Private Dx for add/ADHD? Worth it?

I ve 2 sons with ADHD Dx & youngest has Aspergers too.

I really feel looking back over my personal & work life that I have ADD. I am wondering if it would be of benefit to go for assessment.
Would medication help?

Hi Bootygirl,

Sorry I directed you here hoping you would get better answers than in chat and no one has replied. Its much quieter in here however and someone still might come along.

Hopefully reading through some of the older threads has helped , esp if you look back at some of the long running threads like this one, (although not specific to add)

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/mumsnetters_with_sn/2399562-Neurodiversity-support-thread-Women-with-suspected-self-diagnosed-diagnosed-ASC-ADHD

I dont have ADD/ADHD but I was diagnosed with ASD (autism spectrum disorder) as an adult so cannot answer personally regarding specific ADD diagnois & medication etc

However, I can tell you that being diagnosed as an adult with ASD allowed me to let go a huge amount of guilt and confusion about the way things had worked out in my life.

It allowed me to see that there was a reason for me behaving in certain ways.

Having a diagnosis also allowed me "manage" things better, ie if I knew I was going to be tired out by social interaction, I would try allow time to "recover" etc.
I would say that it did not magically fix everything, not everyone takes it seriously, people close to me do not believe the diagnosis & this can be upsetting.
It can also actually take some time to come to terms with as it is a life changing diagnosis.
On the whole however, i do not regret it.

stray. I understand what you say about asd one of my DS is on the spectrum (Aspergers) we have been through the denial by family too.
If I do get Dx I doubt I will actually tell anyone bar my DS & DH.

I have to get a referral by GP! To phychiatrist only one in Ireland that deals with adult Dx. The wait is 12 weeks at the moment and a three hour drive away.

I think it would be a relief to know but I am also very apprehensive about it. Even though we ve been here with both sons!
