This is the feedback thread for the 100 Mumsnetters who have been testing a Gousto recipe box, including recipes from their new range in partnership with Annabel Karmel.

Here’s what Timo Boldt, CEO and Founder of Gousto says: “For people who want to cook and enjoy good food together but don’t always have the time, ingredients or know-how to do it well, Gousto delivers simple ways to (re) discover the joys of cooking, so you can choose what you want, cook it with confidence and enjoy sharing it with others.

Taking the hassle out of planning, shopping and cooking, Gousto delivers up to 4 meals for the week with the ingredients and recipe ready to make, so there’s no more ‘what’s for dinner’ panic.

This month, we’ve launched a 3-month partnership with family cooking expert, Annabel Karmel to introduce 20 additional family-friendly recipes to our menu. Supporting busy families with tried-and-tested, nutritionally balanced meals, proven to suit fussy eaters, including Heavenly Hidden Veg Bolognese and Mouthwatering Veggie Mac & Cheese – the new recipes will allow you to enjoy cooking dishes which suit everyone around the dinner table.

Each recipe uses Gousto’s fresh, quality ingredients – including 100% British meat, sustainable fish and free-range eggs from trusted suppliers – allowing you to know what’s in every meal and feel confident you’re feeding your family well.”^

Testers, once you’ve tested the recipe box by cooking all recipes, please give your feedback by answering the below questions:

1.How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

^^Gousto was very easy to use. As a family we viewed the recipes on our smartphones
Like a gastronomical tinder we 'swiped right' on any we didn't fancy and perused for the more enticing options. I then had a quick check through the method to ensure it wasn't too time time consuming.

The meals do have a lot of 'meanwhile' instructions which seemed to suggest the cook is an able multi tasker. We got used to checking through it all and divvying out chopling/prep jobs to one of the DC^^

2.Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

^^The veg content was good. Maybe a little more stealth would be needed for little ones to avoid them turning their nose up at chunky/obvious veg. Some had considerable added sugar though, but I presume that could be optional.

3.What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

I think the range of options is good to be fair. It may be a good idea to separate into timings/easiness of prep. The beauty of a Gousto box is It's convenience for a working family. After a long hard day some of these were still a little faffy and made you want to reach for the fresh pasta and pesto option. However, the taste of the recipes were really good and did exceed other box meals we've had. There is a freshness to the sauces we had that is so much better than jars!

4.What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

Hmmm there seems little difference really but if the idea is she's done the sums in calculating a healthy nutritional meal that is a bonus. The oriental fish meal was slightly bland but the meatball bake was enjoyed by all.
5.How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

We enjoyed the change, the newness to the recipes. All the researching had been done and we could just choose. The children seems to be more willing to try as they'd been more involved in the choosing in a very visual way.
6.Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Yes. Not on a weekly basis as the cost would be hard to justify. But during busy working weeks or chaotic times of year this would be a great go to option. A considerable step up from ready meals without the decadence and unhealthy take away option.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

I found the website very easy to use and ordering was straightforward. Selecting recipes was great, my DD (10) chose them and loved reading what they were. Recipes were fairly easy to follow but AK meatballs were a bit of a faff!

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

My DD is very fussy and she was willing try everything. She loved the lamb byrana. I was so pleased she tried it all and we really ate well last week. All the ingredients were top quality and this showed in the taste. Only one problem I had was the apple was rotten but was able to use some of it.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

I think there was a good choice of recipes, lots we didn’t fancy though. We loved the AK meatballs, very tasty, the chicken and sweet corn soup wasn’t a hit. No amount of cornflour would thicken it and I was like water. The portion sizes were huge and we were able to freeze some.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

I’m not fussed about ordering AK to be honest, I only ordered it because Gousto wanted us to! Was tasty though.

  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

We don’t plan and we don’t usually eat this well. It was great to know what we were having and it was all prepped for us.

  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Not weekly no as I can’t afford it, but I’d definitely order every few months or for a SC holiday as it was so easy.

Thanks for letting me test 😄

How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Ordering was really easy. The website was really clear. The only problem was choosing which meals to have as they all looked so nice. Quite a few were out of stock but I think that was because I ordered a little later in the day. I found that you could choose different meals by adjusting the delivery date. The recipe cards were really easy to follow and the meals looked just like the pictures. Having everything measured out made it more efficient. My 11 year old daughter helped with some and enjoyed following the instructions. (Something she's not always into - cake with no flour anyone?)

Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

The ingredients were lovely and seemed nice and fresh. They also seemed to be of good quality. I felt some dishes could have had more veg in. For example the pork Mexican chilli, I would normally add veg to the chilli but then the slaw on the side did make up for that a bit. My only other concern was that on the box it said you could freeze all fish or meat until you were ready to use them but on the salmon it said not to freeze as it had already been frozen. If I hadn't checked the packet as well we could have all been ill.

What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

Good choice of recipes and pushed me out of my comfort zone a bit. We enjoyed the pork chilli although found it a bit spicy, would make with half the Chipotle paste next time. The Annabel Karmel salmon went wrong, but that was my fault as my oven broke down in the middle and I had to finish it in the microwave so I can't really comment on that. The chicken schnitzel was lovely but mine and dds favourite was the lamb with houmous, although DS wouldn't eat the houmous but he's fussy anyway. I particularly enjoyed the little salads that went on the sides. The portions were really generous.

What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

I am not really bothered by the Annabel Karmel connection. I ordered the meal because we were asked to but there were actually other meals I would rather have ordered.

How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

I usually make a meal plan and then shop. I tend to cook similar things every week. I felt the ordering saved me a lot of time as I didn't have to think up meals then break them down into ingredients. It also pushed me to try different things. Time was obviously also saved on shopping. I found a big difference in cooking as everything was measured and ready to go. No cooking bolognese and then realising halfway through you don't have any tinned tomatoes. (Yes I have done this). It also seemed to make less mess as the sachets went straight in the bin.

Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Not on a regular basis as it would cost too much for me but I would possibly use them for a self catering holiday or for a special treat.

beadyboo · 22/10/2017 10:08

Thank you for selecting me for the trial.

  1. Selecting the meals was easy. Lots of choice and interesting sounding meals. The website was really easy to use and delivery was straightforward. A couple of the meals took longer than stated on the card, and there was a few things that needed to be done at the same time which wasn’t obvious at first read of the recipe. I also found that I got a bit confused occasionally as my meals were for four and the recipe cards are for 2 with the adjustment made in brackets at the side. One night I accidentally put all the rice packets I’d been sent into a dish and later realised that half of them were for another recipe!! I think it would be easier to print a recipe card for the right quantities so you’re not constantly double checking measurements.
  1. I really enjoyed the recipes and felt that Gousto were pretty good in terms of quality. Some dishes seemed a bit light on the veg front for my family so I added extra salad etc. to serve, but that’s possibly a taste preference.
  1. They were delicious. The lamb with carrot seed salad and homemade hoummous was out of this world. Some dishes were very hot and after making one with the recommended amount of chilli I toned it down with the haddock gumbo as I wanted the kids to eat it too.
  1. The only available Annabelle Karmel meal when I ordered was the salmon and Chinese rice. It was fine and we ate it, but was my least favourite of the four. It also seemed the most unhealthy. Lots of honey and soy sauce, so no, I wouldn’t be to bothered about it being specifically designed by AK.
  1. I loved not having the responsibility of meal planning for a week. I just had to buy breakfast and packed lunch food at the supermarket and it was so liberating. I deliberately chose meals I wouldn’t normally cook and we enjoyed them all. I also enjoyed being able to try different flavours without having to head to the international food section of Waitrose and spend a small fortune on special ingredients I may never use again!
  1. Yes! I would definitely use them again. It’s an expensive was to shop, so it wouldn’t be for every day of the week, but school holidays, when time was tight, or when I simply can’t face another week of my stock repertoire of dishes I would definitely use them again.

Couple of photos attached hopefully. I would definitely (and already have) recommend to family and friends.

Be wary folks.

I started a new box order but part way through got confirmation of a family function next week which means we will be away. I therefore never completed the order (you know...where you press Complete/Confirm).

All I’d done is chosen potential recipes.

Bit an email today telling me it will be delivered tomorrow and telling me to update card details.

Not best pleased as nobody will be here for at least three days.

Surely you need to press “Confirm” with an order.

