Calling All Musicians - what is your dream piece?

NeleusTheStatue · 08/02/2019 14:09

Do you (or your DCs as in my case) have any dream piece dying to play/learn? It can be your next piece or a piece you are planning to learn in near future, or something big so more of a life time dream.

Having a rather dull day at a dull place (in rain) so just to cheer myself up... It's been very quiet since the breach issue so I may not get any response, but here you go!

Clair de lune, Debussy. I'm about grade 6 piano, so probably a bit advanced yet...

FlukeSkyeRunner · 08/02/2019 21:48

What's yours Op?

NeleusTheStatue · 09/02/2019 09:11

Hi FlukeSkyRunner, thanks for posting. Clair de Luna is really a nice piece. DS is currently playing Debussy's Children's Corner - a bit different from Clair de Luna but the same composer. Smile

He is dying to play Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata, especially the 3rd movement, on the piano, and Paganini Caprice 24 and Mendelssohn Concerto on the violin. They are all dramatic enough to catch young boy's attention. Grin

Unfortunately I don't play but love music and as a child I dreamt of playing Chopin's Nocturne in E Flat Major. Keep attempting to learn piano but need more willpower really.

What are you playing currently?

Eroica · 09/02/2019 09:16

DD is also doing children's corner!

I want her to learn Couperin's Mysterious Barricades or Warsaw Concerto by Adinsell!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 09/02/2019 09:24

I'm playing The Butterfly, from Grieg's lyric pieces (definitely worth finding on YouTube, it sounds so much like a butterfly, I love it), the prelude in D Maj from Bach's Well Tempered Clavier, and Lou Steins arrangement of Over the Rainbow.

NeleusTheStatue · 09/02/2019 09:40

Hi Eroica, which one is she doing? DS is doing Golliwogg's Catwalk. After playing Classical and Romantic pieces for a good long while, he's finding it's so refreshing and fun.

They are both great pieces, especially Warsaw Concerto would be on DS's 'wish list' if I let him listen to it. Grin

FlukeSkyRunner, yes I know Butterfly. It does sound like a butterfly and yes I love it very much.

My dream piece is Beethoven's Waldstein sonata, though I can safely say that it's never going to happen. Grin

I would love to be able to play Schubert's Fantasia in F minor for 4 hands with somebody. I think this is never going to happen too.

But I have been learning the Moonlight 3rd movement! It is most satisfying.

NeleusTheStatue · 15/02/2019 13:40

Beethoven's Waldstein sonata is really really gorgeous. DS would love that too, though it's probably too ambitious to achieve from his school term only, half an hour weekly lesson!

Have you learnt all the movements, or are you learning only the 3rd? I think the 3rd might be harder technically but the 1st movement is actually more challenging to pay very well for young musicians?

OP posts:
NeverEverAnythingEver · 15/02/2019 13:44

Hi Neleus - The third movement of the Moonlight is not impossible. Lots of arpeggios.

The Waldstein, on the other hand, requires one to have at least 3 hands...

NeleusTheStatue · 15/02/2019 13:49

Or 6 fingers..?

OP posts:
NeverEverAnythingEver · 15/02/2019 13:57

I don't think 6 fingers is enough. You want to play trill and melody with one hand ... It would be convenient if you have one more hand.

Nodrama999 · 15/02/2019 13:57

Moonlight Sonata for me but I also like Yirumas River flows into you. Doesn’t look to tricky but I’ve been stuck on grade 3 for ages due to lack of time and constant interruptions from the kids

Calling All Musicians - what is your dream piece?
NeverEverAnythingEver · 15/02/2019 14:04

Nodrama That's a lovely piece of music!

Arnoldillo · 15/02/2019 14:07

I did the Waldstein years ago in college. Badly, of course, but it was an achievement.

If I could play Vingt Regards I would die happy. It's impossible though.

Arnoldillo · 15/02/2019 14:12

Flukeskyrunner you could definitely do Clair de Lune at grade 6. It's largely pentatonic so falls under the fingers. Honestly, try it.

Tintini · 15/02/2019 15:32

I've just read a book by Alan Rusbridger about playing the Chopin G minor Ballade. That seems to be a bit of a tricky piece!

NeverEverAnythingEver · 15/02/2019 17:53

I read that book too. It made me join an amateur musician group.

NeleusTheStatue · 16/02/2019 08:38

Nodrama, I'm stuck on Pre-Grade 1, partly due to lack of time but hugely due to lack of willpower. I started practising a few days ago and managed to practise a bit each day. I'm afraid I have to put it on hold now as it's half term. But I am meaning to go back to 'a little bit everyday' after the holiday. Being grade 3 standard is like a dream to me. You can play so many beautiful pieces!

OP posts:
Nodrama999 · 16/02/2019 12:10

@NeleusTheStatue I can’t believe I managed grade one and grade two! I started lessons when my eldest was 3 weeks old. It was something I always wanted to do and it was 45 minutes out of time for myself, 2nd came along only 14 months later. I found it much easier when they were babies! Keep going, I love that we can play “basic” Christmas songs and songs they learn at nursery, it’s good sight reading practice too!

But thanks everyone, I have been inspired by this post, I’m now almost through page one of River Flows into You. Although, it’s lost it’s appeal since I found out it was in Twilight 🙈

NeleusTheStatue · 16/02/2019 14:14

Nodrama, that's even more amazing that you started having lessons AFTER baby No. 1. Yes, being able to play 'basic' pieces with family would be wonderful. DS is a violinist rather than a pianist. Being able to play the piano part for his violin piece would be a real treat for me. Well, it may be a bit too ambitious for someone who can't play any decent piece yet! I would be more than happy to be able to play some 'easy' pieces for fun with him (if DS is kind enough to play with me though).

NeleusTheStatue · 16/02/2019 14:18

Arnoldillo, I must ask you... Do you have three hands...?

OP posts:
NeleusTheStatue · 16/02/2019 15:07

Tintini, thanks for mentioning Alan Rusbridger. I didn't know about the book so had to check up. It sounds interesting and inspiring. I've ordered a copy for me.

Can play but have never had the opportunity to perform: Mozart, Symphonia Concertante for violin and viola. Solo or orchestral part, I don't mind, I just love the piece.

Total dream team: learn the cello and then learn the Elgar concerto. That's one for another lifetime!

DS has no musical aspirations, DD's are more next month than particularly ambitious as she has been listening to the next Suzuki book and can't wait to get to the Dvorak Humoresque.

NeleusTheStatue · 17/02/2019 14:02

cat, is it this one?

DS loves Perlman. If you think this is a good one, I'll listen to it with him.

And is the cello piece this one?

Absolutely gorgeous. Of course as it's Yo-Yo Ma. But there is something about the sound of cello. I think it's hard to find people who don't get charmed by that.

Love the Dvorak Humoresque. I remember DS did the Suzuki version. Smile
