Calling all drummers...

DS (nearly 9) is desperate for a drum kit for his birthday but I've only ever got as far as one term of accoustic guitar and don't have the first clue about drums so:-

Are there any particular makes to look for?
Where would you buy online?
Should we start with a junior kit?
Is it worth buying second hand to get a better make?
Any other tips?

We have a budget up too about £200

Thanks Smile

there will probably be others along with good advice but ex is a drummer so i know a little bit.

i'd go with a full size kit if he's 9 (unless he's very small for his age)

Definitely buy second hand, new kits lose value as soon as you buy them and you will get a much better kit for your money second hand.

Stick with makes like Pearl, Yamaha, DW, Premier, Slingerland, Mapex, Gretsch.

Ex's first kit was a Pearl Export, pretty decent entry level kit and did him ten years of pretty hefty abuse, being lugged in and out of a van for gigs.

You need to factor in the cost of cymbals and hard-ware too. Buying second hand you'll get the shell pack (drums) and hardware (stands) but not all drummers sell on cymbals. Likewise the snare drum, these tend to be a personal item. So check carefully when you buy that you are getting exactly what you need.

Either get round some music shops (they often sell second-hand either in the shop or cards on a 'for sale' board), get in touch with your local college if they do a music course or your local youth club as lots of them run music projects now. The other good option is Ebay - but do your research first. Ex has picked up some pretty good bargains but he knows his stuff.

meant to say, ask away with any more specific requests. I know a few drummers so can ask for better advice.

Do you really want accoustic????

I bought dd an electric kit but they were as much 2nd hand as new so bought a new one on a great deal interest free credit.

you can get muffle pads to put on an acoustic if the noise is going to be an issue.

zisforzebra · 18/12/2010 21:30

Thanks both. Smile

We did consider electric but he's fixed on accoustic. We'll get pads as much for my sanity as the noise! Grin

He's tall for his age so a full size kit sounds good. We've been looking on ebay but hadn't though of looking on the sale boards in music shops - duh! Blush

I'm really excited about it and can't wait to see his face! Grin

Dd has ended up with an accoustic kit as well but at her Dad's Grin.

Mind you I can even hear the thump of the bass pedal through 2 floors Hmm