CountessDraculaofGroantham · 22/10/2017 15:44

Yikes! I’ll check mine. I was browsing too.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?
Very easy to navigate the website. Not so easy to choose from the recipes as there was only one Annabel Karmel recipe available which none of us would have eaten (salmon something or other), so it was a case of not being able to try an AK recipe. I found the recipes a bit of a jumble in places, completing one element then setting it aside until you'd completed the rest of the meal which could take a further 20 minutes. I don't set things aside at home, I time everything to be finished at roughly the same time so things don't go cold or need reheating - I can multi-task!
  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?
Confident, but I didn't lack confidence before. I did really enjoy making new things though, and getting ideas for things I would never have thought of trying.
  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?
A bit limited, especially on seasonal vegetarian meals and Annabel Karmel recipes. The meals we tried were very tasty, and we all enjoyed them, but the volume of food produced was too much for us - we're generally a greedy bunch, but we didn't manage to eat all of any of the meals we made in one sitting.
  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?
The one option available was just no good for us - none of us eats salmon. I'm not sure what the difference was between this and the other recipes available ie what marked it out as different.
  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?
I don't plan meals usually, the shopping was obviously far easier than checking recipes etc, I found I was spending longer cooking meals (possibly because they were all new to me, and I had to keep checking the recipe several times). Also, and this is a very important point for me, the number of pans used was far greater than I would like, and for one recipe I had to put the oven on just to roast some broccoli - what a waste of energy!
  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?
Possibly, if I knew I had a busy period coming up, or I couldn't use my regular online grocery shop for some reason. It seemed very expensive, when I considered that I had all the spices, seasonings etc already in my pantry and wouldn't need to buy these.

So first of all, we had a really fun time using the box, my son thought it was really exciting when it arrived and we got to look through all the lovely ingredients. To put it to the test, I ( the non-chef ) did the cooking for a change and my husband (chef) had a break.

  1. Easy to order, Easy to use, recipes easy to follow even for someone with my rusty cooking skills
  2. Very confident the meals would be good as the quality of ingredients were fab and the portion control is done for you
3.Good variety of recipes as changes weekly. The meals pushed us to try stuff we might not have, going for easier sauce jar options instead of freshitty apple slaw 4.Tried the Anna below Karmel meatball recipes which was lovely and much fresher than our version. 5.Gousto differs from how we normally shop in that we probably take easier options ( less fresh, from scratch) die to time restraints but actually it didn't take much longer to make the meals. Plus, I like the portion control aspect as we always make too much. There's no waste either due to the counted out ingredients so even though it's a bit beyond our budget normally - nothings going in the bin and you don't impulse buy at the supermarket.
  1. I would use again if I was in the financial position to do so as the ingredients were great, the meals tasted delicious and it was really engaging for my son to join in and help me cook. Really impressed and enjoyed the chance to do it, thankyou
Periperi chicken, homemade chips and Appleslaw - our favourite

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow recipes and create a meal?

I found the site very easy to use. It was easy to select recipes and place an order. I ordered AK's Meatballs and pasta & Chinese Fish fillets plus Lamb biryani and Peri Peri Chicken. It was fairly easy to follow recipes though I got a bit confused with the doubling up for 4 people as it said double everything then had some things doubled in brackets and not others. Also I thought there should be an egg in the meatballs mix as it was very dry and they all fell apart when I cooked them so turned into a chunky Bolognese though my kids still said it was delicious. I was surprised to find the customer service line open on a Sunday so I called to query this. The lovely young man was not sure if an egg was missing but says he always uses one in his recipe! He said he was sending me a present for the inconvenience and 2 days later a lovely big bar of luxury chocolate turned up - great service!

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and the recipes how confident does Gousto make you feel that you are feeding your family well?

I thought there was too much salt used which is a bit of a concern, 2 x stock cubes in a curry would be far too salty, plus lots of soy sauce. Lovely fresh veg was nice, I usually buy 5% fat mince beef but the mince sent for the meatballs was obviously higher than this and lots of fatty bits, the lamb, which you would expect to be fatty was surprisingly lean though.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the meals you tried?

I would have liked a few more recipes to choose from, especially in the gluten-free range or vegetarian. We thought all the meals chosen were very tasty, the pasta and meatballs was the kids favourite with the lamb biryani a close second all round, the Chinese fish was ok, a little bland and the peri peri chicken was more popular with the adults.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel recipes? Is this something you'd like to continue in the future?

I wasn't too bothered about this as my kids eat/try most things and don't need vegetables to be hidden in things e.g. apples in meatballs! I didn't think the recipe was very good as my meatballs fell apart! I don't think it is necessary to continue this.

