We have been asked by the charity, Scope, to find MNers who have a disabled child to complete their survey.

They say "this survey is open to anyone in the UK who has any disabled children under the age of 18 with any longstanding physical, developmental or mental impairment, illness or condition. By ‘longstanding’ we mean anything that has affected your child or children over a period of at least 12 months or that is likely to affect them over a period of at least 12 months. If you have more than one disabled child, please answer thinking about your oldest disabled child who is under the age of 18.

We want to hear about your experiences of accessing mainstream activities, groups and services for your disabled child.

The Government’s Children and Families Bill is currently passing through Parliament, providing a good opportunity to address the issues affecting many families.

But we need your help! Please fill in our Parents’ Experiences survey to help us raise awareness of the issues faced by disabled children and the parents of disabled children. The survey will only take around five minutes to complete".

Everyone who takes part will be entered into the prize draw, where one lucky winner will receive £100 in shopping vouchers. These can be spent in all major high street shops, as well as supermarkets, restaurants and even travel agents.

I've just gone through the survey but don't really want to give out my name and address to a third party. Is there any way of changing it so that we can just put our MN name as we do for other surveys, and have MNHQ contact us if we win the vouchers?

They've been around a long time, zzzzz. They were compelled to change their name back in the early 90s, I think it was, as they were previously called The Spastics Society.

Glad to be asked about accessibility issues as its something we find quite difficult to deal with having a child with a mild disability.

Sorry - I didn't mean to come across as having a dig at you, zzzzz. I was familiar with them because there use to be one of their collecting boxes (little girl with the old fashioned leg callipers) in our local shop, when I was little and I lived near one of their charity shops at the time they did the re-brand.

I'll have to look at the survey properly when I'm less tired. It's hard to answer surveys about accessibility when, for a lot of things, we simply don't bother if it's unworkable.

Done, we have had very mixed experiences with clubs so welcome any attempts to make them work better for our children!!

It can be done but sadly inclusive extra curricular activities seem thin on the ground!

All a bit irrelevant if you can't access the services to comment due to the length to time your child spends on transport getting to and from school ruling out any chances of an after school club that starts any time before 6pm.

As far as clubs at weekends go, I find the ones independently funded (i.e. no LA funding) the most inclusive, with high expectations as well as high levels of tolerance. Usually, but not exclusively, religious groups.

IMHO Scope could and should have been doing a lot more for years to get out there and get businesses and organisations to comply with government guidelines regarding accessibility. Why most businesses feel as if they don't have to get a portable ramp for wheelchair users I do not know.

Done it. Bit depressed now though. There's not much out there for the stage we're at with DS2 at the moment.

Done. Our experiences generally fit between the responses asked for, but this survey did make me realise how much we have found the easiest path for us, and just how much we actually avoid trying to do.

Thanks for flagging this issue. We've checked it with Scope and they say 'We have included the other fields for those that wish to participate in the prize draw, as we will need to send them the voucher if they win. None of these fields are compulsory but they do enable us to contact the user swiftly when they win the draw. Details will not be used for other purposes (unless permission has been given) and people can by-pass this option altogether if they would prefer not to participate in the draw and remain completely anonymous.'

I've completed the survey.

I've also been in contact with Scope regarding my experiences, following a campaign they'd run in their shops. Can I just say they were very respectful of my personal details, only contacting me because I was willing to tell my story, and unlike other charities, they haven't phoned me up because I am on their database, to get me to make regular giving. And it was very therapeutic to tell my story to someone who would listen! I hope the government listen!

Survey completed. It didn't really seem to be aimed at non physical disabilities though?

Done - and yes, it's highlighted to me how little my DS's do/will be able to do outside of school compared with my NT children. And yes, just being given a wad of paperwork on charities, benefits and information when your child is diagnosed isn't v helpful - DS3 was diagnosed last year in the late summer, and I still haven't gone through his load - so much so that when DS4 was diagnosed before Xmas, I had to admit I hadn't gone through much of it yet to the same Doctor!
