Adult ADHD assessment... what happens?

It took me a while to find the appropriate place to post this as I wasn't looking for special needs as I don't associate ADHD with special needs.

Anyhow.

I have had my NHS appointment through for assessment. It's not until June but was wondering what to expect. It's a 2 hour appointment.

Firstly, congratulations on getting an appointment through the NHS! I was diagnosed at 32 - about 4 years after I began to suspect I had ADHD. After waiting 2+ years for an appointment I went private. I assume the process is the same whether you're diagnosed privately or through the NHS.

My appointment lasted a couple of hours. I was asked to take in school reports (thankfully my mum had kept loads of these), my best friend since childhood was asked to fill out a form about me and my partner was asked to fill one out also. The psychiatrist then asked me lots of questions about my childhood, family mental health, education, jobs, relationships, general mental health. It was very emotional and exhausting looking back at all my struggles and I felt very sad thinking about how I learnt to mask my difficulties and the stresses that came with that. Having said that, it was such a relief to be diagnosed and the medication I was put on has changed my life.
I hope your appointment goes well Smile

You'll have or be sent a series of questionnaires to fill in, you'll be expected to bring in stuff like old school reports and, perhaps a surviving parent - someone who knew you as a child.

You'll be interviewed and have more forms to fill in (varied forms and for consistency of answers) and if the assessor thinks there's an issue, a second appointment will be made.
