Recruitment is now closed.

HyperJar is looking for Mumsnet users to test a new money management app that lets you plan, budget and grow your spending power in Jars. Please note this app is NOT a replacement for your bank account and will NOT affect your credit score. For more information on HyperJar, check out the website here.

Selected testers will be required to:

  • Download the app from the App Store or Google Play, sign up and order a HyperJar card (it takes about a week to arrive)
  • Create a Jar so that HyperJar can send £10 to your new account to spend using the app, wherever you like
  • Transfer some money from your bank to your HyperJar account. This can be spent wherever you’d usually spend – no need to change shopping habits
  • Start testing out the app (instructions on exactly how to do this will be sent to testers)

We’d like you to test HyperJar over four weeks. Once the test is over, if you don’t want to carry on using HyperJar, they will close your account and help you transfer any money you haven’t spent back into your bank account.

Here is how HyperJar describes itself: “HyperJar is the world’s smartest payment app. An easy, digital version of jam-jar budgeting. The Jars you create reflect your life, your spending and your goals. Jars for groceries, lunches, Christmas, kids’ clubs, nights out, holidays… With HyperJar, you can see where your money is going, not just where it went.

“So why use HyperJar? 1. Clearer, easier, happier money when you plan in Jars. For groceries, lunches, holidays. For life. 2. Shared spending, solved. Plan and spend together with Group Jars. Easy pop-up joint accounts and digital kitties for 2-30 people. 3. Make planning pay with our partners. Lock in money with them for an inflation-beating Annual Growth Rate of 4.8%. 4. Spend directly from any Jar with the world’s smartest payment card.”

Selected testers will be required to leave feedback on a private thread on Mumsnet as well as complete a short survey. All testers who do will be entered into a prize draw where 3 MNers will win a £100 voucher each of their choice (from a list).

Please don’t download the app directly from the App Store if you want to take part in this test – HyperJar are waiting to finish a few features which will be ready for Mumsnet users by the time we’ve selected our testers.

If you would like to sign up to test this app, please click here.

Thanks and good luck.

@Lovemenorca Don't worry, you'll still be eligible for selection. We'll be selecting testers next week. If your name comes out of the hat we'll send you an email to let you know! Smile

LucyBMumsnet · 15/10/2019 12:04

@foreverblessedbee Yes, the early stage app is available in the App Store but not yet on Google Play. MNers will get access to the latest iOS and Android versions if they are selected to take part in the test Smile

Hi @TooTrueToBeGood Thanks for your comment. HyperJar have asked us to pass on the following:
"PFS is one of Europe’s largest e-money issuers. It works in in 25 countries with the ability to transact in 23 currencies. As well as HyperJar, its clients include local authorities in the UK, banks, mobile operators and government bodies across Europe. PFS is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority in the UK, and by the Bank of Ireland. Any money deposited is held in segregated accounts with major UK high street banks until it’s spent."

LucyBMumsnet · 18/10/2019 10:12

HyperJar would also like to add the following:

"Hi @TooTrueToBeGood,
Thank you for your comment. I am Laura, heading up customer support at HyperJar. We are pretty new in the market – we haven’t yet launched to the public – and have been deliberately low-profile, so there won’t be much of an online presence for a little while more.

We have partnered with Mumsnet to get important feedback on the app before a full public launch. We understand that a concern will be about the safety of money, but I want to reassure you that anything deposited is kept in segregated accounts at a UK retail bank (like keeping it locked in a safe until it’s spent). We think we’ve built something that will help with everyday spending and budgeting, and need as much feedback from early users so we can learn what we’ve got right and what we need to change. To give you an idea of how the app works, there are virtual Jars that operate like mini sub- accounts, all visible on one screen. You can budget money in these Jars for everyday things, like groceries, transport, clothing and so on, and when you are ready to spend you just link that Jar to your prepaid Mastercard card and pay directly from it. If you want to learn anything more, let me know. Thank you, Laura."

Hi @Lougle , here's a response from HyperJar:

"Thank you for your comment. Here some reasons why we are different from other money apps:

1. Because we’re not a bank and don’t offer credit, your credit score isn’t checked or affected when you open a HyperJar account.

2. We don’t limit the number of Jars you can open with us - so you can have as many mini sub-accounts as you like to help with chunking out your everyday spending;

3. A unique HyperJar feature is that you can share any Jar with up to 30 people. So you can put money away together for a group holiday, and all pay from the same Jar when you’re away. If you’ve opened the Jar, you decide who can pay in, spend from or see notes in the Jar.

