We have been asked to find out your views on all things family holidays!
This shortish survey is open to all UK MNers with at least one child at home who have had at least one family holiday (in UK or abroad).

Add your details at the end and you will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will get a £300 voucher for the store of choice (from a list) AND one MNer will get a £250 Expedia voucher to spend across their range (T&Cs will apply) Smile

thanks and good luck, MNHQ

That seemed to be totally aimed at people who pick a random hotel in the sun for their holiday. We mostly go to visit friends or family, or go to explore a city or area we think sounds interesting. Most of those destinations at the end sound great! But I don't think I'd be choosing between Mongolia, Ethiopia and Columbia based on the availability of a kids club.

lljkk · 26/12/2016 23:55

If I went to Ethiopia or Colombia, I'd want to walk in mountains all day (with the DC). I doubt that's the kind of holiday they're surveying for :).

Done. I wouldn't mind going to Mongolia when dd gets older. I'm sure it'll be great lesson in geography for her. Imagining going there with a luxurious train, not sure if such a train exists at the moment or not, something like Trans-Siberian railways. I always wanted to go the Far East by train via that route. Other destinations on the survey were not that desirable for me.

Done. Was a weird set of questions though! We choose our holidays based on location of overseas friends and family so we usually have lots of extra pairs of hands but maybe when DC are older they would enjoy a couple of hrs in a kids club.

shewhomustbeEbayed · 29/12/2016 18:23

There wasn't a category for wanting to spend time as a family on holiday, just with partner or with children.

gamerwidow · 29/12/2016 19:14

I never wanted to put DD in a kids club when went on holiday because I thought holidays were about family time. However once we arrived she begged and pleaded to be allowed to join the other children so in the end I buckled and let her go to few sessions. I spent the whole time hiding out of sight making sure she was ok so not very relaxing for me! However despite my reservations she had such a great time I'd always look for a kids club when booking a holiday again! They're not just for neglectful parents the kids do enjoy them too Grin

CinnamonSteve · 30/12/2016 02:42

Kids loved the clubs when they were younger, although we found huge difference in quality between travel operator and hotel-run clubs.

Wouldn't go to the Middle East or Colombia with kids under 18, especially not my daughter. Mongolia could be very fun! Don't see Ethiopia as a holiday destination really.

nut3lla · 30/12/2016 12:26

We love family holidays & the kids club is something we look for & would prefer a hotel if it had this. We usually choose a family hotel suitable for children with one of the big chains as we know they will be good. Our 2 young children love the social element of the kids clubs and we love an hour or two of freedom to just be a couple, time we rarely get at home. We spend the rest of the time as a family together having lots of fun & laughs. Planning our next break in the sun but haven't ever thought of those unusual destinations!

exexpat · 31/12/2016 12:15

Mine are way too old for kids clubs (teenage), but I did occasionally use them when they were younger. This survey seemed very much geared to resort-type holidays, and we have rarely done those as a main holiday even when the children were much younger - lots more villa/holiday home type holidays when they were very little, and travelling round cities and other places since they were 5+.

thatcoldfeeling · 01/01/2017 16:11

Done - yes also thought it seemed to assume everyone holidays abroad. I don't for a number of reasons.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 03/01/2017 11:13

Poorly structured survey

Doesn't differentiate between different types of holiday and childcare. We use childcare on skiing holidays but camp in the summer so my answers look pretty misleading to our reality.

parrots · 03/01/2017 18:39

I think the questions at the end were probably a red herring (ie merely there to establish how risk averse a survey participant is)

Raines100 · 03/01/2017 22:11

Mine have never been to kids clubs and I would never 'put' my children into one for childcare purposes. If one of them asked to go for an hour or two on a couple of the days, perhaps because they were running an activity they liked, I might say yes.

Are they safe, though? If you're abroad, are the people running the club likely to be DBS checked?

Lilylonglegs · 03/01/2017 23:41

Colombia is amazing and very child friendly (Cartagena) at least. I'd love to visit with my daughter. Ethiopia and Oman just no.

Kids Clubs I've only used once and I loved it. Was a great holiday as I got some relaxing me time and the LO got to make friends and play.

mytinselsinatangle · 04/01/2017 22:56

Very strange list of destinations, not your usual type of countries where I would expect to necessarily find kids clubs!

Soubriquet · 05/01/2017 09:48

Done. We have only had one holiday and that was to Butlins so no kids club Grin

But when I went on holiday with my parents we always went into the kids club

Me and my sister actively hunted for them and actually enjoyed going

FeralBeryl · 05/01/2017 19:52

Love the random destinations too Grin
Oh and I'll. be ostracised because kids club is one of my first considerations when booking.
They only go to one of the slots each day (usually to keep them out of midday sun etc) if any of them don't fancy it, they don't go but this has never happened, they absolutely love it, also the evening shitty songs entertainment which is run by kids club.

HammeringBird · 06/01/2017 12:03

I would never plan a holiday around being able to put my kids into a club because I see our family holiday as an opportunity for us all to do fun things together and spend time together. Dc are 8 and 5 and we have only ever taken them to a family-owned property (e.g. use grandparents' house when they're on holiday, so no kids club obviously), stay with friends or go camping (UK and abroad). If there were activities on a campsite/other accommation that my kids WANTED to do without us then they would be allowed (of course!), but this hasn't happened so far. Perhaps because we enjoy doing things together that our kids also find exciting/interesting. Or because the kind of campsites we go to run their activities in the local language so our DC would struggle to join in. There isn't really enough space in the survey to go into detail about what would or wouldn't make someone interested in signing their kids up for a club. I look forward to taking our DC to more 'exotic' destinations when they're older and I think they will both appreciate it more and benefit from it more. Somewhere like Mongolia would be amazing to visit, but they need to be old enough to be able to enjoy the kind of holiday there that their parents would also enjoy! Maybe when they're 14 & 17 plus.

HeadElf · 10/01/2017 19:57

Done! My twins are only 9mo but have been on 2 holidays with us, one to New York (nightmare) and one to Centre Parcs no anal sex. My DP suggested the crèche at centre parcs but I felt too guilty, it was their first holiday too and I didn't want to leave them and miss out on memories.
