I have some germ issues but need to get over them to help my ASD DC potty train, he's non verbal but kind of indicates for poo now. Has anyone managed to over come this kind of thing and how did you do it?

Have you got a RADAR key?
It won't solve the germ problems but it's much easier if you have a child that needs changing.

I think the not pooing outside of the home thing is really common and not just common in neurodiverse circles.

I also find using the same toilet cubicle feels "safe" in whichever toilets. I also do the don't think about it mantra! Grin And the going to the best ones.

I do find it easier to deal with things for ds2's needs though, so the intense distress he would go through if he had an accident is worse than most toilets in our usual places. Not that it's actually come up as he can hold his wee a lot & is currently pooping in a nappy at his request.

The ones in our city centre are brilliant. they are all high tech and it's like being in the future.... you don't have to touch the tapes or the dryers directly, even has the changing places table.

My ds also still uses a nappy. But we have trained him to sit on the toilet. That means that even when we are out of the house he won't go unless he is on a toilet.

Do you know why you are having trouble?
Finding out why you don't like something makes it easier to overcome the issues, is it a germ thing or more a not liking the idea of others hearing you going?

This is pretty good advice, but what happens if the issue is just general anxiety about everything public toilet related, i'm not sure there is a cause in this case.

Theaprilfool · 31/01/2017 14:34

The fear stems from somewhere surely?

JustAnotherSilentOldNumber · 31/01/2017 15:30

I think that's true a lot of the time but sometimes but it does apply all the time.
