This is the thread for the lucky MNers and bloggers who attended an event at a Farrow & Ball showroom to find out all about colour in the home and who have then been sent paint and product from Farrow & Ball to decorate a room at home.

Non testers - for a chance to win 10 litres of either Modern Emulsion or Estate Emulsion paint from Farrow & Ball (colour of your choosing) please share on this thread the room in your house you'd most like to decorate - what colour scheme you'd use and why you want to decorate it. Add your comment to this thread by Monday 26th January and you'll be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win 10 litres of either Modern Emulsion or Estate Emulsion paint from Farrow & Ball (worth up to c£144, depending on what's chosen).

At the event there was a special inspirational colour talk from their International Colour Consultant Joa Studholme - she also gave MNers and bloggers advice on schemes and colours.

Participants - please answer the following questions.

At the event:
a) How informative/inspirational did you find the initial colour talk with Joa and the rest of the F&B team?
b) Please share the most interesting piece of colour advice or decorating tip you learnt on the day?
c) What did you find the most interesting aspect of our colour talk?
d) How do you think we could improve our colour talk event? (Please consider the venue, refreshments, structure etc?)

Now on the colour advice / selecting a colour scheme
a) Where do you normally go to find inspiration when deciding on a colour scheme for your chosen room/s? (Please think about Farrow & Ball websites, social media, magazines, websites showroom staff etc?)
b) Which source do you normally find the most inspirational and which is no good! Would you like more places to get inspiration and what form would they take?

F&B products
Which room(s) did you decorate?
a) Please describe your experience of using Farrow & Ball paints to decorate your room from first opening the tin, to completing the project and seeing the results?
~ think about ease of application, product quality, depth of colour and finish etc...
b) After your experience would you consider using Farrow & Ball paint in your home again? If so, why? If not, why not?
c) Now that you?ve used Farrow & Ball paint, how likely would you be to recommend it to a friend? And why?

Any other comments?

Please do also share your photos on this thread!

Thanks
MNHQ

We've just bought a house that needs completely redecorating so I spend my life surrounded by paint charts at the moment!

I'm planning to use London Stone again, and Blackened as we have had great success with them in the past.

My new bedroom has pink walls and carpet at the moment, we can't afford the change the carpet so I need to find a colour that will live with the pink for now!

Regressionconfession · 15/01/2015 11:05

I would love to be entered into the prize draw. We've just moved into a huge edwardian house and all the rooms need decorating (it was last decorated in the 70s so looking very dated)!!!

We've used farrow and ball in the past and plan to use it on this project too. I've already got lots of tester pots.

The first room we plan on decorating is DD. I'm planning on creating a calm space with subtle(ish) pops of colour inspired by Scandinavian fabrics. At the moment I think I'd like to use blackened on the walls. We've used it in the past and I love it. And then something a bit more adventurous on the window frame - yellow cake could be fun and would also work with the coloured glass in window.

NowThenMardyBum · 15/01/2015 12:05

Non tester here. The room i would most like to decorate next is our bedroom. We have just finished DD's room in calamine and the nursery in green ground for dc2 due in a couple of weeks. The hall, stairs and landing is freshly painted in elephants breath and our main living area/ kitchen is ball green. We are huge f&b fans in this house! The plan for our magnolia bedroom is borrowed light as it is south facing and always hot!

duplodancer · 15/01/2015 12:24

Non tester here. The room I'd most like to decorate is our kitchen as it's desperately in need of it!

We moved two years ago and the house is in quite a bad state decoratively but with two tinies and a very limited budget we've only managed the hall, living room and playroom so far. Grin

I would like to paint the walls lime white and the woodwork in old white as we've done this in our sitting room.

diamondsrock · 15/01/2015 12:43

Love seeing these transformed rooms on this thread! I'd really love to decorate our hallway. It was the one room we didn't paint at all when we moved in, as the colour was bearable and we wanted to focus on doing the main rooms. Two years on, it's the scruffiest looking bit of the house, and all the scuffed bits which we ignored initially are starting to grate. I would keep the colour the same white, but perhaps a warmer shade and paint the woodwork in a slightly darker grey.

Kitsmummy · 15/01/2015 13:09

I'd most like to paint DD's room, it's a small but pretty room with sloping ceiling and wooden floors and at the moment is partial bare plaster where we took a bit off the adjacent room to make it bigger. I would use Calamine on the walls with poss down pipe on the skirting and door frames.

Blackeyez09 · 15/01/2015 13:10

Hi
All I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to refresh my hallway thanks to farrow and ball yay!
It's a narrow but high ceiling victorian hallway.
I am currently having it replastered/ skimmed (by my partner) and I have completely stripped back all paint of stairway and bannister and have stained the treads dark brown, the risers and bannisters and skirting will be wimbourne white, ceiling will be wimbourne white, walls will be strong white above dado ( which we will be fitting) and elephants breath below.
Will be kitting out hallway with runner, new light fittings, sash window will be renovated.
I'm really looking forward to doing this thanks so much to mumsnet and f & b...
Here are some before pic

I love the f&b website and have numerous sample pots at home as really need to redecorate.

One room in particular is our dining room - it is west facing so a lot of light in the afternoon evening. We live in a Victorian flat so high ceilings and two large sash windows.

The dining room currently is painted red but I would prefer a much lighter colour. As our family has grown, we use the room for different purposes (play and dining) so it needs a real lift. Plus a lot of furniture in there so looking for a cleaner look. The red walls are broken up by windows, the fireplace and book cases etc that it doesn't really feel right. A lighter colour would definitely help.

