... not taught correct fingering technique / ad hoc

Not sure if there is a music/hobbies section, but since it I'm a bit annoyed I thought I'd post here.

Just wonder if anyone else has experience of lessons for pop/rock guitar? If yes please read on ... if not then skip :)

Context: DD is a very good violin player, and accomplished on piano and voila too. A few months ago she started teaching herself electric guitar (in a rock band with some friends). Since the Christmas holidays she's been having private guitar lessons. The teacher is a secondary school teacher, and an accomplished musician, highly recommended, fairly expensive and time consuming to get there/home.

DD does seem to be making progress, enjoys it but it seems very informal and not structured. For example, there seems no reading of music, seems to based around playing portions of songs, with no special emphasis on technique. As a teen I played some classical guitar and there was huge emphasis on fingering technique, posture, etc.

Is this normal for rock/pop guitar lessons? It's not my experience learning instruments growing up, or DD other hobbies to date.

😂

My DP is a rock guitarist and although he started off teaching himself he also took lessons and has never been too proud to pick up ideas from others over the years.
His fingering technique is excellent... world class...

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 26/02/2022 17:18

Quite relieved this is about guitars, tbh. It's been a long day.

Angryattrackandtrace · 26/02/2022 17:19

How disappointing 😂👌🏻

Longingforatikihut · 26/02/2022 17:20

Really sad that I went straight to music at the title (I play cello), unlike everyone else. I can practically hear the tumbleweed roll through my fanny.

Technosaurus · 26/02/2022 17:22

I was once a concert standard rock guitarist, in bands etc. Never read a note of music. Infuriated my Dad who was a classically trained musician, but for guitar you don't NEED to read it, you only need to be able to learn tab. It's a "nice to have" but not a necessity to learn the instrument, unlike, say, the piano where it's essential.

Most people who pick up electric guitars don't want to spend their time learning the "correct" way to play other people's songs. I wanted to play like Slash but I didn't necessarily want to play Slash's back catalogue. Once you've got basic chord changes and hand positions you can play almost all well known songs. If you want to be a lead guitarist there's a bit more work to do for learning solos, but even then a few blues scales and you're away. If you want to form a band and be a rockstar, you don't need to fanny about learning theory, it's quite easy to pick up the basics and build from there.

Only the very committed "shredders" go heavy on music theory. It certainly has its place and obviously needed for the "grade" exams but largely ruins the fun of the guitar for me.

You are all filthy!
My only thought was "What instrument? "

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 26/02/2022 17:26

Now that was a wasted click.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 26/02/2022 17:27

I assumed this would be music related (piano teacher). Rock guitar isn't like piano/violin. It actually might be quite complementary to her other instruments. I'm classically trained and whilst I'm glad for that, there is a place for just feeling the music/playing with others etc. Unless she plans to do classical guitar I'd leave it as it is.

TerraNovaTwo · 26/02/2022 17:31

👉Genuinely thought it was a fingering troll👈

🤣🤣🤣

Crying with laughter at this thread. I hope the OP isn't too embarrassed to come back!
ElvenDreamer · 26/02/2022 17:41

I am another one who clicked because it was obviously about music, classically trained woodwind player here, I have to talk about fingering and tonguing on a daily basis, no doubt you filthy lot would have a field day with that!
To the OP, a lot depends on what your daughter wants. I for example sit in a lot of pit bands, and the guitarists booked have to be able to read music excellently, so if that is something of interest, it's a very necessary skill, ditto session musicians etc. From the point of view of the teacher, maybe they don't realise she wants to do more, most school peris see an endless stream of kids who only want 3 chords and to learn some well known songs by rote, so maybe has made assumptions. On the other hand, that may just be their starting point to much more in depth work incoming. Worth an informal chat along the lines of 'she's really enjoying your lessons, can you guide us with how to support the practice of her technique etc at home/ what have you got planned next for her' . Yes rock/pop guitar is a different beast to classical, but that doesn't mean there should be no structure good luck!

WellThatsMeScrewed · 26/02/2022 17:41

Needed a laugh…but as an ex music player I also knew exactly what you were talking about.

Hi, OP. We'll move this thread to the Music board for you now. Do get in touch by hitting Report on the thread if you'd still like us to edit the title.

Very amusing
Also here for technique advice

charlie10k · 26/02/2022 17:47

Sorry I bothered.

MostlyNormalSometimesOdd · 26/02/2022 17:48

I'll stop sniggering at the title of the thread for long enough to suggest that perhaps the teacher feels your DCs background and proficiency with other stringed instruments means they don't have to focus so much on their fingering. (snort)

TheCrystalShip · 26/02/2022 17:49

Thanks @MNHQ :)

Actually there are some super helpful responses on the thread that are very useful to me. It's great to get that insight. So thank you all!

For those whose expected something else, I apologize :)

I'm not mature enough to read the title without giggling.

LondonQueen · 26/02/2022 17:52

Not what I thought when I clicked on the title!

ChaosMoon · 26/02/2022 18:00

DH is a superb guitarist who is often complemented about his fingering. It was one of the things that drew me to him

He learned violin first and then switched to rock guitar. His lessons started as your daughter's have, so he could get quickly to a place where he could play with his friends and enjoy it. Then he learned the more skilled nuances of fingering at a later date. It could be your daughter's teacher plans a similar approach.

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 26/02/2022 18:02

Tut Chaosmoon and their dh bragging!!
