We'd like to find out more about your children’s experiences of learning to drive and your role in the process.

This survey is open to all UK MNers with at least 1 child aged 17-24 who has recently obtained a driving licence, is currently going through driving lessons, or is considering learning to drive in the next year.

To start the survey, please click here.

All who complete the survey will be entered into a prize draw for a £100 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Done!

Given that the survey covers children aged up to 24, I was amused by how much it seemed to think that parents "should" be involved Hmm let alone how much the said child would even let them be involved Wink Or maybe I've just brought up deliberately an independent child Grin

I was also amused by the "hypothetically, if there was a temporary insurance policy to cover your child practicing in your car.....would you consider it?"

Ummmm, I don't need to think "hypothetically" Confused - that's what we already use Confused In fact, my car insurance broker told me not to put ds onto our insurance, even as a learner, and to go away and buy separate temporary insurance.

I agree! I thought it was OTT about involvement for a seventeen year old, never mind twenty four.

Tracking their driving lesson progress 😮. Just weird!

I found this odd too. I have a 23 year old, living at home. She passed her test in February.
She organised and paid for everything herself as she had a grown up job.
We did buy her a few lessons, and have her some money towards buying a car when she passed, but that's just about all our input into the process.

Ds was 18 when he started learning the summer between 1st and 2nd year at Uni and then had to change instructor when he went back to Uni. I helped find his first instructor but then it was up to him, including telling me when he was ready to come and practice with me first trip was aborted Wink but once he was back in Aberdeen he had to find a new instructor for himself (I did advise him to ask his rugby club pals).

I wouldn't dream of keeping tabs on his progress! Shock

Mumblechum0 · 22/10/2020 19:36

My DS was married at 24, after leaving home for uni at 28; don't think he'd have taken kindly to any interference from mummykins 😁

Mumblechum0 · 22/10/2020 19:37

Leaving home at 18 🙄

Xenia · 23/10/2020 10:41

It didn't ask much at all - may be because my youngest 2 passed at 17 and they are now 22 so it was a bit disappointing.

Justanothernametoday · 23/10/2020 13:15

Done but agree with previous posters, at 17 my DS has largely organised it all himself.

I did select "very easy" when asked how easy I had found it to track his progress because it has been - I just asked him!

Oh, hadn't read any of the comments before doing the survey, but @prettybird has it spot on.

What weird questions. You have to be 17 to learn to drive. Most of the Qs seemed to be suggesting our dc were about 10 Hmm

JamieLeeCurtains · 24/10/2020 01:03

I gave up on it. It was a weird survey.

I've just done the survey and agree with BackforGood - seems to be aimed at none independent young adults! My son paid for and organised his lessons himself. I couldn't take him for extra driving as I hold an automatic licence and therefore can't supervise a learner. My Mum took him for extra practice though.

I passed my test 5 years ago, so have recent experience of learning to drive and passing the tests and my Mum is an advanced driver.

I also expect that if someone is mature enough to learn to drive and everything that that entails, I expect them to be able to organise their own lessons and speak up if they need extra help!

Proudboomer · 24/10/2020 17:45

Just done it but I took no active part in the process bar funding some lessons for a birthday gift.
Do parents really have the level of input that this survey indicates?

101namesforme · 25/10/2020 05:32

Oddly I ticked to answer about my 19 year old that has his license more than two years. It didn’t ask me any questions at all about him 🤷‍♀️ Just asked my name and said thank you??

Is two years and a few months not recent enough???

Takeitonthechin · 26/10/2020 20:13

Done

Ragwort · 29/10/2020 20:54

Agree with 101 ....., also have a 19 year old with over 2 years experience and there weren't any additional questions Confused

musicposy · 29/10/2020 22:34

Me too! Err - it exists and we’ve used it....

Tracking their driving lesson progress 😮. Just weird!
Ooh I’ve done this!
It goes like this -
“Oh, you’re back. How was the lesson?”
“Crap. I stalled on a roundabout and people beeped at me.”
“Arses. Do you want a cup of tea?”

Does that count?

SkiingIsHeaven · 30/10/2020 11:03

I did this but there is no record that I have. Should I have received an email.

Mumisnotmyonlyname · 30/10/2020 23:32

We have found that driving instructors vary, from our children and friends' children. There are some really dodgy ones, from a woman's perspective.