  1. How did Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

I tend to stick to the same old favourites and usually only plan a couple of meals at a time so end up shopping too much and getting stressed with the "What are we having for tea" question every night! It really made me start thinking about food again and was very thought provoking to get me out of the food rut.

  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Yes we loved it, we were so excited when the box arrived. The kids loved unpacking all the food and helping to cook the meals. It was a real talking point about what we like to eat and trying new things. I don't want to be tied to order a box every week but would like to dip in and out if possible.

CrumblyMumbly · 22/10/2017 20:05

I also think laminated recipe cards would be better especially with the kids helping and a folder too please! It would also be helpful to have each recipe's food bagged up because everything got jumbled up and it took a while to sort through lots of different packets of oils etc rather than have it all immediately to hand. Maybe I shouldn't have let the kids unpack everything...
Really enjoyed being a tester though, thank you very much.

QOFE · 22/10/2017 20:05

1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Website was easy to use and recipes easy to choose. The recipes were straightforward (if labour/utensil/pan intensive!), so much so that my 14 year old cooked the Palak Paneer herself with no help at all and possibly more amazingly my DP made the Honey Kissed Couscous and very nice it was toi. I did find the dishes made more washing up and had more steps than my usual weeknight meals though. But the results were worth it!

2. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

Hmmmmmm! We are vegetarian and eat a lot of vegetables. I serve a raw salad with almost every meal (even if it's just grated odds and ends of veg with lemon juice and some seeds) so quite honestly the recipes felt a bit light on veg to me and I made a salad to go with 3 of them! I think they were definitely adequate nutritionally but over an extended period of time I'd really feel the lack of nice crunchy raw veg. IE I would never serve an Aubergine Parmigiana without a green veg on the side of some sort. I just couldn't! At least 3 colours of vegetable in every meal is my rule of thumb (obviously we do have sausage and chips or frozen pizza some nights and the world doesn't end but it's the general principle I try to stick to).

Also I was a bit Confused about the salt and sugar we were expected to add, also stock cubes in almost everything. I would never use stock cubes to make cous cous for example, or add sugar to a Thai curry. The results were incredibly tasty but I wouldn't have missed the extra salt and sugar had it not been there if you see what I mean!

3. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

We thought the range was very good indeed. Lots of veggie choices which is nice to see! And all of them well thought out and interesting. The flavours were great and we definitely all pushed our taste envelope a bit. For example I don't like beetroot or pumpkin seeds and one dish had them both... I gave it a go and flipping loved it! Will be making that again for sure.

4. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

I can't answer this because there wasn't a vegetarian choice :(

5. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

It meant no trip to Lidl on Sunday afternoon! I always meal plan and shop twice a week (small fridge so can't store enough fresh stuff for once weekly shopping). So this wasn't a huge departure from my usual system of knowing what we'd have when but it was much easier to have someone else do the thinking for me. I blooming hate the weekly "what shall we have for dinner on what night" routine!

6. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

I might. If I was having a busy week work wise or having to rely on DD and DP to cook, or if we were going away self catering then I'd definitely consider it. But weekly it would be too much over my food budget. I think for vegetarians it is quite pricey, maybe it's better value if you'd be buying meat or fish for every meal anyway though. Not sure as I've not eaten either in 30 years!

Backingvocals · 22/10/2017 21:11

Really pleased to have been chosen for this. It was fun and interesting for the children. They are not particularly fussy but sometimes I slave to make something really nice and they won't eat it just because they don't fancy something new that evening. Somehow the novelty of Gousto, the doorstep delivery, all the little packages, and the fact that they were involved in selecting the recipes and cooking them made them much more likely to try things.

In fact they've both discovered new food likes as a result of this experiment. DD has now decided she loves Chinese food - I don't particularly like Chinese takeaway so she'd never had these flavours before and she loved them. I liked the Chinese fish recipe too - not the usual gloopy takeaway. Ditto sweet potato fries. DS loved the Cambodian Curry so is now a curry fan.

1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Website very easy to navigate. We chose Cambodian Chicken Samla Curry, Annabel's Chinese-Style Fish Fillets, Annabel's Mighty Meatball Pasta Bake and Beany Tacos with Sweetcorn and Chorizo.

The recipes were easy to follow. I'm a confident cook so none of it phased me but it was nice to have some new styles to try.

