This is the feedback thread for the Mumsnetters with children aged 2 - 6 who have been testing Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms in Orange & Rainbow Carrot and Blackberry & Beetroot flavours.

Here’s what Soreen has to say: “With Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms it’s never been easier to squidge more fruit and veg into your little one’s diet! Packed with the goodness of orange & rainbow carrot, and berry & beetroot (not that they’d know!), they’re deliciously sweet, bursting with yummy flavours and high in fruit and veg too! What’s more, each bake provides a source of fibre, is low in saturated fat and plant based too. With 5 individually wrapped bakes per pack, eating fruit and veg has never been easier or tastier.
So, if you’re a parent who wants to be able to say ‘yes’ instead of ‘no,’ to the constant ‘can I have…’ questions that kids love to ask; then stock up now on new, Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms and relax knowing that with every ‘Yes!’, they’re getting a healthier snack that’s high in fruit and veg!”

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the questions below on this thread as well as completing the survey we have emailed you :

  4. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?

I liked the fact that they contained a good amount of veg for a snack bar and the children really liked the flavours and the fact they got an individually packaged snack.
2. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
Definitely the berry & beetroot
3. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?
As a mid-morning or mid-afternoon / after school snack
4. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
That they are low in sugar and don't fill them up too much.
5. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?
Possibly something green? Apple and spinach? Or a cherry flavoured one.

  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?
My little boy loves the other soreen bars so he liked that he could tell it was the same range. The packaging if an appealing colour. He liked the taste and the squidgy texture. I liked the fact that it has more fruit and veg in, and less sugar, than your average bar. They taste nice and sweet too.
  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
We both preferred the Berry one by a long way. The orange one we found a bit too heavy on the orange flavouring.
  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?
Mid morning or afternoon snack, or as a pudding some days.
  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
Not too much sugar, tasty and if possible recyclable packaging.
  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?
Apple and squash Blackberry and carrot Banana and something!
DennisTMenace · 19/04/2021 21:03
  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?
I like that they seem like a cake/treat, but aren't as high sugar or full of filler or artificial sweetener.
  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
The berry one but they happily ate both flavours and would again.
  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?
Morning or afternoon snack or lunch pudding. At home and out and about.
  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
I insist on no artificial sweetener. Preferably lower sugar, but do give treats too.
  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?
Reading the ingredients, all the vegetable content seemed to be juice. Why not add whole vegetable? It would be more beneficial. My kids like all the normal flavours and the Halloween/Easter chocolate orange ones, so everything you have done has been a hit so far. Love the individual portion sizes that can be chucked in a bag and still fresh if not eaten. Reducing packaging or making it compostable would make me buy more often.
PetyaV · 20/04/2021 00:01

My children liked the fruity taste of the snack.
They both preferred Orange and carrot one.
They ate it both as a mid morning and afternoon snack.
When I buy snacks I look for healthy snacks containing less or no sugar,no artificial ingredients, preservatives and colourants.
I would like to see more fruity flavours-banana,apple,cherry.

  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?

He liked the packaging, and he loved the idea of vegetables in a cake! He's had other Soreen mini loaves as snacks before so he was used to the texture, although he's complained a few times about bits being stuck to his teeth.

  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?

The Berry and Beetroot - which was my favourite too! It was easier to distinguish the flavours in this one than in the Orange and Carrot.

  1. When would your child eat this product?

As a snack when out and about, or as a "treat" after actually having a nap!

  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?

Low sugar content, 100 calories or under, and if there's fruit and/or veg in it, that's a bonus too.

  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?

Apple and Spinach, Lemon and Courgette (one of my favourite cake flavours!)

Thelongdarkteatime · 20/04/2021 08:44

The added veg, we already like the apple and strawberry flavour so welcomed the addition of veg in these new flavours.

Both children liked both but there was a slight preference for the berry&beetroot flavour.

Mid-morning or afternoon depending how strong their breakfast was and what time they had it, 80% of the time it was afternoon snack.
  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
My youngest one has a dairy, soya and egg intolerance so to find snacks for him is a challenge, most of todays foods contain milk and soya, I like soreen snacks as they are vegan and my little one enjoys eating them, I would however like to see the palm oil removed and the fruit and veg content to be raised in future.
  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?
More summer fruits would be fab, peach flavour, blueberry flavour, cherry, endless possibilities and of course keep up with the veg addition i think thats the right path.

  1. Fair to say my child liked the idea of these products the most.

  2. The Carrot and Orange one

  3. After school snack - when we normally have malt loaf/banana soreen.

  4. Filling. Low(ish) in sugar, high in fat - ideally ‘healthy’ fat. Low salt. Tasty. Minimal packaging.

  5. not sure really. The idea of including veg is great but in reality my kids aren’t that keen (they do eat real veg!).

