This activity is now closed

This is the feedback thread for the 60 Mumsnetters who have been testing Nitty Gritty’s new nit comb before launch, alongside the original version.

Here’s what Nitty Gritty has to say: “You can beat head lice and nits without nasty chemicals because our Nitty Gritty Comb is exactly what your family needs to quickly and easily get rid of all head lice, nits and even the 'live' eggs which other products leave behind to hatch a new generation of little monsters in your children's hair. And, we’re really excited to be testing a new version with double the grooves, designed to be doubly as efficient.”

Testers, please give your feedback by answering the questions below as well as completing the survey we’ll have emailed you:

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
  2. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?
  3. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?

All testers who give the required feedback will be entered into a prize draw where one tester will win a £300 voucher for the store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

I think it removed eggs and lice about the same as the old comb.
The new comb did pull the hair a little.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

I would pay more for quality as I want to get the best results.
It’s a good idea to have a guarantee but it doesn’t really bother me.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?

Yes 100% it will always be my no 1 choice. Amazing product.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

I have always been happy with the original nitty gritty, but the new one did remove a few more eggs, however it pulled on his thick hair more which made it a more painful process.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

No I don't think it does much more than the old one, which was a more pain free process. The lifetime guarantee is a nice extra, which gives peace of mind.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why? No I think I would choose the original one over it, it does a great job and glides through the hair easily. I would always choose nitty gritty over chemical lotions and other combs though.

Thank you!

How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
I didn't notice much difference. I think if anything the old one combed through a bit better but the new one caught more things in the hair (including tangles).

Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?
I preferred the old comb so I'd rather buy that one and definitely wouldn't pay more for the new one. £10 seems like a good upper price limit for either.

The lifetime guarantee does give confidence, even though I can't imagine taking advantage of it.

Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
It would now because there doesnt seem to be anything else as reliable on the market. We've tried the foams and gels before but they're messy, don't work any better in the long run and each re-infestation means more purchasing. I like that combing can be incorporated into the normal bedtime routine and doesn't make children feel like they're being medically treated or self conscious.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
I like the new Nitty gritty comb it removed the eggs more easily than the old Nitty gritty comb. Both were a little scratchy on the scalp though.
  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?Definitely i think it is far more cost effective than lotions and potions i like the lifetime guarantee.
  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
Definitely, it is more cost effective and isnt harmful.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
Yes, it did remove some lice that the first comb hadn't removed. But in order to be more scientific, it would have been better if we had been told to do the same in reverse ie comb one side first with new comb, then second with old one! Perhaps a second comb at the hair will always reveal more?
  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?
It is great it has a lifetime guarantee, and I actually once emailed them and got a newer one!
  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
Nits are such a nightmare - yes I would always pay a little extra for the 'latest and greatest'!

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

My children didnt like the comb for some reason as they complaint that it is too sharp and hurt their scalp.I have a normal plastic one that I got from Wilkinsons and they are happy about it.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

Nope. I don't think I would go for it just because of the life time Guarantee.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?

Unfortunately not as my kids didn't like it.

How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
The new comb went through the hair more smoothly didn’t seem to snag as much. it did remove slightly more eggs than the original the teeth seemed closer together.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?
Yes I think it is worth the extra money. The lifetime guarantee gives good peace of mind
  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
I would go to the comb first for nit treatment, I think the comb does work really well and I prefer to try with no chemicals first. I got a lot of the eggs out with this comb.
Sparklyboots · 09/12/2019 16:59

Hi Nitty Gritty. Do you know that the phrase nitty gritty is regarded in some quarters as problematic and that the use of this despite those pr9belems is regarded in some quarters as racist?

madmumofteens · 09/12/2019 17:45

Sparkyboots I was about to say the same thing!!

Miaow1234 · 10/12/2019 07:58
  1. It did remove more eggs but I didn’t see any difference in putting through my daughters curly hair.
  2. I may do depending on price difference.
  3. Yes it would as I’ve also had and no 1 work great on my thick hair. I don’t believe in all the chemicals in the nit treatments going on my children’s hair and skin and from what I’ve seen they aren’t terribly effective anymore. A great and effective product.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb?
Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily? In my opinion I think both are excellent products .The new comb definitely removed more eggs .With the product provided the comb glided through the hair ,which is a must for a child to sit for a long time
  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

As above I could not find any fault with either comb , but will say if I had to buy one it would be the newer version .