We've got two doors in the room so feels like a corridor. My aim would be to paint one of the doors to match the walls, so it blends in better. (Again this is the problem with a red wall and white doors - looks silly as one door is next to the fireplace)

For colours, I'd like a warm white or grey perhaps. I'm not an expert in colours at all but like the look of slipper satin on the website. For the woodwork, I'd keep it a clean white, same for the ceilings. Light fittings - a nice big possibility multi bulb type fitting (a modern chandelier) plus some smaller lamps.

We eat in this room every day and I'm aching to sort it out!

Non tester:

I'd like to paint my spare room, in different shades of pale rose pink. The rest of the house is almost done, apart from the spare room, which is going to be my "I-was-never-allowed-a-pink-room-as-a-child" homage.

Think cream bed linen, cream roses, shimmering rose gauze-silk fluttering at the windows and the palelest seashell pink walls...

Nanasueathome · 15/01/2015 15:17

Non tester here and would love, love to be entered intone prize draw
House is 1950's semi
I want to decorate every room jn the house but the starting point would be main bedroom
Wallpaper already stripped off and waiting for plasterer to come and skim over the walls in preparation for painting
Has been a long slog as am on my own and have to make all decisions and plans myself, not always easy
New bed linen purchased which is red and cream stripes and so would want creamy colours in the walls with perhaps kne feature wall, behind the bed
Have looked at paints from other companies but have to say that the Farrow and Ball ones are the most appealing to me and the ines I am planning to use
Please enter me in the prize draw, and wish me luck

We have many rooms needing decorated, but the one I would most like to do is what will be the study/spare room. I would love it to be a warm, comforting space, with a terracotta colour scheme. A bit 90s I know, but it would really suit the room.

mrscumberbatch · 15/01/2015 18:09

Non-tester.
We moved into a new build house so everything is garish white at the moment. It's very bland and dull.

Would love to do our bedroom (and possibly the guest room) in nice minky, grey tones.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 15/01/2015 18:11

I'd do our kitchen, which is looking a bit grubby and gloomy. I'd like it to be a lovely pale yellow.

MrsJamin · 15/01/2015 18:14

(nontester) The room we need to paint is our kitchen diner when the extension is finished - the challenge will be how to choose paints that complement each other but designate the different areas. I'd like a deep dusky blue in the kitchen and a lighter colour in the dining room but that hasn't been approved by DH! A lovely paint to persuade him would be very welcome.

LizLemon · 15/01/2015 18:23

(nontester)

we are five months into the most stressful house sale/purchase ever, but if we ever do manage to move in, we'll need to paint everywhere, because the entire house is painted White. Yes, with a capital W.

I'll start with the open plan living room though, because I will need a cosy place to retreat to after the inevitable unending days of unpacking boxes. I'd like to use warm greys & whites, as I tend to scatter colour through furnishings & rugs, and change it seasonally, and have a grey sofa.

OldLadyWhoLivesInAShoe · 15/01/2015 18:27

Non tester here but would like to decorate our hall way, it's been eight years and its a disgrace.

High ceilings in a Victorian house with dado rail, from above advice I would do this the same colour as the bottom of the wall which is purbeck stone and then above in corn forth white. Ceiling and skirting boards in Wimborne white but would love to get some advice so would visit the local shop.

vic1981 · 15/01/2015 18:58

Non tester here. I would love to paint my bedroom using the shade borrowed light. We have recently moved house and would love to put a stamp on my room- at the moment it is a bog standard white as chosen by the previous owner....

flamingtoaster · 15/01/2015 19:15

Non-tester. I want to paint our lounge. The decoration is long overdue and it is still the cream colour they were when we moved in and this has darkened over time. I want to make the walls lighter for a more "airy" atmosphere - perhaps Off-White, Matchstick or Clunch.

peach78 · 15/01/2015 19:16

We decorated our house about 2 years ago when I was expecting our youngest. My mum helped us massively with painting and decorating. So the room or area I'd like to decorate most would be my mums hall and landing.

It's been about 15 years since it was last painted so it's looking quite tired. Over the years she's tried a couple of paint testers on the walls with the intention of decorating but has never got round to it and ended up with a patchwork effect!

It would be such a lovely surprise her.

sliceofsoup · 15/01/2015 19:32

Non tester.

I am hoping to re decorate our bedroom soon. I want to have a purple/silver/white colour scheme as I think that would look great and be really cosy for a bedroom. I think one wall a deep purple and the other walls a very pale grey colour would be really nice with some new white furniture and purple and silver accessories.

When we moved into this (rented) house it was completely magnolia-fied by the LL as the previous tenants smoked. We have been here two years now and we love it here, so now I feel settled enough to start making a mark on the place. LL doesn't care as long as it looks decent, so thats great.

Have loved reading all the feedback and seeing the photos!

sliceofsoup · 15/01/2015 19:38

But now that I have looked up your colour chart I am imagining all sorts of combinations. GAH.

My bedroom badly needs redecorating and I would love to paint it a duck egg blue colour. I think it's such a pretty colour and so many colours go with it

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 15/01/2015 20:35

Non participant here. I'd love to repaint my living room a strong, warn yellow. It is a big, bright room so could carry the colour, maybe Sudbury Yellow. I had thought to do the paintwork bright white, but having read the tips on this thread I'd consider going for another colour, probably a dark taupe.

HangingInAGruffaloStance · 15/01/2015 20:37

Oops, should also have said why I want to decorate. Because it is dull and depressing with heat marks above the radiators!
