Am I the only person who hated Glastonbury?

I really did hate it there, skanky, expensive, didn't sleep, HATED the toilets, couldn't wait to get home.

Breakfast with Fergal Sharkey.

This is not selling it to me.

They were staying in the £2,800 tepee glamping pads probably - or a really luxury Motorhome

TimBoothseyes · 27/06/2022 19:10

Me...but that's more to do with the fact that living where I do it's just an endless stream of helicopters flying over the house. Not too bad this year but some years have looked like a scene from Apocalypse Now, there's been that many.

RampantIvy · 27/06/2022 19:32

and metal 'slammers' (long drops with metal half doors that you had to simultaneously squat and grasp the half-height door closed! 😭)

They had them at Leeds festival for the campers. They were awful. Luckily the portaloos inside where the bands played were much nicer. I just did a day visit and was very glad I wasn't camping.

Seeing the crowds at Glastonbury makes me feel very glad that I can watch it from the comfort of my settee.

NormalForNuneaton · 27/06/2022 19:37

I went once back in the 90s (jeez does that make me feel old) - I'm glad I went just so that I can say I've been but TBH it was so exhausting, no escape from people and we had all our booze nicked.

I enjoy watching it on TV nowadays although this years line-up looked particularly underwhelming TBH

roastednut · 27/06/2022 19:40

I'm just back from my first ever Glastonbury (at nearly 50 years old). I went on a journey really. Hated it till Friday afternoon (we went Weds) as it was just so druggy and dance music and I was bored and hated the smelly loos (most are still the half metal door variety and smell like nothing you've ever smelt before - there are compost loos but nowhere near as many as the awful ones).
I was surprised by a few things actually. It's incredibly white middle class (which I guess I am) despite the coverage on bbc which I'm watching now (which attempts to make it look far more diverse). I found it quite sad really.

I’ve been a few times and absolutely hated it at least one year, can’t remember which one but the weather was awful, and the mud just got everywhere, even inside my bra.

I much prefer Download festival instead.

EmmaH2022 · 27/06/2022 19:42

I met two women on the Tube today, returning from Glastonbury.

they were carrying the biggest, most luxury duvet I have ever seen! 😂

I couldn't believe they lugged that there though. We had a little chat and they said how important sleep is...I can't imagine it ever gets quiet enough to sleep!

LethargeMarg · 27/06/2022 19:42

I went 1994 hated it . Too much crime , too crowded, too dirty. Think it's massively overrated

EmmaH2022 · 27/06/2022 19:43

PS they genuinely seem to have a lot of fun. Mid 20s I think.

I had to explain to them that I don't camp, we had a nice chat about bands.

roastednut · 27/06/2022 19:44

Just realised I never actually explained my journey! By Friday pm when I started to see some bands I got into it more and just tried to embrace it. Yes it seems like literally everyone takes drugs, litter is absolutely everywhere and bins overflowing, the toilets are so traumatising (yeah I know that makes me sound like a complete dick) that I hardly drank... but I tried to just enjoy it and the blue sky and sunshine and the company. It was ok and i can honestly say im glad I went... but I'd probably rather watch it on telly next time Grin

Drunkandalone · 27/06/2022 19:49

We had a fab weekend. It was my 4mo twin dds first time and such a great experience we were glamping. Paul McCartney made it even better

squashyhat · 27/06/2022 19:51

Never been to Glastonbury but DH and I ducked out of V many years ago after one sleepless drums 'n' bass night. I have since found a local festival which I go to every year but get to sleep in my own bed.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/06/2022 19:51

I've not been to Glastonbury but I mean that's festivals for you, surely.

Not sure what you mean by skanky, but generally re litter etc that's your fellow punters fault
Expensive, yup. Always helpful to take what food you can with you.
Ports loos are obv shit but long drops are preferable.
Lack of sleep, well depends on the issue. Did you pack properly? Decent sleeping bag etc? Ear plugs? Night mask?

But of course, yanbu to make your own decision on whether you enjoyed an experience.

megletthesecond · 27/06/2022 19:53

I hated it in the mid 90's. It was feral. Although I did find nice proper toilets up at the farm so I always went there and never touched a portaloo.

I'd like to try it again now the fence is in place. Hopefully it's less lord of the flies now.

theemmadilemma · 27/06/2022 19:53

The time I really enjoyed it was going with a stall holder. Private cleaner toilets and easy to find tent! 👏🏼

gottaloveascamhun · 27/06/2022 19:54

I went aged 18 and loved it but it was a once in a lifetime thing. Never tempted to go back. I loved the music, the people I met, getting stoned with random, the freedom, it was fun and unique. Hated nothing except the depressing Monday morning leaving the site with billions of hungover / comedown-depressed people and taking hours to get on a train home.

scrivette · 27/06/2022 19:54

Went in 2007 and loved it, despite the mud and rain and more mud. I have never seen so much mud in my life. The toilets didn't bother me, apart from the Portaloos which were vile.

We now go to smaller festivals with the children, have been to Camp Bestival and Car Fest and they are great. Hoping to return to Glastonbury when the youngest is about 10.

Very interesting documentary charting 50 years of Glastonbury on iplayer. Covers its darker times too.

4 Month old twins? How on earth did you manage??

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 27/06/2022 20:00

I have never had any desire to go. And all the descriptions above have confirmed that I never will.

Drunkandalone · 27/06/2022 20:01

Can’t believe some of the sad experiences here. Had the best weekend in a long time. Our daughters were absolute angels and slept like little Cubs so maybe that helped. However the hangovers can’t be helped this week

VanillaSugar2022 · 27/06/2022 20:05

Pink Moon glamping is your friend. Life changer.

Libertybear80 · 27/06/2022 20:08

Loved it both times but I was in my 20s. One time I just laid on a grass slope for 6 hours giggling.

Now I'm 55 I don't think I would enjoy it to the same degree 😁

Leftbutcameback · 27/06/2022 20:09

I knew I would hate camping so we took a campervan when we went in 2017. Long way to walk but much better for sleeping, cooking and washing!
