BEAR Alphabites Feedback Thread - £150 John Lewis voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

AngelieMumsnet · 11/09/2014 11:54

This thread is for the Mumsnetters who have been trying BEAR Alphabites.

Here’s what BEAR say: “Grrreetings, we’re BEAR and we like things as nature intended. We started out 5 years ago making pure fruit ‘yoyos’ for kids, with no added sugar, concentrates or any other nonsense. The more time we spent talking to parents over the years, the more we realised that breakfast was also a real challenge for families- the sugary, salty cereals on offer made us growl, so we set off foraging to find a much better alternative.

Made from just 6 ingredients- five multigrains and our super new ingredient coconut blossom nectar - our crunchy cereal letters contain no refined sugar, salt or any other nonsense. From the flowers of the coconut tree, coconut blossom nectar is a naturally sweet sap that makes our cereal letters delicious and crunchy, and also provides over half of your daily calcium needs (one bowl of Alphabites with 125ml of semi skimmed milk provides over half of an adult’s daily calcium needs, with half of this coming from the nectar alone). It also has a much lower GI than sugar (35 vs 70 for refined sugar), preventing the usual crazy sugar highs and grizzly crashes that come from too much refined sugar. ”

Below are a few questions for you to answer about eating BEAR Alphabites at breakfast time – feel free to add any other thoughts you may have though, we’d love to hear them.

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

If you have any photos of your DCs trying BEAR Alphabites, please add them to this thread. Thanks for taking part:

All testers who leave their feedback on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 John Lewis voucher and a hamper of delicious BEAR goodies.

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Still no sign of mine Sad

Michelle1985 · 15/09/2014 16:33

Well the BEAR Alphabites have gone down a treat!!!!! My children have eaten the two boxes over the weekend and want MORE!

In answer to your questions:

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

Two of my children will eat ANYTHING, however, my middle daughter has always been fussy with breakfast/anything with milk on. She won't usually have anything other than fruit or toast (I'm not grumbling at that btw!), cereals are usually a no-go for her.

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

With the exception of my daughter, my other DC's regularly have cereal or musli. I am concerned about the sugar and salt intake of my children but probably not as much as I should be,however, I do believe the more natural the ingredients, the better start to the day! All that said shredded wheat and weetabix are usually a hit in our house.

  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

The DCs LOVE Bear Alphabites! From the box for delivery, through to the taste in the bowl, they were a HUGE hit all around! The packaging is extremely child friendly, the concept is fantastic for concerned mums like myself and finally your cereal managed to get my daughter to enjoy cereal with milk!

  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

Yes

  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, boxed cereal may not be a hit with all Mums, but its great to have this choice on the shelves!

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 15/09/2014 16:43

Nothing here either. Would we have been notified that we were chosen? Was only 90 something on the thread...

onestepbeyond · 15/09/2014 17:05

lookslike I was notified by pm and email but nothing has arrived.

Lookslikeimstuckhere · 15/09/2014 17:13

Ah ok, no notification so obviously not good enough to taste test!! Confused Thanks onestep!

bluebump · 15/09/2014 17:20

Well the postman and my DS (5) were really impressed with the box they came in, the magnets were a great added extra too!

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
My only real challenge is that my DS is such a slow eater with cereal not just on school days, weekends too that I end up rushing him to finish.
  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
My DS will generally always ask for cereal and in particular, chocolate pillows, spooky hoops etc but he does like porridge too. I do sometimes worry about the amount of sugar in his cereal but he has a pretty balanced diet otherwise so if it means he eats a meal without leaving anything I usually let him have those types of cereal.
  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They were a big hit in our household, I thought my DS would only like the cocoa ones but he liked both. He liked spotting letters and has already asked for some dry in a bowl after school for a snack...I suspect this is to spell stuff! The packaging is great, he is desperate to be able to cut out the spy card on one. The package they came in the post in is now his new craft box apparently too. The only complaint my DS had was that the letters were quite small, he said they'd be easier to eat if they were bigger.
  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
Yes absolutely, it's great to have found an alternative to such sugary cereals on offer.
  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would recommend them. Thanks for letting us try them.
thethirteenthcoming · 15/09/2014 18:15

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
My DD loves her breakfast. Usually porridge of wheetabix, which have a lower sugar content. I was surprised to see how much sugar these cereals have and, although branded as naturally occurring sugars, the levels are still very high, especially when compared with wheetabix.

