ADHD can you get NHS meds with private diagnosis?

One of my dcs (adult) is going to ask for a GP referral for ADHD assessment. I am wondering if I paid for a private assessment to speed things up, can you then get any recommended drug treatment on the NHS, or once you've opted out of the NHS is it not possible to get back into the system? I think I could afford the assessment from savings, but not long term meds and follow up appointments.

Just bumping this as GP appointment is tomorrow. I think she'll ask to go on the NHS waiting list anyway, but will probably discuss with GP whether going private for assessment is worthwhile. So it would really help if anyone can say if they've been told yes or no to NHS prescriptions after a private assessment and if the consultant was willing to liaise with the GP, so she's got an idea of whether this even something she could ask for.

I could probably afford about £1000 max, but neither dd or I could afford ongoing private check ups and prescriptions long term. From my limited research I now understand she'd need a couple of follow up appointments to get the dosage right, rather than as I'd initially assumed just a drug recommendation to the GP to prescribe. So that might mean private prescriptions initially, but my main fear would be if meds helped her, but she couldn't then get prescriptions on the NHS or her diagnosis wasn't accepted, and we couldn't afford continued private prescriptions, then it might we worse than just a long wait for the NHS?

If anyone's had any experience either way it would really help to hear about it.

Hi OP, I've been through this with my son. Got diagnosis in February, and now that his meds are stable, he has been accepted back into the NHS & he is now dispensed his medication via the NHS.

Please DM if I can help

It cost me around £1200 for the initial diagnosis, then around £150 for each appointment thereafter, then £25 for the prescription, plus the cost of the medication, which is around £120 per month.

In total, I think it's probably been around £2k.

Thanks House that's helpful. It's good to know that rejoining the NHS can happen - I think dd will feel happier discussing NHS meds with the GP if she knows it's not completely unheard of.

If I'm right in assuming there will be a long waiting list for NHS assessment, I will have to rethink how much we can contribute. DD is nearly 20 and it's a difficult enough time of life anyway, so I think if I can find a way to pay & save her a couple more years of struggle, then it will be worth it. She's at uni, so I also think it would help her to get an assessment while she is a student & has access to their counselling services.

I had a single consultation with a private psychiatrist, she wrote to my GP, GP managed and prescribed meds from that point

Thanks Millie - dd is feeling more encouraged now about discussing this all with the GP.

My son had to go private for his ADHD diagnosis as had been waiting for help for 4 year GP would not help, he has now been diagnosed with ADHD a letter from his psychiatrist was sent to his GP and they refused to help, his prescription cost us £102 he doesn’t work because of his ADHD and wants to get his life back but can not afford the this cost so is not taken it what help can he get, and it’s heart breaking so see him so broken
