This is the feedback thread for those 30 MNers who tested the Amazon Fire Kids Edition tablet.

Here’s what Amazon has to say about the product: “Fire Kids Edition tablets are built around three ideas: 1) kids break things, 2) kids want real tablets, not a toy, and 3) parents don’t want to worry about the bill. Each full-featured tablet comes with a kid-friendly case, and a 2-year worry free guarantee—if they break it, we’ll replace it, no questions asked. The device also comes with a year subscription to Fire for Kids Unlimited for unlimited access to thousands of kid-friendly books, movies, TV shows, educational apps, and games, and best-in-class parental controls to manage usage limits, content access and help set educational goals.”

Testers, please answer the questions below:

  • What does your child think about of the Fire Kids Edition tablet? Did they enjoy using it?
  • What did you think about the protection package that is included with the device (i.e. the kid-friendly case and 2-year worry free guarantee)?
  • How easy did you find the parental controls to use? If so, what were your favourite features?
  • Was your child happy with the content available through the 1 year Fire for Kids Unlimited subscription? Did you/they feel anything was missing?
  • What did you think about the Parent Dashboard?

Non-testers, what parental control features would be most important to you in a child’s tablet?

All non-testers who post below will be entered into a prize draw and one person will win a £300 voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

You got me with the unbreakable/guarantee line- my lights dinner and cracked screen on their kindle fire

HRoosevelt · 21/02/2018 11:55

My kids dropped and cracked screen...

NambiBambi · 21/02/2018 12:54

Non-tester here. Access issues are my biggest fear about tablets. I want to be absolutely sure my children will not be able to access websites that are unsuitable for them - this would include news and other websites that are mainstream but not always appropriate for them to read all the time. It concerns me more than time limits and so on. My elder DD might well need one for school soon so I am reading with interest.

GlowGlow · 21/02/2018 16:16

Non tester. I'm looking for a tablet that has age appropriate content with nothing strange sneaking in - I've noticed some odd and inappropriate videos popping up on YouTube kids for example. Durability of course. (I'm very impressed with the guarantee for the Amazon one.) Easy to navigate for children on the younger side. (Dd will be 3.5 when we get one.) No hidden charges, just upfront about all costs.

foxessocks · 21/02/2018 17:02

Non tester I'd just want to be able to see everything my dc downloaded

LostMyBaubles · 21/02/2018 17:23

The tablet look fab.

Im always on the look out for ways to control screen time and when my kids get screen time for it to be limited to a few options rather than having the big scary internet at their fingers!

GinYummy · 21/02/2018 21:11

This looks like a fab product!
I want to be able to easily view what my children have been looking at and how long they were using the tablet.

CordeliaScott · 22/02/2018 00:09

Non tester (although we do actually have one) - what is important to me is that the children can't run up bills whether with in game purchases or by downloading apps.

My DD is 3 and loves her Amazon Fire. We had previously bought her an innotab but she wasn't keen and still wanted my iPad. However she sees her Fire as similar to my iPad and now leaves mine alone (usually)

GeekyWombat · 22/02/2018 01:41

Non tester: internet security is vital and key, even with young DC and is part of the reason why I love the walled garden approach amazon offers (and all the kids content).

One big bugbear though - could we please have YouTube Kids as an app please!

SandLand · 22/02/2018 08:00

None tester :I'd like a notification when they download an app. It is set to not alllow anything over a 7 rsting, but some stuff with 3+ doesn't sit right with me. And sometimes it takes me a couple of days to check everything (bad mummy!).

vincenta · 22/02/2018 11:23

Non tester. For me like for other parents to controll what my kids can wcth and can download online would be great
worry free garanty sounds amazing too.

MargoLovebutter · 22/02/2018 11:43

Non-testers, what parental control features would be most important to you in a child’s tablet?

No financial details can be input, so that any ordering has to take place separately on an adult's tablet. Ordered items are then transferred across to the child's tablet. The child's tablet should have no transactional functionality at all.

Yes to parental controls, but I was always on hand when my DC were little and they were using the internet. I think an adult should be in the same room as a child using the internet, it shouldn't be something an under 10 year old does on their own with no adult supervision, regardless of parental control settings.

MTBMummy · 22/02/2018 11:47

Non Tester - but both DC's already have Amazon Fire Tablets, and I love them

The fact I can remotely monitor what they're spending their time on
I can allow apps with chat and paid but block those bits
the fact it switches off at a certain time and they only get an allocated amount of time on videos and apps (I have set ours to unlimited reading until the time limit)
and that I can block bastard YouTube

I frequently recommend them to other parents, and help set them up securely

I also have to add, I had a friends fire die on them, and Amazon support where absolutely amazing, after getting their verification that I could speak on their behalf, they were exceptinally helpful and sent out a free replacement.

I would love a function to stop my child leaving the app I have opened for her and opening other apps

stephc007 · 22/02/2018 17:35

Non tester: I'd like the ability to see your child's history viewing/browsing history quickly and easily, maybe even sent in a summary email...

Dougthepug · 22/02/2018 17:55

Non tester, I'd like to be able to set a maximum time for being on a game/Internet. Also being able to control what they can access on YouTube is vital too.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/02/2018 19:05

Non tester

Definitely controls on what can be accessed via the Internet including channels such as YouTube and Facebook.

Roxabox · 22/02/2018 19:53

Non tester here! The thing i worry about the most is not knowing what my kid is accessing on the web.

HattiesPincushion · 22/02/2018 22:23

Non tester

I'd like to be able to control what they're able to access on the internet and also be able to stop them from buying anything, such as making in app purchases.

Firewall · 23/02/2018 09:59

Non-tester . A way of linking the kids tablet to my own would be great so I can view everything my child goes on and restrict things from my own. So it doesn't seem too invasive.

lolly2011 · 23/02/2018 10:13

Non Tester - I am a fan of the fact if it gets broken it will be replaced, you are right even with the best intentions they can be broken. I will definitely be trying the Fire for kids.

BellaVida · 23/02/2018 10:27

For optimum parental control, I would want a simple dashboard which:-

  • allows you to input the age of the child and automatically filters any inappropriate content, including TV, YouTube etc.
  • blocks online chat including on multi-player games.
  • has a timer to restrict or lock the screen at specified times.
  • blocks downloading apps and send automatic alerts to parents.
  • prevents them from sending or sharing images.
mum25littleones · 23/02/2018 10:46

Non tester. My 3 year old loves YouTube to watch kids opening kinder eggs etc so to know I can lock programmes with any words I don't think are appropriate is ideal. Locking certain features is great but I find having them sit with you so you know what they're watching the best preventative measure.

sharond101 · 23/02/2018 10:49

Non tester I don't want them talking to strangers online. I'd like to approve who they can talk with.

mugginsalert · 23/02/2018 15:02

Re parental controls - in app purchasing, access to age appropriate internet are important. Would like to be able to limit time on specific apps.

I would like to be able to send audible books to my son's profile so he can access them - currently they're only available to my profile, which means he then can access inappropriate content.