Only one was overcomplicated and that was the Annabel's Mighty Meatball Pasta Bake - loads of steps for what was, in the end, pasta with sauce. I would actually never make my own meatballs since you can buy perfectly decent ones in the supermarket and ones that don't contain unnecessary cheese! Finding myself grating apples in order to make a simple pasta bake was a bit of a bore and the result wasn't great. The meatballs fell apart on frying and the whole thing took far too long.

2. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

Pretty confident. Plenty of fresh veg and lots of very colourful stuff that we wouldn't necessarily have tried otherwise so I think it automatically made us introduce more variety into our diet.

Having said that, I would never put sugar into a savoury recipe - completely unnecessary (the crispy Chinese fish and vegetables one). I left it out - and it was delicious anyway. Also the cornflour - unnecessary. Surprised to find sugar on the list of ingredients. Ditto the cheese in the meatballs - the calorie count on that one was too high for what it was.

3. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

I didn't find loads that I wanted to try - especially since I had to choose at least Annabel Karmel one - but I found enough. And I liked the different styles. I would never have made a Cambodian Chicken Curry without the Gousto prompt.

In order of deliciousness we rated the recipes as follows:
First - Beany tacos. Really good. Spicy. Easy to cook. New flavours for the children to try and easy to make veggie if you omit the chorizo. Will definitely make that one again.

Second - Annabel's Chinese-style fish fillets. We loved the crispy fish. Have never used panko breadcrumbs before and they were a revelation. Children also liked the stir fried vegetables which was a bonus as they got through a lot of veg without noticing.

Third - Cambodian Chicken Samla Curry. This looked beautiful. Colours were lovely and the flavour was good. Another new set of flavours for the children.

Fourth - Annabel's Mighty Meatball Pasta Bake. Took the longest. Was the least inspiring. Just a pasta bake but with a ridiculous amount of calories thanks to the cheese in the meatballs and the cheese on top. Too rich for the children. This could have fed six easily - we had it for two meals much to the children's regret as they really didn't take to it - and even then had to throw some away.

4. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

My children are beyond this stage now and in any case I tend to think it's not necessary to pander to their different palates although I realise I have been lucky in that I don't have fussy children. It might be useful if you do have children who struggle on that front.

As described above, the Chinese fish was a hit, the Mighty Meatballs were a miss. I wouldn't necessarily choose an AK recipe again unless it had something specifically appealing about it other than the "child-friendly" aspect.

5. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

Nice not to think about it at all. I didn't go to the shop all week whereas usually I go every day. I don't usually plan meals in advance - just think of something on the way home from work - and it was nice not to have that burden.

6. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Yes perhaps. Not as a regular thing because it's too much cooking for us. Often dinner in this house will be a boiled egg or humous and pitta bread. I rarely find myself preparing a meal from scratch on a weekday evening and I can't see that changing until life is less hectic. Even with Gousto doing the organising, I just don't want to spend 40 mins when I get home on cooking a meal, not to mention the clearing up which can be extensive with Gousto meals.

However, I would certainly think about it during times when we are at home more - Christmas for example. Or for a holiday let. It also worked well with my new nanny who can cook but wasn't sure what to make. Having these prompts was great.

Other thoughts - I agree that some of the delivered ingredients count as store cupboard basics here (eggs, flour). Might there be an option to tick to say that you don't need these bits? The thought of all the packaging is making me feel a bit jittery. And yes, laminated recipe cards and a folder would be great.

Overall, greatly enjoyed this. Thank you!

My box arrived yesterday and looks great. We've already tried 2 recipes and they were delicious. Will post a full review when we've had all four meals.

I was really happy to have been chosen for this product test as it’s my first one, although I’ve been on MN for years. Sadly, I have been mostly disappointed with the results Sad, but I’m glad to have the experience and it’s always good to try new things. And it won’t put me off applying for other tests.

1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Very easy to order and navigate the website, but struggled a little bit to choose which ones we fancied. The meals were very different to what we are used to eating, but it’s good to have a change. We chose the Easy Lamb Biryani, Chicken Peperonata and Cheesy Potatoes, Annabels Chinese-style Fish Fillets, and Annabel’s Mighty Meatball Pasta Bake. We haven’t yet made the Biryani, as we’ve not had the time, but we have made all the others.

The recipes weren’t difficult to follow, but what looks like an 8 step recipe actually contained multiple steps in each step, so it was quite confusing in places. Plus the timings didn’t always work. For example, the recipe for the Chicken Peperonata and Cheesy Potatoes told me to cook the potatoes, then add the cheese and put back in the oven to finish them off, but if I had done that, they would have been cold by the time the chicken was ready!

