Mumsnetters and their children needed to test NutraSea omega-3 fish oil

GeraldineMumsnet · 03/03/2010 13:34

We've been asked by NutraSea to find 50 Mumsnetters who are willing for their child to try a new omega-3 liquid fish oil called NutraSea Kids.

To take part in the trial your children need to be aged between 2-16 and either an existing user of omega-3 liquid fish oils or to have tried them in the past and not liked the taste.

If you're selected to take part, NutraSea will send you a bottle each of NutraSea+D and NutraSea Kids and we will email you a link to a thread on Mumsnet for your feedback.

The trial will last three months and you will need to add feedback three times: after two weeks, after one month and then after the oil is finished at the end of the three months.

Your two-week feedback should mainly concentrate on your reaction to the taste of the pure oil compared to your existing omega-3 liquid fish oil supplement or the ones you have tried in the past.

Your feedback after one month and at the end of the three months should concentrate on the health benefits you have noticed (if any) or the difference (if any) the product has made to your/your child's health.

Everyone who adds three lots of feedback will be sent a £10 Holland and Barrett gift voucher and entered into a prize draw to win a £100 ASOS gift voucher.

At the recommended dose, NutraSea and NutraSea+D are safe to consume during pregnancy and while breastfeeding, but if you're pregnant or taking any medication please consult your doctor before taking the supplements.

If you'd like to take part, please click here.

Thanks,

MNHQ

Have just received 3 bottles.
Thankyou Mumsnet.
My kids will be so pleased.

Rhubarb · 12/03/2010 13:26

So where's the link for the feedback. Kids don't mind theirs (I gave a little taste to ds too) and would be happy to take it every day.

Mine, well I know how difficult it must be to mask the fishy taste, but I could still taste it through the apple. I would suggest they try a stronger tasting fruit like blackberries to mask the fishness even more. It is better than the standard cod liver oil I currently take, but I still need a drink afterwards just to take the taste away.

Whippet · 12/03/2010 13:37

I'm hoping mine might help with my PMT - doesn't it have lots of EPO in it too?

Oh - that's another thing - the writing on the bottle was soooooo tiny I couldn't read it, and I was too lazy to get my glasses were upstairs...

BornToFolk · 12/03/2010 18:23

I mixed mine with smoothie this morning. It was not a good idea - just ruined a nice glass of smoothie! Think I'll just take it quickly and follow up with a drink tomorrow.

DS looking less impressed today too. I tried a bit of his and it is better (more strongly fruit flavoured) but it's still oily.

cocolepew · 12/03/2010 18:28

I got mine today, how I'll never know.

It was addressed to me, then another name, then my address, then; Northern Ireland, Spain

Haven't tried it yet.

uberalice · 12/03/2010 19:00

Yes, I thought of Bad Science too.

Bleatblurt · 12/03/2010 20:04

Mine was addressed like that too, cocolepew. Person with initials EE and Spain underneath Scotland!

Goober · 12/03/2010 20:14

Mine said my name, then Elaine something or other, and my address.

cocolepew · 13/03/2010 09:35

Oohh I wonder who Elaine E from Spain is?

Rhubarb · 13/03/2010 15:15

Mine too!

We have been trying very berry for a few days. There is very little flavour to it - but that also means there is not much fish flavour. One teen said it tastes like flavoured water and although it's oilier than that suggests it is a considerable improvement over other fish oil supplements we've tried.

So personally I would recommend this for fussy children. In fact I sought out this thread expecting to find other people more enthusiastic. Not looking forward to the apple one now. We seem to be the only ones who have tried very berry?

The bottle gives dose instructions for children aged 2-13 but despite a mention of pregnancy doesn't give any adult doses. The manufacturers should consider an "adult" dose recommendation too. Firstly you need a teenage dose, secondly many elderly people take fish oil for joint problems, they don't always like capsules but opt for a childrens product as the flavour is less strong.

BornToFolk · 16/03/2010 11:09

tatt, the very berry one is for kids, the apple one is the adult version. If you've only had the very berry one, perhaps you've only been selected for the children's trial?

Anyway, DS is now flat out refusing to take his one. I mixed it into his porridge this morning and he ate it without complaint. Seems a bit daft when he was taking the Boots one with no problems but I've got three bottles of the stuff to get through so he's having it one way or another!

I'm getting better with mine. I take it in front of DS so I can't allow myself to make a fuss, and if I follow it with a glug of tea it goes down OK.

JollyPirate · 16/03/2010 11:13

DS had one mouthfuo and won't take anymore. I tried it and it's horrible but I do have to say that you don't get the fishy belch later in the day - more a berry belch.

But...... have devoured Bad Science and am now about the whole fish oil hype.

tatt · 16/03/2010 12:12

well I was honest about the ages of my children - who are teens - and was sent both child and adult versions. As we're all over 13 we're all planning to try both. I'll start the apple one myself tomorrow.

I haven't read bad science but there is research around showing that omega 3 fatty acids are important for a lot of things, including brain development. Whether supplements can help is more debatable but if you have children who won't touch fish and can't have nuts you need some way to get fatty acids into them.

Clearly this isn't a controlled trial, children change with age anyway and some of the children will have been on other fish oil supplements. Detecting changes that can be due to the oil is therefore unlikley. However if you want to give your children fish oil then the very berry is one they might be persuaded to swallow without bribery.

notwavingjustironing · 16/03/2010 12:19

Mine was addressed to Elaine from Spain too! I tried it with my DS2 first, but he hated it, then pretended that we hadn't opened it and gave it to DS1.

We've got the Very Berry one too.

They much prefer the 89p citrus flavour chewy capsules from Aldi!

Rhubarb · 16/03/2010 13:09

I haven't tried the berry ones, not too keen on the apple ones.

The kids also say it tastes like flavoured water. ds has no problems in taking it but dd isn't too keen, so I think ds will be the guinea pig in this experiment.

BornToFolk · 16/03/2010 13:36

Sorry tatt, didn't mean to imply that you hadn't been honest! I thought you hadn't had the apple one at all.

Curiousmama · 16/03/2010 13:42

notwaving are those chewy ones omega 3? Ds2 is on this trial and doesn't like it at all. I'm persevering with him but it isn't easy. He takes a big glug of apple juice after it.

notwavingjustironing · 16/03/2010 14:17

Sorry Curiousmama - went out!

Yes, they are in a yellow tub - they are just as nice as the expensive Haliborange ones that the boys were having before.

CarGirl · 17/03/2010 18:56

They make me wretch and it's getting stronger every day. I feel sorry for dd having to have hers too. Not sure if we'll make the whole 3 months!

whimsy · 17/03/2010 19:01

Well ds2 has had it for 3 days, although I am mixing into frubes to get him to take it

muggglewump · 17/03/2010 19:06

DD said it tastes OK. I've not tasted it myself, I should really.

HellBent · 17/03/2010 19:08

Should I try this for DS? He likes some of the chewy vitamins but turns his nose up at anything with fish in it, now he can read I can't lie to him! Is it supposed to taste better?

CarGirl · 17/03/2010 19:12

It tastes okay it's the oily texture, it's hideous.
