One which just captures a time and a place. Even the filler tracks are sublime.

Mine are very predictable

Radiohead-The Bends
Rem-Automatic for the people

There are lots of others vying for place, but I'd have to have a bit of a think.

Numerous Pink Floyd (masters of the concept album - no such thing as 'fillers') but of course of course Dark Side.
Early Muse (origin of symmetry, absolution)

Inertia · 12/06/2011 21:56

Pixies- Doolittle

methodsandmaterials · 12/06/2011 22:01

Automatic for the People; REM
From the Choirgirl Hotel; Tori Amos
August and Everything After; Counting Crows
Ten; Pearl Jam
The Queen is Dead; the Smiths

BertieBotts · 12/06/2011 22:05

Agree with:
REM Automatic for the People (hasn't this been voted best album ever or something?)
Muse Origins/Absolution - Absolution got me through my final major project at college.

Also

Sting - Mercury Falling - used to go on long walks as a teenager and listen to this and have deep thoughts (and smoke)
Joshua Radin - We Were Here - last summer's album - rediscovering myself after leaving an abusive relationship :)
The Killers - Hot Fuss - college (sixth form years) album. First boyfriend. First time I got drunk. Lots of riding around in cars of friends who had just learned to drive and feeling really free.

ChickensHaveNoEyebrows · 12/06/2011 22:06

Automatic for the people - REM
The Bends - Radiohead
Back to Black - Amy Winehouse
Together Alone -Crowded House
Gah, and the Portishead album with Glory Box on it, that I can't remember the name of.

senua · 12/06/2011 23:10

BB,I was reading today that Sgt Pepper was supposed to be the best album ever. Lots of v good tracks but doesn't hold me spellbound the way Floyd does.
Did you hear the BBC doing a people's Desert Island Discs? Although The Beatles were the top artistes, they were scuppered by their breadth of repertoire and no individual song actually made it into the overall top eight. Comfortably Numb was at number five, just behind BoRhap - the only other non-classical to make the cut.

BulletWithAName · 13/06/2011 14:55

One Day Remains- Alter Bridge. When I listen to this, I'm 16 again!

swanker · 13/06/2011 15:03

Yes chickens- Together Alone is a fantastic album!

I am not a U2 fan, but I would say the Joshua Tree is one of those perfect albums, every track fits together seamlessly.

Automatic for the People works like that too.

I think the Killers try to do this with all their albums, though I think Sams Town has the edge on Hot Fuss.

paddypoopants · 13/06/2011 15:05

Pontiac- Lyle Lovett
16 Lovers Lane- The Go- Betweens
Magic - Bruce Springsteen

TaudrieTattoo · 13/06/2011 20:17

Fleetfoxes first album (name escapes me)
Radiohead - The Bends
Josh T Pearson - Last of the Country Gentleman

HedleyLamarr · 22/07/2011 22:16

Blimey, lots of good shouts. I will add:-
The Streets-A grand don't come for free. Not a bad song on it and it flows well.
Johnny Cash-American IV The Man Comes Around.
Dead Kennedys-Frankenchrist.

Plus these I listen to when I'm miserable:-
Manic Street Preachers-The Holy Bible.
Radiohead-OK Computer.
Black-Wonderful Life.
The pure misery on these 3 cheers me up no end.
