What to do with a piano you no longer need?

We’ve got an upright piano which nobody plays now - my mum bought it for us in the forlorn hope that one of my children would display some musical talent (they didn’t).

We’re moving house soon and really don’t want to have to take the piano with us but I’m not sure what to do with it. Nobody seems to want to buy a piano but it’s in really good condition so I’d hate it to be thrown away. Any ideas? I’m happy to donate it to a good cause

See if a local school wants it.

My brother struggled to give his away. Many people dont have room for them

Free to a good home. It's going to cost them at least £100 for a removal firm.

Does your area have a schools music service. You could get in touch with them and say to their teachers to pass on the news to any pupil who needs a piano. Lots start with a keyboard.

Billybagpuss · 27/01/2022 13:01

Is it decent quality, I often have students who could do with one.

AtLeastPretendToCare · 27/01/2022 13:03

I regularly see them being offered on Facebook for free. The cost comes in moving them properly and then getting retuned. So even if you give away there will be a cost to recipient.

Please don't throw it away. If it's not been played much I'm sure someone will have it.

We recently offered ours for free on a local Facebook group. Had someone come to look at it the same day and it was gone a few days later. I think they paid around £60 for the removal fee.

soundsystem · 27/01/2022 13:38

Yep as others have said, put it in your local Facebook group! (Or if you're in or near London message me because I've been waiting for one to come up on one of our local groups Grin)

Local church? Church Hall? Nursery? Someone may be willing to transport it for free if it's going to a good cause.

Have you asked your house buyers / new tenants? We tried to buy the piano with our house but unfortunately the previous owners were definitely taking it with them. I would have happily saved them the hassle of moving it even an inch!

ShirleyPhallus · 27/01/2022 13:58

I’m looking to buy a piano, where abouts are you and what is it?

Pleasedontdothat · 27/01/2022 20:07

Thanks - I’ll look into some of these ideas.

@ShirleyPhallus I’ve messaged you

And don’t worry @starray I certainly wouldn’t throw it away

I think lots of people would like it - but it's the cost of removal, especially if they live in an upstairs flat. While there maybe space - removal companies charge a lot as it will need 2/3 men and the number of flights of stairs they have to manoeuvre. A friend had this issue and by the time they factored in all this plus tuning - it was an additional cost they couldn't afford for something that was free.

If I had one I'd paint it, take part of it apart and use it in the garden for flower