The meatballs were tasty, but no need for sugar to be added. Plus the meatballs completely disintegrated, so I recipe somewhat and we had a pasta bolognaise dish instead of the oven baked meatball version. A lot of effort required, even with a 5 year old helping out!

The Chinese fish was ok. A bit bland and the fish needed more seasoning. A bit of salt and pepper just wasn’t enough for the rest of the dish.

The chicken dish was nice, and so far my favourite of the lot. But again, not very special for so much effort. Although it was the easiest dish.

2. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

I actually feel that we feed our family pretty well, considering some of the calorie content in some of these meals! It was good to get some more rounded use of herbs and different vegetables though, as I wouldn’t have bought some of these ingredients before. Too many recipes had unnecessary sugar I felt, so I left this out. I found that there were elements of dishes I will reuse, like rosemary cheesy potatoes and sticky rice.
The quality of the ingredients was very good though.

3. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

I think the choice was pretty limiting really, and at odds to the types of meals that we would usually cook. You only get a certain amount of recipes available at any one time, so if you find one you like, then you can’t reorder it. Given that they are after a subscription service, I think by doing this, they are probably doing themselves out of business eventually, as people will just recreate them at home. Maybe that’s the point, but I’m not really sure what their target market is.

We enjoyed the recipes, although they were a lot of effort compared with what we would normally cook. Neither of us particularly enjoy cooking, so we would normall only spend this amount of time on really special meals, and I was disappointed that the meals weren’t that special for the time they took to prepare. Having said that, they may have taken so long due to the fact that we don’t really enjoy cooking so are less proficient than others that do. We found the timings were out by a good way in some cases (the meatballs especially!). But who has time to strip and chop lots of herbs? Grin They were tasty in the main, but just not what I would call luxury meals.

4. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

I didn’t really find these any different really. I’ve not used Annabel’s recipes before so couldn’t really say what the difference was? The only comment I would make is that meatballs took far too long to make, were a ridiculous amount of calories and portion size for 4 (we got a decent 6 portions out of the recipe), and the meatballs totally fell apart, so it was more of a bolognaise dish.

5. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

It’s an expensive way of doing things, so I wouldn’t recommend to anyone on a budget. All the small ingredients can be bought much cheaper in a bottle, like sesame oil, apple cider vinegar, garlic bulbs etc. I definitely like the idea from a pp who suggested the option to uncheck the ingredients you already have in your store cupboard. And it seemed a bit hit and miss. They didn’t supply plain flour, but did cornflour? Which was odd to me.

I’m not a particular meal planner (much as I wish I was!), but I already shop online for most of my groceries, so that doesn’t really change with Gousto. Cooking is vastly different, as we spend much less time cooking usually. Whilst we don’t typically eat much by way of ready made meals, we use basic ingredients and still make tasty simple meals that take half the time and effort.

6. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

I wouldn’t mainly because of the time to take to prepare the meals. Plus the fact that they have such short dates on them - we received ours on Monday and the latest we could cook was Thursday. Although you can freeze the meat and fish, you would have to find another use for the fresh vegetable and herbs.

However another box has turned up this morning! I need to contact MN as I wasn’t expecting it, haven’t ordered anything, and my subscription should have been cancelled! Given the number of errors of people being charged on the first box, and now this, I wouldn’t trust them to get things right going forward, and it’s just hassle that nobody needs to have to sort errors out.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?
I found it pretty easy to use. The only complication was that the recipes varied depending on delivery date and number of people, so my DH and I were looking at different lists! The recipes were clear and easy to follow (love the photos) though the type font could be larger! I was impressed how similar the meals turned out in comparison to the photos.
  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?
The ingredients were generally high quality and it felt good to be cooking 'from scratch'. The portion sizes were generous and there was enough for my lunch the next day in many cases!
  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?
The number of recipes was about right I think.
  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?
I was looking forward to the Annabel Karmel recipes but we were a bit disappointed with them. The Chinese style fried fish was a bit plain, with veggies in a gloopy sweet and sour sauce. The meatballs and pasta were nice but took a long time to cook and this is a meal we would regularly do at home anyway. For both of them we didn't include the full amount of sugar suggested as it seemed excessive. The fussy eating 5 year old refused the fish and the meatballs, which kind of destroys the point of choosing them!
  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?
Very different - I think it encouraged us eating as a family and eating fresh food. While there was a lot of wrapping for the ingredients, there was not much food waste.
  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?
Yes I think so, my DH loved them in particular (he does most of the cooking).

