Beginner violin recommendations?

I'm hoping someone here will be able to help me. I've always wanted to learn to play the violin and at 41 I figure I'm not getting any younger and I should just go for it.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a reasonably priced beginner violin? I'm looking to spend no more than about £100 for now. I know that won't get me a top quality instrument but I'm reluctant to spend more in case I don't get on with it.

I've found plenty in the £50-£100 range but reviews are all a bit mixed. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks in advance!

I would hire one rather than buy something that will inevitably be poor quality due to your budget. My nephew spent your budget on a bow alone and he had only been playing for a year. All the best with good musical journey. Op

I bought a Stentor violin from bay for about £35- it's one of the harlequin ones so I paid about 25% of the retail value. Stentor are a sensible brand to look out for- might not be a great forever violin for a pro, but are perfectly good instruments for beginners to learn on and go through the early grades.

Ebay/Facebook marketplace are good places to look as it's not the easiest instrument so there are plenty of instruments out there here people decide to sell them on. Ebay is more risky if it needs to be posted though- we had one arrive with the bridge dislodged where it must have had a knock, though thr instrument itself was fine. Our teacher was happy just to pop it back in, but it has made me more nervous about having them posted.

Thanks both! I hadn't thought of hiring, that's a great idea. I will look into that. Stentor is one of the brands I've been looking at.

Stentor ones are good. I've got a not-beginner but not super pricey one, I'm about grade 5 having not really had lessons or progressed since age 16. It is perfect for me.

If you can afford around £200 you can get a really serviceable violin that will make a nice sound. Don't get a cheapy £100 quid one off eBay, they will have something wrong with them or be terribly made if brand new.
