Why is learning guitar so hard?!!

I've been trying to learn guitar since the summer. My 9-yr old YS is very talented and picks things up v v quickly. He is developing very advanced skills with our very gifted teacher [himself a talented professional musician/songwriter] and I am very proud of him [YS that is].

However, my progress is frustratingly slow. I am still trying to get my fingers to do the right thing! This evening, I had a 20 minute session on my own and now my left hand fingertips are so sore they feel bruised [callusses developing nicely, thank you!] and I'm trying so hard, but it just isn't happening. And yet... I am determined not to give up [teech says not to, and I know it isn't just the ££ talking as he spends a couple of hours with me and 2 sons anyway - my lesson is down to half an hour, and they get half hour for ES and an hour for YS. He stays on sometimes to have dinner and is a business 'associate' too.]

I can't practise as much as I'd like as we've set up a retail business and it's been very full-on. I get to practise by locking myself upstairs if and when I get the chance - not that often!

Any one else found it hard, but persevered? I do still enjoy going upstairs and having a bit of a twang - just wish I could play more fluently / faster!!

Just finished listening to ds 7 strumming away quite happily preparing for his grade 1 exam later in the year, no calluses on HIS perfect fingers!

I played wind (Bassoon) and can manage to make sounds from other wind instruments but when I tried guitar, it was a complete disaster. I have one brother who is great with all things string, but can't play anything wind, my other brother brass and the opposite.
Why don't you try something else if you are not making any progress at all?
My dad tried to learn the piano for years and years (like 20 years or so!) and is still on the first part of his beginners book :)
I don't think all instruments are suited to all people.

On the other hand....adults learn much slower than kids and it does take a lot of practise and patience.