I am worried about 'hidden' sugars in food, although I do not have issues with my DD having sweets/ treats as I know how much she eats.
The packaging looks great and the magnets were a real hit, especially as we have just started reception. I loved the fact that they do not go soggy that quickly and my DD loves the idea of letter eating. She also loved the monsters - B is her favourite.
The price is high and I would buy them on offer, as I do with all the cereals. It is a brand I trust.

PlushSuppie · 15/09/2014 18:34

Just collected the fab box from the post office, didn't realise we were getting two boxes, nice surprise.
Will feedback in the next couple of days.

BabyBellasMumma · 15/09/2014 19:29
  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

Not really a challenge, both DC tend to wake up hungry and ready to eat straight away. They are always happy to sit at the table and generally eat a good breakfast.

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

Mine dont often eat cereal, its normally toast, porridge, weetabix, pancakes with fruit. They occasionally eat cheerios.

  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They both really liked them. They were too excited by the box they came in to wait until the next morning to try them so they had some as an after school snack. They have then had them every morning since! DD said they were 'yummy!', she is 4yo and said she likes the plain ones best. DS is 20mo and he likes the cocoa ones best. DD spent a long time looking at the boxes, it kept her busy for a while at least. DC dont really understand the concept but i like them Smile

  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

i will 100% be buying them again, spotted them in my local Tesco yesterday so DC have already found where to get them from!

  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes i would recommend them, its a healthy breakfast that children enjoy so cant go wrong really!

Scraggyspanner · 15/09/2014 20:30

We were very excited to receive our Bear Alphabites.

Here's our review...

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

My LO is only ten months old, and breakfast is probably our most successful meal of the days due to a couple of favourites, so not really a challenge at the moment, no.

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

Yes, I'm very concerned about the amount of sugar especially, and salt to a lesser degree, in the foods I feed my son. To date, we haven't offered him any foods which involve refined sugars at all.
We normally have porridge or homemade pancakes or sugar free breakfast muffins, or Ellas's kitchen hoops cereal if we need a quick cereal.

  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

The cereal went down well, so although my son couldn't tell me what he thought, I would certainly guess that he liked them. I can see them being useful as a snack as well as for breakfast.
I liked the packaging, and the alphabet concept. I can certainly see lots of potential for that in the coming years.
I taste tested the cereals too (parent's prerogative, surely!) and liked them too. My only reservation is how sweet the taste was. In line with my concern about refined sugars, I am also keen not to introduce my son to overly sweet foods at an early age. With the current concerns about sugars being linked to the obesity epidemic, I am keen to teach my son that overly sweet/sugary foods are not something that form a regular part of our diets.

  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

Yes, as a treat.

  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes.

Didyouevah · 15/09/2014 20:41

Hi - many thanks for the opportunity to try Alphabites. It's been a complete success. Box arrived on Friday and my 4yo son was at home. The packaging was really funky. He recognised the bear from the YoYos. When his sister got in from school (6yo) they begged to try them as an afternoon snack. My son ate 2 bowls! One of each. They've had them for breakfast each day over the weekend too. This morning they had breakfast club so didn't eat at home.

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

Yes - it's a meal with time constraints. Also limited choice. I can spend an hour preparing dinner but would never do that with breakfast, so we're left with something processed most of the time. I think my children get bored with the limited options too.

What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

My daughter will eat plain yoghurt and honey, my son will eat toast. Both of them have cereal, (cheerios/porridge), but it's very 'samey'. Very occasionally I will buy them nestle variety packs just as a change; also to motivate them to eat in the morning. Yes definitely worry about sugar; not so much about salt. Also bread is too processed really!

What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They loved them. I couldn't believe how much they enjoyed them. They loved the taste, and the fact they could spell words. I was a bit worried they didn't stay crispy for long, but my children didn't seem to notice.

The packaging was great; they also really enjoyed the magnets.

We didn't discuss the fact there wasn't sugar in them - I don't think they'd see this as a concern.

Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

Yes - definitely. I shop at Aldi and actually this is a product (along with Heinz tomato ketchup) that I would make an effort to purchase at another shop.

Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes - definitely. What's not to like? The funny thing was I looked for the list of ingredients. I turned the box over and over looking for a list before realising it was there in picture form! Lovely. I am so pleased we can finally strike refined sugar at breakfast off the long list of parenting crimes I regularly commit! I will definitely encourage them as a snack too.

I would love to see these in travel/snack packs to have either dry or with milk.

Thanks again for this - we're definite converts! Smile

UserNameAngst · 15/09/2014 21:09

Thank you for letting us try the Alphabites. DS1 (4) was really excited as he loves YoYos.

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

Both kids eat well at breakfast, especially DS2 (2). Getting them to eat it at the same time is the only tricky bit.

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

I do worry about cereals having too much sugar. Our breakfast staples are weetabix (favoured by both), porridge, rice crispies, cornflakes or cheerios (which I try to limit). Also toast. DS2 has an especially sweet tooth and still asks for Frosties after having had them a couple of times elsewhere.

  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

I'm afraid neither of them really liked either of the flavours which I was really surprised about. DS1 was very keen on the fact they were letters and liked the packaging. I know you didn't ask what I thought about the packaging but I wasn't keen on reading out loud about blood before I'd finished my breakfast. I did get them to try them on a couple of occasions in case it was the pressure of being testers but the verdict was no, sorry. I tried a few spoons and wasn't keen but I'm not wild on cereal anyway.

  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

Not unless they ask for them in the future to try again. They are quite expensive but if they had liked them I would definitely have added them to the rotation (was hoping to replace cheerios with them).

  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

I've given both boxes away to different friends to try; they seem more healthy than normal cereals so I guess it just comes down to personal taste.

Tidypidy · 15/09/2014 21:11

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

DCs generally good with breakfast, they like cereal or toast or sometimes scrambled eggs and bacon. At weekends we often have a grill up for a treat and they all love black pudding!

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

They usually have toast with Clover and jam, marmite or honey. They also like cereals, usually Sainsburys own shreddies or cheerios. I do worry about refined sugar and excessive salt in their diet so choose plainer cereals.

  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

They loved the packaging, though I had to explain why the bear had a fig leaf and what it might be covering! They like both flavours but preferred the cocoa best. They enjoyed finding letters in their names, DH and I enjoyed making rude words with the letters!

  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

I may buy the cocoa flavour for a treat occasionally, perhaps when on holiday as we tend to have different things when away.

  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend them to friends with small children as they are a good alternative to the usual wheetabix and porridge.

Thank you for including us in this test, we have all enjoyed it.

dublinmary · 15/09/2014 21:20
  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
DS (8) eats a huge bowl of cereal, usually Shreddies, every day. It is the one meal he will finish usually. DD (4) eats like a horse after 9am, but has never eaten much breakfast, which will be a problem when she starts school at the end of this month, as there won't be an opportunity for snacks at 9am. That's why I wanted to try these, she has no interest in most other healthy (ish) cereals. We don't buy coco pops or the really sugary ones, although I know that Shreddies aren't that great!
  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
Cereal as I said above. I do worry about the sugar and salt, but that is counterbalanced by the fact that DS eats very little at school and I would rather he went with a full stomach.
  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They both liked them, especially the chocolate ones ("super delicious"). DS reverted to his usual breakfast the next day, but DD is showing signs of enjoying the regular Alphabites. She likes playing with the letters. She likes the monsters on the fridge magnets.
  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
I would, although they are expensive. I would only buy the regular ones though, I don't want a precedent of chocolate cereals!
  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would because of the taste and that one breakfast refusing child is prepared to eat them! Although they are relatively healthy, I do think that Coconut Nectar is still a form of sugar. A tiny internet search did raise some doubts about whether it is any more than a marginal improvement on regular sugar - perhaps you could find some space on the package for some more information and evidence about the benefits of Coconut sugar?

Many thanks for the opportunity - the DC were most excited to be involved!

fourthandfinal · 15/09/2014 21:22

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
Breakfast is only a challenge because they insist on chatting and taking their time when we need to HURRY UP and get out of the house (or get up half an hour earlier but I think that would be more challenging than persuading them to eat at a speedier rate than one mouthful every five minutes)!!

