We are working with an education provider who would like to find out what you think about your child(ren) taking GSCEs and A Levels outside of school - often referred to as “homeschooling” or "home education".

This survey is open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 12 or older.

Click here to start the survey.

All MNers who complete it will be entered into the prize draw where one winner will win a £300 voucher and a second winner will win a £200 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks

Couldn’t get past the second question I’m afraid! We’re not studying for GSCE’s at almost 13...

I HE to age 13 when DD decided to go to school as it was 'easier' to do the stuff needed for exams

I'm interested to hear someone say it's a great survey. I was asked about 3 very brief questions and hardly had the opportunity to express any opinions about anything before I was bounced out to the demographic questions. Presumably the answers I did give weren't good enough. Confused

We home educated DS for most of year 9 but this was more than 5 years ago. I’m guessing the time lag means I was screened out of the main survey questions.

What I wanted to say is that I would have been interested in taking exams outside school. We home educated due to bullying that his school were ignoring, not a philosophical objection to formal education.

This meant we followed a curriculum intended to mirror core GCSE subjects and had intended to work towards IGCSEs though perhaps over a longer, staggered timescale as we realised it was unlikely that we would have been able to do 9 or 10 subjects in a year.

In the end DS returned to (a different) school and completed his GCSEs there. For families like us though, who find themselves home educating, when they perhaps hadn’t ever intended to; knowing that it is still possible to pursue a goal of passing exams and going on to university, access to GCSE and a curriculum that builds towards it would be invaluable.

I referred to it as H.education in one of my answers.
We might consider it for 6th form as mine only needs 2 for college. Seeing how GCSE's go, not holding my breath for many passes Sad

For mine just being able to concentrate on the two and not having to do lots of other useless things would be a huge benefit.

I got all the way to question 2 then couldn't answer as there's no "none of the above" option. I home educated my son from age 12 and he went to college at 15 without doing GCSEs.
I take it the provider in this case is only interested in GCSE and A levels and not actually in other HE options.

EvenPhilip · 29/09/2019 08:57

That's what it says on the OP.

“This survey is open to all UK MNers with at least one child aged 12 or older.“

No it isn’t.
The surveying postecan’t even use the appropriate terminology for the market they are seeking information from.

Snugglepumpkin · 29/09/2019 23:58

Please pass onto the 'education provider' that just because a child is not e.g. 12, does not mean they are not studying material an 'education provider' would design for a 12 year old.
Some 10 year olds would be capable of taking courses tailored to the average 12 year old, whilst others would not be ready to take it at 16 so trying to fit all EHE children into a box like that is not going to work.
Some are EHE because they are gifted, others because they have SEN which mean they will never achieve an exam in any subject & the rest are everything in between.
If they are interested in catering to an EHE market, they have to begin by not trying to force EHE learning to conform to the traditional school provided learning via a NC curriculum delivered to the expected age range.

Horses are schooled.
Children are educated.

In this country we refer to it as Elective Home Education.
EHE is NOT school at home.

Yes, the survey is poorly conceived and indicates little understanding of how home education works! I too couldn't get past Question 2.
