This thread is for the 10 Mumsnetters who have been testing the Microsoft Lumia 735, Xbox One Console with Kinect and a Linx tablet.

Here’s what Microsoft’s marketing manager says, “As a marketing manager for Microsoft and mum of 2 boys, I know that things at home and at work can get pretty busy – especially this time of year with present buying, decorating the house, nativity play outfits, pantomimes……you know the rest :-). That is why we wanted to show you the collective power of some of these Microsoft products and how they can be used for the whole family. We would like to find families that can try out a Nokia Lumia phone, XBox One console and one of the new very affordable Linx tablets. All of these work together in a way that your family’s life can be fun and organised, productive and producing lots of laughs.”

Testers:
Once you’ve had the chance to try out all three products, please answer the questions below.

  1. What were your initial impressions and how did you find setting up the devices?
  2. Overall, what do you think of the following products? Do you like them? If so, why? If not, why not?
    a. Microsoft Lumia 735
    b. Xbox One console with Kinect
    c. Linx tablet
  3. Who uses each of the products the most and what do they use them for?
  4. If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend the Microsoft Lumia, Xbox One with Kinect and LInx tablet? If so, why? If not, why not?
  5. Do you have a favourite aspect about any of the products? If so, what is it?

Microsoft would love to have some video clips of your thoughts about the products or seeing them in action. You can use your Microsoft Lumia to film this very easily. If you choose to do this you can upload your clips onto YouTube and please post the link to the film on the thread.

Microsoft has made these products to sync up together allowing a more inclusive experience.

To ensure the Mumsnetters got the most out of the products, Mumsnetters attended an event at Microsoft’s offices in London.
From this event Microsoft would like to know:

  6. Did you find this event useful for outlining the various opportunities offered by the products both as individual devices and collectively? If so, why? If not, why not?
  7. Do you think the products work well together? If so, why? If not, why not?

If you complete your feedback as above you will be able to keep the products you were sent.

    Thanks,
    MNHQ

Cortana understands my voice bettervthan Sri (on my iPad, don't have him on my iphone) EVER did. Maybe its because she's a woman?

I forgot two amazing features:

Firstly, on the phone, the ability to write texts by just dragging your finger over the keyboard, joining letters together to make words. Amazing! So literally placing a finger on the keyboard and dragging from H to E to LL to O and it writes HELLO. and you don't even have to lift your finger off between words. And the emojis are built in too, so if you write LOVE it adds a little heart. Really quick. It reminds me of that game where you make words by connecting letters together with your finger. (name escapes me)

Secondly, the tablet keyboard. You can switch between a normal keyboard (like I'm using now), a two handed keyboard so you can type 'properly' (like I'm using now), or a STYLUS Keyboard where you. write by hand and it Understands' it (like I'm using now). That's pretty impressive.

Third time, I keep typing but manage to come out out screen and as not an app you lose what you've written.

Never mind, getting used to phone and even though we froze the tablet ?? Microsoft sorted it really quickly.

Who has the products?

I have the phone, family the tablet and eldest ds1 xbox ??. No one can believe the generosity of Microsoft!!

Thank you again.

Absolutely, Cortana is brilliant. She understands everything I say, I keep demonstrating to DH, who says, "you are not thinking of converting are you?" ( Mac fanatics to Windows)

I love, love that I can write a text or email by whizzing round the screen,no more fat fingers sending rude or ambiguous messages! That is truly amazing, this just gets better and better!

1)What were your initial impressions and how did you find setting up the devices?

Simple to set up, but I struggled due to syncing if other non Microsoft accounts. Sons managed no trouble at all. Dh doesn't have a Mycroft account and doesn't want one.

2)Overall, what do you think of the following products? Do you like them? If so, why? If not, why not?
a.Microsoft Lumia 735 - to start with didn't like it, as have iPhone, but its growing on me especially this sweeping typing. Don't like the lack of apps, but have iPhone with no sim for them.
b.Xbox One console with Kinect - ds has claimed this and is in love with it
c.Linx tablet - best product especially as we have the 10"one. Both boys are using it, and as I've said its brought ds 1 out of room to sit with us. Ds just asked does it have a pen??

3)Who uses each of the products the most and what do they use them for?

Phone - basically my life is on the phone, think mother ship
Lumia- all of us
X box- boys, but particularly eldest as I didn't want it in living room.

4)If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend the Microsoft Lumia, Xbox One with Kinect and LInx tablet? If so, why? If not, why not?

Hmm hard one, definite yes to tablet and x box but unsure as yet for phone ??, will have to reserve judgement.

5)Do you have a favourite aspect about any of the products? If so, what is it?
Swiping writing, and Cortana ??

One annoying little factor is the usb plug pops into the side of the charging plug, sticking out sideways which means it takes up extra space on a plug bank, so you need to make sure you leave the end socket free or lose a socket. See picture!