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why? more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?
Wish I had purchased this product the 1st time my child had nits .I have wasted so much money on other fads .Yes definitely happy with the lifetime guarantee.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

I thought they were both very good but I preferred the new comb as I thought it was gentler on the hair and didn't pull as many out. It also removed quite a lot more lice and eggs so it was more effective. I was really pleased with the performance of the new comb and it has made a very good difference on the number of lice left.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

Yes I think I would be willing to pay more for the new comb as it did a better job of removing lice and eggs. I do feel reassured with knowing there is a lifetime guarantee and this would make me more inclined to buy the comb. It is good to know that once you pay once for a comb, it is covered forever.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?

Yes this will now replace my old method as it was much more effective. I will continue to use it as and when needed during lie outbreaks. I have recommended this product to other mums in my son's class who have been affected by lice.

Thanks for letting me try out the combs, they were really useful right now!

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

It was perfectly fine but in all honesty I didn’t notice much difference between it and the old version.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

I wouldn’t be particularly motivated to spend more as I didn’t notice much difference. It is good to know it has a guarantee.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
I generally use a combination of comb and nit treatment from the chemist, I think this gives the best chance of nipping it in the bud. I wouldn’t bother trying a different brand of nit comb though.

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove more head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?

The new comb did remove more head lice and eggs. I felt the comb didn't feel as smooth pulling through the hair than the old one but my daughter really liked it.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

I would be willing to spend up to 12 pounds on a comb. The lifetime guarantee wouldn't help, we often lose them as they slip in between things in drawers so replace every so often anyway.

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
Either Nitty Gritty I would choose in the future both do a great job.
ArnoldJRimmer · 12/12/2019 09:31
  1. The new Nitty Gritty comb definitely appeared more effective than the original for removing eggs and lice as it removed more of both but unfortunately also hair which my DD complained about each time. She said it was “sore” compared to the original and it took some persuasion to get her to sit still to allow me to use it on her. The original comb was easier to comb through her mid length, fine hair.
  1. I would be willing to spend a little more on the new comb because it did remove more lice and eggs. Though I’m confident that the original would also have done so but just in a bit more time. I definitely have a greater amount of trust in the product as a result of its lifetime guarantee and this would make me more likely to purchase a Nitty Gritty comb.
  1. I will definitely be incorporating the Nitty Gritty comb into our weekly nit combing but only once I’ve worked out the best way of detangling her hair first and keeping it that way to prevent it hurting her by pulling her hair out. My DD wasn’t a fan of the lotion as it made her eyes stream so I won’t be using that.
FairytaleofBykerGrove · 14/12/2019 05:44
  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb?

It removed a few extra eggs than the original.
Both combs needed wet hair and conditioner to go through my child’s very thick hair

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb?

No, I’d probably go with the cheaper one. Lifetime guarantee wouldn’t sway me as I would likely lose the comb before it needed replaced anyway

  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?
Yes it would (or the original) They were both thorough and better than other bit combs I’ve used.
Ren1974 · 15/12/2019 09:47

Do the makers of this product realise the origins of the phrase "nitty gritty"!? I suggest they look into it :(

  1. How did the new Nitty Gritty comb perform in comparison to the original comb? Did it remove move head lice and eggs? Did it comb through the hair more easily?
i thought it performed just as well, i LOVE my nitty gritty, my daughter has long, thick brown hair and she is seemingly loved by lice! I felt it did not comb through more easily, but then i have no complaints about the original on that score.
  1. Would the new Nitty Gritty comb be your first choice of nit treatment in the future? Why?

Not over the original, i feel the same about both of them, it would however be my first choice over other combs - its easy o use, easy to hold, easy to clean, doesn't seem to pull my daughters hair and works WAY better than any other combs.

  1. Would you be willing to spend a little more on the new Nitty Gritty comb than on the original Nitty Gritty comb? Do you feel differently as a result of knowing the Nitty Gritty comb has a lifetime guarantee?

I'm happy with my original nitty gritty so no, not if both were available but i would always choose a nitty gritty and this has cemented that. No i don't feel differently.

How do you get the bugs out of the comb please? I can't do this, tried washing, scrubbing etc but it's still gunked up.

NorthernLightss · 20/12/2019 22:03

Have you tried wiping the comb with tissue paper? The lice should wipe away easily.

Onions I have either warm water in the sink, or a jug and swish the comb in there between passes through the hair. Seems to work, and it's easy to see how many head pets have been removed.