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Really easy to use - Recipes were easy to follow.

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

The ingredients were all fresh and healthy - similar to what I would buy at the supermarket but obviously more convenient.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?
I really liked the easy Lamb Biriyani. I followed the recipe to the letter and I was surprised at how good it was. When I was making it I was thinking that if I wasn't doing this test I would throw in some garlic, Garam masala, squeeze of lemon juice etc and that I'd have to add some heat for DH and I but I didn't have to change it at all. As per recipe it is delicious! I did chuck some hot sauce and mango chutney on top half way through just to change it up a bit but it honestly didn't need it. The boys loved it too - we're a curry loving family anyway but they wolfed their portions down and then started snaffling after mine! The aubergine parmigiana was good too. I wasn't that impressed with the meatball bake (too sweet), the beany taco's were simple and tasty.

I did think there would be more recipes to choose from but I understand that they change each week so I guess that makes sense.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

I wasn't impressed with the AK recipe I tried. My son's tend to eat quite well so I would always just order what we fancied not anything especially for kids.

  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?
It was convenient to get all the ingredients in the actual portion sizes you needed - I found the portions generous and it was nice to have a solid meal plan for the week. I want to try and meal plan more
  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Yeah I think I would - if I am short on time or as PP have said it would be great for a self catering holiday cottage shop as there would be no waste.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?
Very easy to order. I found I had to do a bit more prep than the recipe suggested. Eg if I had cooked the rice first as suggested then it would have been cold by the time everything else was ready.
  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?
Very confident, lots of vegetables and good quality fish and meat.
  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?
There was enough choice but as I’ve only ordered once not sure how often there are new recipes added.
  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?
I don’t think AK would I influence me too much as my children are older and I associate her with baby food.
  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?
It took all the stress out of meal planning and traipsing round the shops. I found I only nipped to the supermarket for bread and milk so think I saved a bit of money.
  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?
Yes but would possibly only get 2 recipes in one week as I realised that when I cook I often make enough for two nights then maybe have a jacket potato on the third night and cook again on the fourth. I felt some of the recipes were quite time consuming and I like a break from proper cooking every night.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Very easy to use the website. My husband did all the cooking as I had a C Section days before our order arrived, he liked the recipe cards and found them easy to follow.

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

He said that there was sugar in at least one of the recipes which I wouldn’t have added if I had been cooking instead of him. There was a lot less veggies than we would normally have.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

Expected there to be more choice as not everyone enjoys spicy foods. We were happy with the meals that we tried, although the meatballs weren’t as nice as the ones we normally buy that are a mix of pork and beef mince.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

No opinions, we wouldn’t buy a meal just because it had her name on it.

  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

We are not always great at meal planning, and my DH doesn’t usually cook. I had a CSection days before our gousto delivery and it was a godsend as DH was doing all the cooking. It meant we had 4 meals covered in that week and he felt confident because of the recipe cards and said he like the way they were laid out. The portions were massive, we had loads of leftovers which he froze. If he goes to a supermarket he comes back with loads of impulse buys and usually little that can be turned into actual meals, this was easy as it meant no thought was needed, it was just following the instructions. It may be because he doesn’t usually cook but he said that they took longer to make than the recipe cards suggested. He put the herbs into our fridge and they went black, so we improvised with our own ones.

  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

We wouldn’t have them on a weekly basis, but can definitely see them being useful from time to time when life is busy and like other testers I think they would be great if on a self catering holiday where you don’t have a cupboard full of ingredients to fall back on.

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to try the Gousto box.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

I selected 4 recipes no problem but then when DH and kids went online to view the recipes and perhaps make some changes to the ones we had ordered a different selection was available and I found it tricky to get back to the original selections we had made. Being able to search by key words e.g pork, Annabel Karmel would be helpful.

The recipes were very easy to follow. I like it that it shows you a picture of each stage, the amount of ingredients required was clear and the photos of the ingredients are helpful. The timings of the recipes were about right. I enjoyed following the recipe cards and would make some of them again.

