Looking for shower seat

We are organising a move into a bungalow which will suit the family much more because of all our disabilities. DH had a bad fall about 18 months ago and has struggled to keep clean since then. He is doing strip washes and using wipes. The new place has a lovely walk in shower, but I think he will need some kind of seat as he gets very tired.

I have had a look around and there are loads of different kinds of seats, so I could really do with some advice. Some are fixed to the wall and fold up and down, which looks good. But would these bear his weight? Me and our adult DS would also need to use the shower, so a fixed chair could be problematic.

Also, when he had the fall, the doctor connected us to an organisation that fitted various aids, but I can’t remember who they were!

Any ideas would be really helpful for my planning! Thank you.

I've found a movable stool best for us as my family can move it out if they don't want it in there.
Could be useful to ask for an occupational therapist home assessment they will give you advice/ may provide aids and adaptions.

Talk to adult social care as they can help with an assessment and perhaps help installing.

My MIL has just had a foldable shower seat put in, it looks so smart. I think it takes quite a decent weight, but it is quite small.

Similar to this - 95kg

Agree about asking adult social care for an assessment.

They will send an OT around and there are government grants available for adaptions if you require them.

I have one with integral handles. Adjustable height. My dh is twice my weight & it easily takes him. The rest of the family just move it out the way. It's not too heavy but feels sturdy.
Similar to the attached.
I also have a grab rail on the wall to make manouvering easier

CoffeeBeansGalore · 09/02/2025 21:52

Helps if I attach pic 🙄.

Your GP can refer you to your local community occupational therapy (adult social care will take months to even assess) and they should be able to arrange this for you. This is certainly the case where I live.

I know areas operate differently but check it out with your GP first about community OT.

Wow! Thank you all so much for these helpful replies. I am feeling rather overwhelmed by all of the moving stuff today (DH is very depressed and is not engaging very much) so I will read through everything and answer you all later.

Mumsnetters are brilliant people!

Does the bungalow just have 1 bathroom?
I agree with having an OT assessment. There are likely lots of other things which would make your DH's life easier. Hand rails, different seating options, supports etc.

I quite like sitting down to shower, even though I don't need a chair. Easier to wash your feet and less chance of slipping.

In addition to the little stools, there are also shower chairs with handles and look more like a regular chair- but also fold up against the wall. It really depends on his abilities to what would suit best. This one can hold 190kg.

Thank you again, you have been so helpful. Yes, we will get an assessment as soon as we are able. I am really looking forward to the move and hope it will solve at least one of his issues!

Please dont buy a drop down shower stool that is fixed to the wall. They eventually rust and you will end up with holes in the tiles when it has to be removed. As it is fixed, you can't raise it if someone struggles and needs it raising.
The NRS shower stool are the ones we prescribe at work.
But call local council OT's and they will assess and will give one for free.

GurlWithACurl · 21/03/2025 09:01

Thank you @itsnotalwaysthateasy that is really helpful. I had been looking at that type of seat, so I’m really grateful for your advice!

We had a small shower room with a shower cubicle and a sink that we converted into a wet room for my elderly parents.
We added two stainless steel handrails at strategic points and replaced the existing shower with double headed one so that one was easier to use whilst seated & the other whilst standing.
I was going to put a fixed teak bench in on the narrow wall but opted for a teak bench seat instead which is totally movable and still looks fantastic 5 years later.

Hopefully I can post the link for you …

Thank you @Teasall for that helpful suggestion. Those seats look very attractive. I will definitely bear them in mind.

Depending on his upper body strength and ability to sit to stand but there are lots of others. MIL has this one (or something similar)
