyflutes · 28/09/2023 17:26

any idea what thunder?

Jorvik1978 · 28/09/2023 17:35

Joining in! I have played the flute for a number of years but bought myself a French horn to fulfill a childhood dream last year. I also joined a community orchestra near to where I live that has no minimum entry requirements (thank goodness!). It is so much fun!

CyclingLegs · 29/09/2023 12:18

That all sounds brilliant! @Jorvik1978 we have a french horn in the house and I have tried it and it's lovely to play. That's great that you are playing one too.

I have just signed up for an online course (not musical) I need to get going on that, but I'll cheer from the sidelines till I'm ready to pick up an instrument once more 💐 🎶

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 29/09/2023 14:32

Can I join in? Picking up the flute after along time without an (piano) instrument. Attempting to self teach. Hoping to find a teacher, as I would like to do exams.

CyclingLegs · 29/09/2023 14:34

@Alphabet1spaghetti2 absolutely! That would be lovely. Welcome the thread.

I'm going to have my first harpsichord lesson this week! I'm so excited. I've loved it for most of my life, ever since our Year 7 music teacher taught us about the Baroque period. I'm not very musical, no one in my family plays an instrument, but as soon as I heard it I was fascinated and I knew that if I ever did learn an instrument it would be this one. I tried to find a teacher once before, but quickly discovered how rare they are, so I thought it would be one of those childhood what-if dreams you sometimes think about but never get to pursue. I'm nervous, but I can't wait to start.

I'm supposed to be ironing right now but instead I'm wondering when it would be reasonable to buy my own harpsichord and install it in the living room. (The teacher lets people book practice slots on hers, so I'm not going to need one immediately, to DH's relief!)

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 26/11/2023 17:07

@cinnamonandnutmeg thats amazing! Please keep us updated with your progress. I didn’t even know that people could do this let alone buy one. -
