Neurodivergent parents support thread

Following on from some discussion in the neurodiversity support thread, this thread is for ND parents to discuss anything related to parenting.

Being a parent is challenging for anyone, but those of us who are ND have a whole other range of difficulties when it comes to raising our children. Whether your children are NT or ND, whether you need advice or just want to vent or share an experience, just dive in Smile

My DD got loaned this book by a friend and found it helpful.

There may be better books but she found it helpful.

Hi Bertie
It's quiet here but good too. It's to try not to fill up the ND support thread with loads of parenting dilemmas although they creep in there too.

DD has ADHD assessment next week. She has sensory issues too. Maybe she has asd and ADHD?

I'm worried psych will say it's just her/our behaviour or that she'll say she should be on Ritalin (a bit all or nothing me).

I worried i will have made things worse. Not entirely rational I know. We filled in some Connors 4 questionnaires and I couldn't sleep.

GCSEs have been agonising. We have been through them before with DC with dyslexia and DC with dyslexia/ASD. This time it has been much worse. The attention all issues have made it much harder.

I feel like people are going to think I am a munchausens by proxy mum of neurodiversity. I know I shouldn't care Sad

I will ask on other thread about experiences of ADHD meds. It will be good to hear so I can get over myself.

Sensory processing disorder is categorised separately from ASD I believe but they often go together. DD had to do a sensory processing questionnaire and we have an appointment with the OT at the end of the month to go through it. We also have an appt with behavioural psychologist and a follow up SALT appt. I've no idea what happens after that. I think it's an appt with someone who can put all the reports together and give us an answer.

Hey Bertie.

Weaver, thank you. That's helpful. I get really confused with the he overlapping nature of problems. Of course you also just see your child and it's hard to know what's what.

I hope your DD's assessments go well and someone is able to pull it all together in a useful way.

Hi, this is about DS1 rather than me, but does anyone have experience of night terrors, weighted blankets etc? I've started a thread in SN children but not had any responses. Thanks!
