From Bassoon to Oboe?........

Hi,
I used to play the bassoon, reached grade 6 back in the day. Havent played for a while now but would like to start something again.
I sold my last Bassoon but I can't afford another one now, even a second hand one straight off.
So I was wondering what the transition would be like from Bassoon to Oboe even after not playing for a few years.
I know oboes are expensive too but might be able to pick one up for a bit less than a Bassoon. I know that the oboe is also considered quite a difficult instrument to play.
My 2 year old and 4 month old keep me very busy and it will be a chore getting to lessons as hubby comes in late but I am sure I could arrange something once a week.

Any comments?

I used to play the bassoon, a long long time ago. Remember having a go on a boy from orchestra's oboe (Sooooo not a euphemism Grin) and could not get a peep out of it! Felt like me head was going to explode with the effort.

Might just have been me being crap though .

Natasha - Good point. :) I can read both but treble much slower than bass so that would take work.
Mrs kitty!! You do sound like one of the crew! I imagine the air has a lot less space to get through so more pressure iykwim?

I can amnage to make sounds on the clarinet, but I am not that keen on the the sound and there are too many of them for an oldie like me to be competing with.

Yes, I think that's probably exactly what makes it more difficult. It's a narrower reed as well, isn't it?

If the clef might cause a problem what about trying out a brass instrument (tuba?)for a change? No idea of costs involved though.

About a hundred years ago when I was at school, I started on the bassoon, then changed to oboe. I preferred the oboe although it can take a while to get a decent sound.

Allboxedin · 13/02/2012 20:34

Yes it is. hmm, brass I did sneak a peak at ebay for stuff. I think tubas would be costly, though I might be wrong.
I though bass clarinet too but they are expensive. :( I need to get rich

My daughter learns the oboe & there are different 'hardnesses' (can't think of suitable word) of reeds so you would probably start on a medium soft one to make a sound.

MrsKitty you probably tried a hard reed & a teenage boy wanting to look big & tough wouldn't tell you!!