So, not to be negative, and I do love everything we have been given, but I had terrible customer service today from the tech support people. I have not been able to get the bt Youview box that we use for tv linked to the Xbox. The lovely people from our event day asked for tech support on my behalf and I was told to contact "live chat" which I did today.

One hour on the computer with a "tech" support person whose command of english was limited, and I am no further. She did nothing except refer back to the same Microsoft help pages that I had already gone through and seemed to have no technical knowledge of her own.

I was really disappointed as I expected someone on the other end of a tech support line to actually be able to help and think outside the box/Manual.

I think the Xbox could be amazing when everything is linked up to make it the home entertainment hub it is designed as, but for us sadly that is it going to happen.

Today DP spent the afternoon setting up the Xbox-with ds' help as he still can't bend, kneel and aches!

First observations- he says it was a ballache to set up, and no way as easy as it looked. Admittedly we have a particular Av set up which has to be done a certain way to get it all to work, but a couple of hours later he had it just about done. We need a USB-USB cable to connect the you view box, which wasn't very obvious. However he liked the sound of the voice control, much to ds' amusement, and is looking forward to the time where he says "kids, dinner; Xbox, listen; Xbox, off"!

The tablet connected to the Xbox easily with the app, and that was very much appreciated.

I can't remember the order of the questions, but in response to the question about recommending any of the products, I met with a friend the other evening, and at her demand took the tablet, as she's thinking about getting a tablet for her girls. Her household is very much apple orientated, so for her to like the lynx is a massive change. DP is impressed with the Lumia, and is looking at getting himself one.

Hi, I've already had one replaced,'twas me on the day as the first one had part of the workings exposed. I hate to say I've gone back to my iPhone as just too many apps missing from Windows store. Seeing as I pretty much manage the house from my phone I just couldn't last. It's a shame as the phone itself is stunning and a dream to use.

Another request, anyone found games on Xbox suitable for younger kids? Have tried Project Spark but it's just a bit much, the driving games are good but v frustrating for them (dd8 played for 15 mins and still didn't complete lap 1). We've got Peggle from Xbox store but this seems to be the best of a rather more grown up bunch.

I showed my techy, Windows-loving brother the tablet sbd xbox yesterday and he was blown away by the tablet. He is an Access developer and said having the entire Windiws Office suite on a tablet would be HEAVEN for him. When I told him affordable the tablet is, he was really shocked and happy!

We also played the xbox in peace as the kids were out ????. I tried using the headset - amazing! Talking to other gamers was so much fun, and everyone was nice which I think shows that the new Reputation system is working. One gamer had a crying baby in the background - I hope that wasn't one of our MN testers..!

Smart glass is still working very well. It freaked DP out when I changed the channel stealthily. Lol.

I'm writing this on my Lumia and its really such a lovely phone to use. Fits in my hand perfectly and feels sturdier than my iphone even though its not any heavier.

Plus I've noticed I'm pleased to be seen using this phone (I know how shallow that is!).

Also. Watching the Apple documentary has made me feel a bit guilty for only buying apple without thinking how they're made. I have a clearer conscience using this!

1)What were your initial impressions and how did you find setting up the devices?

Initial impressions were good! For set up of the phone and the tablet, I was able to this with DS on my own (which is saying something given my technical abilities!) It was really straightforward but perhaps helped by the fact that I had an existing Microsoft email address so was able to log in straight away. I also had a Lumia phone before my current one so logging in downloaded most of my contacts. Relatively quickly after opening the boxes, we had the phone and tablet charged and ready for action.
I left the Xbox one set up to DH as I was a little more nervous on this one. His comments were that it was straightforward to set up. Good to have an HDMI cable in the box so again, soon after opening the box the whole system was set up and good to use. Initial impressions were that it was a sleek unit, looked good and we liked the newer subtle Xbox logo (totally shallow point but still….)
There were no problems getting the Xbox live account up and running and getting old accounts transferred across from the Xbox 360.
I was impressed with the ease of getting the TV control, V+ control setup.

2)Overall, what do you think of the following products? Do you like them? If so, why? If not, why not?

a.Microsoft Lumia 735
As I said above, I had the Lumia before my current iPhone.
I’m impressed with the improved camera and the selfie camera is a nice touch. I love the ability to drag my finger over letters for texting and I’m surprised at how accurate it is at picking up the words.
I’m still trying to get to grips with Cortana, it feels a little gimmicky and I can’t see it revolutionising my life or being a feature I’ll use on a regular basis. It’s worth noting I’ve never found the value add in Siri either. When I have tried it, Cortana consistently doesn’t pick up my words accurately though this may be an accent thing which is probably why I lose interest in it quickly (clearly I need to keep trying ?)
The apps - there is enough to keep anyone going but it feels like you may have to compromise and there just isn’t buy in from enough external app developers, it seems third in line to apple and android. This was one of the reasons I moved away from Lumia before.
In general, it’s a lovely bright screen, nice shape and clear to use, touch is responsive. Like the sharp contrast to the dark black background.