4. We have some of the UK’s favourite brands and businesses on the app, like Lidl, Shell, Boden and Virgin Wines. If you’re happy to lock-in money with them, it’s a great way to budget automatically because when you spend with these brands using your HyperJar card, the money comes from the right Jar. Any money you’re happy to commit before spending gets an inflation-beating 4.8% Annual Growth Rate, calculated and added to the Jar daily."

LucyBMumsnet · 21/10/2019 12:19

Hi @WitchfinderGeneralHarrumph, HyperJar have responded with the following:

"Thank you for your comment. HyperJar is free to use, there are no hidden fees ever! So if you put £100 in your account you will be able to spend all the £100 wherever Mastercard is accepted. We don’t charge you to load the card and don’t charge you to use it. Thanks."

LucyBMumsnet · 21/10/2019 12:21

Hi @sandgrown , here's what HyperJar have to say:

"Thank you for your comment. We definitely welcome technophobes Smile! We created HyperJar with the intention of giving everyone a brilliantly easy to use tool for everyday money management. We have partnered with Mumsnet to get as much feedback as we can in these early stages, so that we understand what we’ve got right and what we need to improve. Thanks."

LucyBMumsnet · 21/10/2019 16:24

Hi @Thehagonthehill , here's a response from HyperJar:

"Thank you for your message. The HyperJar card is not a credit card, but a prepaid card (which means you can spend only up to the balance of the card, there are no fees and you cannot go overdrawn on it). It’s connected to your Jars and app so no need to move money to pay, You simply select the Jar you want to pay from and the smart card will recognise your selection and take money from that Jar."

LucyBMumsnet · 22/10/2019 10:22

Hi @Thehagonthehill, HyperJar have replied with the following:

"Thank you for your message. You can link your card to the Jar you want to pay from before you go to the shop, or buy online. The card will remain linked to your chosen Jar until you change it in the app. So for example, if you are going out to do your grocery shopping, you can link your Grocery Jar at the beginning of the day and change it when you are done."

LucyBMumsnet · 28/10/2019 15:47

Hello @lovemenorca
Apologies for the slight delay! We're working on selecting people at the moment and we'll be in touch with some selected people in the next couple of days Smile

JustineBMumsnet · 04/11/2019 09:48

@Reluctantbettlynch we've selected some users to be testers, but we're still recruiting for a handful more testers as well. We'll be letting those selected know very shortly but they're kept secret for now

JustineBMumsnet · 04/11/2019 12:08

@Gonetoofarmaybe this isn't a promotion, this is a product test we're recruiting for, and it wouldn't be responsible to let testers know they've been selected way in advance of us being ready for them to begin testing. Though we can usually give estimates, it's not always possible for us to know exactly when this will be.

We're sorry you didn't find the instructions clear enough and have signed up to HyperJar already, but signing up via a survey form and waiting to hear about selection is standard process for a product test.

If you'd like more information please do feel free to get in contact at [email protected]

JustineBMumsnet · 04/11/2019 15:36

@Gonetoofarmaybe we're just giving people a heads up about a future prize draw at this stage - we don't have opening date for this yet, so it's not possible for us to give a closing date. If you've been selected then we will give further information about this at a later date.

LucyBMumsnet · 06/11/2019 16:41

Hi @Lovemenorca - though we're still recruiting testers we are working with quotas to an extent for this product test, and as a result you unfortunately weren't selected to take part. However, we're aware you've downloaded the app already and HyperJar are still keen to help you out with using it - they're aware of this bug and they are in the process of fixing it. Please contact HyperJar support via this link and they will be able to help you with transferring your money back.

JustineBMumsnet · 07/11/2019 09:46

@Lovemenorca If you contact HyperJar, as mentioned above, they will make sure the money is transferred back to you. Their customer service team is happy to help and are contactable via live chat and email, replying in less than 24 hours.

LucyBMumsnet · 22/11/2019 09:56

Hi @JC4PMPLZ,

HyperJar have asked us to pass on the following: "Thank you for the message. When you use your card abroad, please ask to pay in the local currency as HyperJar does not charge any fees for currency exchange. More info can be found here"

LucyBMumsnet · 29/11/2019 10:53

@VeganCow and @PJ04JCW - you can find more information about the 4.8% AGR on HyperJar's webpage here. If you would like to discuss this (or any other queries) with HyperJar, feel free to get in touch using their in app live support service Smile
