Electric Guitar (left handed)

Hi,

My son has been playing the guitar for two years and loves it. He practises daily as he just enjoys playing. He is really keen to get an electric guitar as he likes more rock type music.
He has asked for an electric guitar for his birthday and we want to get something that will last and is good, but also doesn’t break the bank! Does anyone have any recommendations for a good first (left handed) electric guitar? Also what else will we need to buy to go with it? An amp and lead?

Thanks

My left-handed ds has been playing his electric guitar for a couple of years now.

When he started we asked his guitar teacher if he should learn on a left-handed guitar, but he advised to learn on a standard right-handed one.

He has been doing really well learning on a right-handed one.

We bought him a Squire Mustang which was reasonably priced and plays well 😊

He has been learning the classical guitar left handed for the past couple of years so I wonder if it would be hard for him to start again and learn right handed. I hadn’t considered that he should start off trying right handed.
Thanks, I’ll have a look at the Ibanez.

I'd stick with left-handed, why try and change now? That would be soul destroying and the reasons he's gone left are still there.

I'd look for reviews of right-handed beginner guitars and then see what's available in left-handed.

Sony do stereos with a guitar jack. Avoiding the need for kids to have amps and a stereo in their room.
But I'd take advice from his teacher and a decent guitar shop.

While left handed electrics aren't as common as right handed, all the major manufacturers like Ibanez , Yamaha, Epiphone, Squier and Jackson(both Fender brands) have models suitable for beginners. They frequently have beginners bundles , that include a practice amplifier too.

As for particular models , it's difficult to pick one over another (though I too like Ibanez's) as aesthetics can be just as important as sound when you start .... and having a guitar your son will actually want to play is key to him sticking with it.

If you look online at a big stockist like Andertons Music you can see there is a big range for lefties at all price points and they do entertaining You Tube videos explaining and comparing guitars too including for beginners.

Then when you've narrowed down the choices a bit take your son to a local music store to try them out to see what fits him best and which he likes.
