Piano for DS

My son is quite musical and has been inspired by some music he heard recently and wants to get a piano.

He is a competent keyboard player and I don’t mind buying the piano and paying for some lessons but obviously he may lose interest.

I’m a novice with this - are they expensive or is a second hand one a cheaper option?

I was in a similar situation recently and decided to buy a Yamaha Digital Piano second hand on EBay. Yamahas have a good re-sale value and they aren't as big and heavy as a traditional piano. Another plus is that you don't need to have them tuned. See if you find any decent ones from either the Yamaha Clavinova or the Arius range. If you go for a digital piano, make sure it has weighted keys, which will give you the impression that you are playing on a traditional piano.

Thank you Smile I have had a look and they seem to be selling for around £500, plus postage - is that about normal, would you say?

I just double checked. The Arius one I bought on EBay was £400 and I collected it from the seller, so there wasn't a delivery charge. It is about 6 years old but in very good condition. I remember there were also some decent ones on gumtree, when I was searching. Arius is cheaper than Clavinova, but I suppose it is just as good for beginners. The other (cheaper?) option may be to rent one? I am not sure about prices. I was keen to buy one, which I will sell again if DD looses interest.

Something like this or just this one would be good.

Have you considered renting a piano?

Agree with the above, a digital piano either second hand or new is the best idea. He will be able to use headphones if necessary, to avoid annoying the neighbours.
The own brand digital piano a poster above linked to is fine, I have the SDP-3 which is more than fine for a beginner (I'm not one, and it's still ok although ideally I will upgrade soon, largely to get the inbuilt pedals). If you have £5-600 there are loads of options, Yamaha, Casio, Roland, are good.
