How to request a separate bedroom for a child on high rate DLA

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone can advise how I request my child in receipt of high rate DLA needs there own bedroom. I have two children in a three bedroom house. What would I need to do, what would they need. Previously I have been unaffected by bedroom tax as my adult child also lived with me. However now given my children's ages they would be expected to share until ten.
If anyone would mind sharing there experience I would be grateful. Honestly with a child with high sense needs I do not have the brain fuel to understand the universal credit situation. Thank you

Do you mean you want to claim for the third bedroom in your UC claim or you are trying to move house?

Do you receive middle/higher rate of the care component of DLA for your child? If so you should be exempt on this basis: https://www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/benefits/universal-credit/what-is-the-bedroom-tax

The bedroom tax won’t apply if you’re:

You need to message on your journal under payments to cover an additional bedroom under the disabled child condition.

Burningbud1981 · 16/05/2026 17:03

@PinkFrogss you need to request it UC won’t apply it automatically

somanychristmaslights · 16/05/2026 17:05

I feel I’m being stupid. You have 2 kids and 3 bedrooms??

Burningbud1981 · 16/05/2026 17:09

@somanychristmaslights
1 room for op
1 room for 1 child
1 room for the other child

however she has 2 children who are expected to share a bedroom. So she’s being deducted bedroom tax for the 3rd bedroom or receives the LHA 2 bedroom rate.

Well that seems silly, I’m assuming they hope people don’t realise and don’t apply. Easy to prove the exemption though I guess.

@PinkFrogss Exactly. I think they approve it without evidence if high rate but any other rate you need evidence the child cannot share.

They will want evidence of why your child can't share (especially if they have been sharing up until the point that your adult child moved out). Do you have any letters saying that they need their own room?

They have always had own room I didn't have a room when my adult daughter was at home, because my child can't share. However I don't believe I was ever asked who was in which bedroom when I claimed universal credit. I do have a GP letter stating child can't share and formal diagnosis. Do you know if they ask me to load evidence? Or is there somewhere on it to just upload it? Thanks for responding
