What happens in old age?

Hello, my situation is that I am permanently disabled, I claim ESA and PIP higher rate and my husband is my official carer, claiming carers allowance.
I was self employed from 2005 to 2011 and paid my NI. Before that, I worked full time. I had a workplace pension for about a year and there is just a couple of quid in it. My husband never took out a private pension plan either.

I will hit retirement age of 68 in 22 years time and my husband in 29 years.

So my question is, what happens when I/we reach pension age? I've avoided looking into it out of fear. Will we even get a pension? What will we do?

Please be kind!

Your best bet is to speak with citizens advice. They'll offer you free advice for your circumstances and you'll come away with a much clearer picture of what your entitlements are. Hard and scary to do but you'll feel so much better when you have. Knowing the information won't change the facts & it will allow you to plan 💚

You get full NI credits while you’re on ESA, and the same for your husband while he is claiming carer’s allowance. So don’t be afraid to check your state pension forecast - it should be fine.

Both of you will have pension credits. Get a government gateway account and you should be able to see your forecast. Don’t worry x