BlueShrew · 20/04/2021 13:18

  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?

It feels like a treat - both because it's cake-like and individually wrapped (I often make our own snacks!)

  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?

Berry and beetroot

  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?

We try not to have snacks most days but these are great for long days out, when starving after swimming or to keep in my bag in case we spend longer on a walk than intended, for example.

  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?

That it's vegan, low sugar, low salt and nutritious. Also that the packaging, if any, is preferably fully compostable or at very least fully recyclable, which is where these disappointingly fell down. I thought the outer wrapper was normal paper and hoped inside would be more normal paper and l could compost it all. Unfortunately, the outer wrapper was lined with plastic and the inner wrappers were fully plastic. This is the only reason I'm not sure I'll buy them.

  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?

Any fruit would work, and mine would eat any veg except parsnip or aubergine! Suggestions from DC age 4 are corn on the cob, strawberries, raspberries and broccoli. HmmGrin

Burritka · 20/04/2021 14:09
  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?
I would say the fact it is vegan as my lo is allergic to CMP, my older one said that they taste great.
  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
Berry and Beetroot.
  1. When would your child eat this product?
Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example? They would normally eat it as healthy snack when we are out and about so usually mid morning/midday.
  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
That they contain health , natural ingredients and are not to sweet.
  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?
Hmmm maybe butternut squash and papaya?
catmg · 20/04/2021 14:20
  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?

I liked the fact that my children liked them! My children were not turned off by the fact that there was veg inside.

  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?

Berry Beetroot.

  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?

We have this to my oldest child to take to school as a mid morning snack, and /or to have as an after school snack. My youngest child has these at the weekend, they are handy to throw in my handbag too in case of emergency.

  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?

Not too much sugar. Something that will give them good energy.

  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?

Anything at all query veggies in but not just paying lip service to vegetables, actually getting a good percentage in the ingredient list.

I think the proposed price point is a bit high at £1.75. I've never seen the usual soreen snack bars for more than £1.40 in my supermarket and can't see how an increase of 0.35 could be justified here.

jewels3000 · 20/04/2021 14:48

My child loved the flavours and texture of these Veg-mmms. They are the perfect size for a snack.
My child loved both equally - I thought he may taste the veg but he loved them.
He had this as both mid-morning snacks and also mid-afternoon.
What is important to me is getting a snack that is not full of sugar, I know a lot of food targeted to children can contain hidden sugars but I was pleased with the nutritional content of these and the great flavours.
I think there is definitely scope for more flavours, maybe sweet potato and courgettes.

sadscorpion · 20/04/2021 14:55

  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?
They are a convenient size for a portable snack. They are relatively low in sugar compared to other cake-type products (although DD wouldn't usually have that type of thing for a snack anyway).
  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
Unfortunately DD didn't like either of them, she didn't get on with the texture of them. I preferred the orange one although I also found the texture a bit unusual.

Queenfreak · 20/04/2021 23:02
  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?

For me- my child has a dairy allergy (fine with may contain), so its really nice to find a commercially available treat which she likes, and doesn't cost a fortune. Usually I make everything at home, so it's nice to 'grab and go' for a change, and know that it will be fine stuck at the bottom of my bag for a while (my homebakes obviously go off far quicker).
My dd loved the taste of both, and loves a treat!

  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
Beetroot and berries, as do I. I found the orange and carrot had a bitter after taste (though dd didn't seem to mind/notice)
  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?

As part of a lunch at nursery, or a snack when we are out and about.

  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?

Clearly marked allergens (disturbingly still not always clear), portion size (I find lots of things too generous for children) at least a vague waft of healthiness, value for money.

  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?

Mango or pineapple with yellow sweet peppers, or butternut squash.

dancingdolphinsagain · 21/04/2021 08:35
  1. What did you and your child like most about Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms?

The fruit flavour was appealing to my child, as well as it being a familiar product as they have the regular strawberry ones already.

  1. What was your child’s favourite flavour?
The berry- the orange flavour was a bit too strong for her.
  1. When would your child eat this product? Perhaps a mid-morning snack or after lunch for example?
As an after nursery snack or after lunch.
  1. What is important to you when buying snacks for your child?
Low sugar, something to get some fruit and veg in, appealing to child.
  1. What other flavours would you like to see in the Soreen Fruit & Veg-Mmms range?

Not sure!

As an aside and I realise I wasn’t asked for any negative feedback but I’ll give it anyway- my veg hating child won’t eat these if she sees the packaging as she does not want to eat a beetroot or carrot cake and the pictures on the front put her off. Once unwrapped and offered she will eat them.
