Finding folk

Having grown up on indie/rock/punk I think me and DH are chilling out and developing a taste for folky type music. I was given a cd of children's songs by a folk duo call Megson, which led me to buy a couple of their 'grown up' albums which we really love. Can anyone recommend anything similar to try next?

You could try Stick in the Wheel.
They combine very traditional folk with contemporary themes and they sing in their East London accents.

I think they have a punk ethos to their songs but I guess Folk was punk way before punk was Grin

That sound exactly the sort of thing I'm after thanks. I'd add we are also big Frank Turner fans but he's a bit sweary to listen to with young DC around.

Try Pete Atkin - plenty on YouTube, but CDs ONLY from Hillside Music: www.peteatkin.com/hillshop.htm

Not really folk but based on your previous love of punk and the fact that you like Frank Turner, check out:

Chuck Ragan
Tim Barry
Cory Branan
Dave Hause
William McCarthy
Brian Fallon

I am a bit sceptical about Stick in the Wheel, they're basically a bunch of middle aged electronic musicians who decided to pick up mandolins and sing in a mockney accent to hoover up some festival gigs. All that guff about them being the true voice of the street is just bollocks, there's nothing remotely 'authentic' about them (if that matters, which maybe it doesn't).

There are lots of really good acts around who have a much deeper connection with folk music. Off the top of my head you could try Alasdair Roberts, Fay Hield, Eliza Carthy, Nancy Kerr, Jim Moray, Chris Wood, Olivia Chaney, Sam Carter etc etc.

Their accents are not 'mockney'
I don't know where you get your info from.

I second Frank Turner and Brian Fallon. Frank Turner is probably more folk/punk combined. I particularly like smoke, the blues Mary and goodnight Irene (not the actual goodnight Irene) by Brian Fallon.

Listen to the folk show on radio 2 Weds nights i think - or listen bbc radio iplayer. It's an hour long show and plays a wide variety which would give you a taster

I love Blair Dunlop, definitely worth a listen.

I really like Ward Thomas , twin sisters with a folk feel to their albums. It is called Cartwheels (I think!)

TheSnorkMaidenReturns · 25/08/2017 23:40

Kate Rusby, Eliza Carthy, Leveret, The Unthanks, Nancy Kerr, Lau.

Folk Radio UK (FRUK) is where I get a lot of leads from. Would recommend their podcasts.