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

The Annabel Karmel recipe had a lot of added sugar (2tbsp) which surprised me as Annabel is usually in favour of cutting sugar and making recipes helpful. The bbq sauce also had 2 tbsp of sugar in.
Apart from this I thought the recipes were healthy with plenty of veg.Carbohydrate portions were massive we ended up throwing away half the bulgar rice and normal rice when cooked unfortunately.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?
Good selection of recipes - it was good to be able to search by cooking time. we tried: Annabel Karmel crispy fish - awful sorry! The vietnamese farmed fish had no fish flavour at all and the texture was like cotton wool. Also the concept of using vietnamese bottom feeding fish put me off, and the food miles involved are crazy. The veg would have been nice stir fried in a pan with the garlic and ginger and soy sauce, turning it into a gloopy sauce with lots of sugar and cornflour made it turn from a fresh and tasy dish to a veg dish that lost flavour and tasted of nothing. Really didn't like this dish.

BBQ pork steaks - whole family enjoyed. Quick to make, tasty, great sauce liked the chipotle paste and hendersons ketchup. Enjoyed this way of cooking potatoes. Great meal.

Peri peri chicken - again very tasty, loved the coleslaw too although my kids were less keen on the slaw. a great meal for the family and quick to prepare. Great marinade.

Pork chilli - didn't know you could cook chilli so quick! Tasty, liked the bulgar with it as a change from rice, the cheese was a nice topping, less keen on the slaw on this one.
Overall 3 great meals out of 4. Whole family enjoyed them.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

AK dish was the one we didn't like. I wonder how much input AK actually had into this dish as it seemed the opposite of what AK stands for e.g adding sugar to vegetables?
I associate AK with meals for toddlers and babies so her name isn't an attraction for me as my kids are older.

We didn't choose the other AK meal available which was pasta and meatballs as we have that at home a lot anyway.

  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?
I loved it. There was no thinking about meals, going shopping, planning involved it made life easy. Loved not going to the cupboard and finding myself missing an ingredient - everything we needed was there. DH loves cooking and he said that he was less keen he likes to be more free and easy with ingredients. For me as a less keen cook it was great it freed me up from thinking about what was for dinner - we already knew and we had everything to cook it.
  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?
Yes particularly if I was very busy at work, or wanted to make life easier for a week or was going on a self catering holiday. We all enjoyed the experience (except the AK fish!)

thanks very much

One thing to add sorry - delivery - you choose a delivery day and delivery may be between 8am and 7pm. They can leave the box outside but as we have gates leading to a drive off a main road they'd be leaving the box on the pavement of the main road. Whether it would still be there when we got back is debatable. on the day we were text a one hour slot and we did happen to be in for that one hour slot which was fine. It would be of concern to me if I ordered a box again that I would need to be sure that I was free the entire day on the day of delivery as hte one hour delivery slot cant be confirmed till the actual day. Less of a problem for people who have access to their front door but if you live in a gated area it's more tricky.

  1. How easy did you find Gousto to use? How easy was selecting recipes and placing an order? How easy was it to follow the recipes and create the meals?

Selecting and ordering was very easy - as was changing your mind. The recipes were easy to follow. The only thing I'd change would be to add equipment you need as well as the food ingredients so everything's assembled before you start.

  1. Thinking about the ingredients and recipes, how confident does Gousto make you feel that you're feeding your family well?

TBH there were fewer vegetables than I would normally serve, so really it was less healthy than our normal fare. We tried the AK meatballs, which had apple added to meatballs to increase the fruit/veg content. None of liked that, sweet tasting meatballs are weird! Would have preferred more normal veg e.g. carrot in the tomato sauce.

  1. What did you think about the number of recipes you could choose from? What did you and your family think about the taste of the Gousto meals you tried?

Yes there was a fair choice. Sadly, I thought the AK recipes were the weak point - we liked all the meals apart from hers, where the taste was very odd.

  1. What did you think about the option to order Annabel Karmel's recipes? Is this something you'd like to see continue in the future?

No: the combination of apple in the meatballs and sugar in the tomato sauce was actually revolting. It was the only meal we didn't like.

  1. How did using Gousto differ to how you usually plan, shop for and cook your weekly meals?

I only bought proper meal things for the weekend, otherwise it was just lunch and breakfast food. It did save quite a bit of time and energy.

  1. Would you purchase Gousto meals again for your family?

Possibly, but wouldn't ever choose the Annabel Karmel option.
