Out of touch with new music

Anyone else feel the same - being mum of two it is hard to keep track on whats out there - i love music and used to know everything (most of my school mum friends feel the same) - now i feel so out of touch. Whats the best way of staying in touch with the music scene - forget book clubs - what about music clubs? Any ideas gratefully received....

What sort of thing did you used to like? For example, about 10 years ago I loved Groove Armada, and so I now like the XX.

6 Music is good for keeping you up to date with new stuff.

sillymoo123 · 27/10/2010 15:49

Love mostly indie schminde stuff.....i do like the XX...were do you find out about this stuff these days though? I dont buy any of the mags anymore and 6 music great as you say - but most of the time i am out and about.....and on telly its fair to say it is mostly x factor - which is not ideal!

Radio. it's the only way. I have it on most of the day at home and in the car when I'm in it. I've discovered soooo much new amazing music in the last couple of years this way and I've been to lots of gigs this year. I mostly listen to XFM (which is London and Manchester only) or Absolute. I'd give 6 Music a try but I don't have a DAB radio.

30andMerkin · 29/10/2010 11:24

I think you can get XFM on DAB country wide, could be wrong though.

Agree Radio 6. ALso big fan of Zane Lowe on Radio 1, I tend to be a bit 'meh' about 40% of it, quite like 40% of it, LOVE 10 % and hate 10% of what he plays, but it does tend to be different to the same old main radio playlist stuff. You can also get it on listen again online.

Kerrang.

CerealOffender · 29/10/2010 11:32

it is a parents duty to be out of touch and listen to embarrassing music.

LyraSilvertongue · 29/10/2010 23:08

30andmerkin, what time/day is Zane Lowe's show? Didn't know you could get XFM on DAB but that's good. I love that station. Mainly indie but with a good helping of rock thrown in.

30andMerkin · 30/10/2010 18:42

Zane is Monday-Thursday at 7pm (music to cook by?), but you can certainly 'listen again' online, and you can download some bits a podcast on radio 1 website.

They also have full track listings, so if you liked seomthing but missed the name you can probably work it out with a bit of detective work!

UnquietDad · 30/10/2010 19:29

6Music or buy one of those compilations - not Now That's etc, but the alternative ones which used to be called things like "The Album", or "The Bands", and had stuff on like Kasabian and the Arctic Monkeys.

natto · 31/10/2010 21:31

Get yourself on Lastfm.com
You put in all your favourite artists and it plays you the type of stuff you might like, as well as old favourites.

UnquietDad · 31/10/2010 21:37

And gnoosic too. Put in the name of a band/artist and it will suggest others you may like. Hit-and-miss but it can work.

Ultimately, though, I think you can't beat personal recommendation.

natto · 31/10/2010 22:39

Yes I agree about personal recommendation. Also looking at youtube vids and amazon, they recommend and link to other similar artists.
If you like live acoustic music and have a bit of time check this site out, some amazing artists

Also well worth watching Jools Holland shows

Spotify

Yes, second Jools Holland

UnquietDad · 01/11/2010 09:59

If you don't mind the odd bit of interesting commercial-ish pop (Example, Paloma Faith, Little Boots, Frankmusik etc.) then Popjustice is great for that sort of thing. They're also into boybands and so on, but you can ignore all that...

gallicgirl · 07/11/2010 14:51

Spotify, LastFM, Word magazine.

For the most part I'm damn grateful that I'm out of touch with the rubbish that populates the charts!

If you like listening to the radio, then find the right radio show and listen on i-player if need be (assuming you want a bbc station). The shows late at night tend to be better for finding new music. There are a lot of online radio stations so maybe google for links connected to the type of music you like.

upahill · 09/11/2010 08:50

Youtube and myspace are good as well.

Internet radio is great as well. XFM and the like are avaliable through the 'net.