b.Xbox One console with Kinect
We have been impressed with the big improvements over the 360 Kinect. This feels like it has a much higher level of integration and the camera sensitivity is much improved. An example of this would be when the TV was on through the Xbox and when I walked in the room it said “hello MSTester” as it matched me to my profile. The control in the games and menus seems a lot sharper as well.
We were initially impressed at being able to route our V+ box through the Xbox and could see lots of benefits with the control all being linked together (smartglass on the Linx to select programmes and change channel, information about which programmes are trending etc.) In reality, we don’t always want the Xbox on just to watch TV, although fine for me or DH it’s too tricky for DD aged 5 to navigate and we’re disappointed that there is no HDMI pass through to let us do this.
Still we have found it easier to switch between different profiles and it is mostly intuitive to use, though we’re still working out the best (quickest?) way to make the Snap features work.

c.Linx tablet
We really like the feel of the tablet, it’s lightweight and the soft rubber backing feels nice to use and hold. It feels more expensive than we know it is. The screen, again, is lovely and bright, clear to use and navigate and feels really familiar due to similarity to the Lumia phone.
It’s good having all the Microsoft office applications as standard and it feels and seems like a more productive tool than the iPad. However, the menus, on anything other than the start page, appear to be designed for a stylus rather than a finger as you need quite a precise touch to select. We think it will be optimum with a stylus or a mouse plugged in.

3)Who uses each of the products the most and what do they use them for?
a.Microsoft Lumia 735 – me, though DS has been using it lots too and is making a bid for it!
b.Xbox One console with Kinect – everyone! My favourite game is the Kinect Sports because we can all play it together. DS is a real fan of the Zoo Tycoon and both he and DD have spent time playing this together, which has been great.
c.Linx tablet – Whoever gets there first but mostly DH and I. We’ve been using it for Christmas shopping, making lists (and sharing them) and trying to get to grips with One Note. I’m really keen to explore whether this is an application that I can use at work to get more organised.

4)If it came up in conversation, do you think you would recommend the Microsoft Lumia, Xbox One with Kinect and LInx tablet? If so, why? If not, why not?
Already, we’ve found ourselves discussing the products, particularly the Linx, with family and friends. There is some interest in it and what it can do, particularly given its cost. There is also a lot of interest in the Xbox One and DH has been discussing this with his colleagues at work.
I / We would definitely recommend the Linx and the Xbox. We’d also recommend the Kinect upgrade, despite DH previously questioning whether it was worth it. We think it is. On the phone, however, the jury is still out. This is less to do with the phone itself than the apps available.

5)Do you have a favourite aspect about any of the products? If so, what is it?
It’s probably the overall shared feel across the devices. Being able to use one login and transfer information between devices. We can see the potential to coordinate our lives using these.

Some more feedback from my son.....

  1. I would recommend the devices to specific groups of people. I would recommend the phone and tablet to previous windows users, and to people who have used Androids before. For those people it’s very easy to get started: you feel right at home when using it, especially the tablet. I would not recommend them to Apple users however, as they’re very different, and these people would probably find them quite difficult to use.

The Xbox One has elements that appeal to different people. While the family-friendly game that the system does have are good, there are not many of them: you could almost count them on your hands! In that respect, it’s better for “hardcore gamers” as there are more games for that audience. However, the other features it has: Skype, Live TV, movies, SmartGlass and more are suited well to families, as they are the people who are likely to use these aspects.

  1. My favourite aspect of the tablet is the interface, which is very easy and intuitive to use. My favourite part of the Xbox One is the graphics, which are very powerful, and provides quite an immersive experience. Finally, my favourite part of the phone is, similarly to the tablet, the start menu. This makes it incredibly simple to access my favourite apps and functions quickly and easily.

I showed my brother the Linx tablet today, and he was drooling. He's a computer nerd, trains and works with Access all the time. He said the ability to have Office on a tablet would be wonderful for him. He said he'd work fewer hours with this tablet, not have to stay late at work, etc. When I told him this was actually an affordable tablet, his eyes LIT up. He'd assumed it'd be an iPad type price.

He set up Office on it for me (to be honest, I don't think I'd have been able to do That myself). Its great now - I have Word on my tablet!

We also got a full afternoon on the Xbox today without the kids. :) The voice software is great but it infinitely preferred my brother's voice to mine or dp's, which had us in stitches. The virgin box runs perfectly through the Xbox even though we've got an obscure, crappy Techika TV from Tesco. We can control everything.

I also tried out the headset (included in the box) when gaming today. That was such fun. Really brought an extra dimension to playing online. Everyone was friendly too, which might be because of the new ''reputation" system Xbox has introduced to keep the idiots out of games. The hours just flew by and I was gutted to have to turn it off to go out!
