How to choose a cello?

Hello, any one ever bought a cello? Do you know any specialist shops in the SE? We're near London. Any particular makes and models we should look at?

We're beginning to look for one for DD, will ask her teacher for their opinion, in a few weeks once lessons start up again.

Currently she's playing a rental from the local music shop. But they don't stock many makes / styles and even if we do "just" buy the rental model, I want to do as much as possible to buy the right model, that will last her a long time.

She's currently playing at grade 3 and 4, using a full size instrument.

Tim Craig in Sevenoaks? Is that too far?
But surely you need to get her teacher to help you? All instrumental teachers take a big interest in this. The Head of Music at your school can help but they will probably go straight to the teacher if they are not a string specialist. Budget is really important here - there is a huge price range. Defo ask her teacher, though! Good luck, very exciting for her.

I'm afraid I'm not a cellist so can't help you there but wanted to mention that if your child is studying at a state school you can buy a brand new instrument VAT free. Search 'assisted purchase scheme'.

Thank you for the messages. Unfornately DD has cello lessons outside of school, so I don't think the assisted purchase scheme is applicable, but I will check with school first.

Will google Tim Craig and see what the options are, thank you.

It should be fine - as long as it's a state school that she attends it doesn't matter where the lessons take place. Try approaching the schools bursar or finance officer, they have to be willing to pay for the instrument and be reimbursed.