  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
We have a selection of cereals (all non sugary - weetabix, malties, crisps, fruit & fibre, cornflakes) and sometimes toast or pancakes. I'm not so worried about the sugar/ salt but I do think there's a lot of white carbs in what they consume which I would rather avoid but can't think how to without starting cooking a whole other meal which would be excessive! At the weekend, we quite often make porridge.
  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They were very excited to try them, particularly the chocolate ones. DCs 1&2 had lots of fun picking out the right letters to spell their names and various other rude words! DC1 (7) loved them, especially the cocoa ones, and was very engrossed in the packaging on the back. DC2 (5) liked the chocolate ones without milk for a bit but then declared that she was "not really very keen on them" but, this morning, still wanted a bowl of dry chocolate ones - mainly, I think, to be able to spell her name rather than eat. DC3 (18months) was pretty impressed, but he's very chilled and laid back, and was found climbing a chair to get the box which he then proceeded to tip on the table & floor and munch as a mid morning snack.... If I can work out how to load a photo of him doing this, I will. I enjoyed them for a small bowl (same with DH) but we both agreed they were rather too sweet tasting for us and we wouldn't want more than a small bowl every now and then.
  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
I think that's pretty expensive, especially considering that I didn't find them that filling. Additionally, as I buy own brand cereals mostly, there's quite a big price difference.
  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I wouldn't recommend them, but I wouldn't not recommend them. They were OK and while DC1 enjoyed, DC2 didn't really and I try quite hard to not have things that only one eats.
fourthandfinal · 15/09/2014 21:29

DC3 having climbed on a chair to reach the box then tipped them on the floor & table for a mid morning snack... sigh!

BEAR Alphabites Feedback Thread - £150 John Lewis voucher to be won NOW CLOSED
edwardcullensotherwoman · 15/09/2014 21:39

Ours came last week, DD(2.3) was very excited, she was carrying the boxes around for over an hour! So far she's been eating the chocolate ones, DS not keen but he will try the multigrain ones when I open them.

  • Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
Not generally, other than worrying about them eating the same thing every day. I like to have a variety so they have a choice and don't get bored.
  • What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
Our usual cereal cupboard contents are sugar puffs, cheerios, shreddies and rice krispies. I know some of these are quite sugary but as they don't eat the same one every day, and it's only a small bowl I'm not overly concerned. It is nice to think that what they're eating is good for them though, and I like them to eat wholegrain cereals as much as possible.
  • What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They loved the packaging, it's very child friendly - bright and funky. So far only DD has eaten them and she loved them, ate every last one. They love the idea of them being letters, it adds a bit of fun to breakfast to look for different letters.
  • Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
Yes I would buy them on occasion (usually buy own brands so they;re a bit more expensive than our usual choices).
  • Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Definitely - especially if they are struggling with getting the children to eat cereal. The packaging and alphabet concept are great for kids.

I will be back with more feedback on the multigrain ones soon (I may even give them a try myself!)

falgelednl · 15/09/2014 21:43

Thanks for sending the Alphabites for us all to try - we were really excited about collecting the box from the sorting office! DD2 has especially loved the magnets which now adorn our fridge and are regularly moved around.

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?

Not especially as we employ a nanny and, if the children have not eaten breakfast before I leave for work then she sorts it! However, it does get to a stage when there seems to be so much choice - toast, bagel, cereal(s), fruit - that the children go through phases and I end up eating whatever they are now bored with. Often all three DC want something different too...

What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?

DD1 (8) tends to eat a wholemeal bagel most mornings (or most of a wholemeal bagel) with butter (or sometimes with plain Philly); DD2 (5)umms and aahs and opts for toast with butter, or weetabix, or cheerios; DS (1) tends to have a banana and will then eat a weetabix of dry cheerios (and shares with the floor most days!)

What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?

The biggest thing was that they wall wanted to try them and were eating the same thing for breakfast. I thought they would prefer the chocolate ones but is is the plain ones that have gone first. DD1 likes them both - I think especially because she finds them quite sweet compared to the usual offerings so she thinks she is having a treat for breakfast! DD2 likes the plain but especially loves that they are letters - she probably plays with them as much as she eats them! She doesn't like the chocolate ones 'they taste of pretend chocolate' she says. DS two tends to take a handful whenever he can get close enough to either box - but still wants a banana too! Could they be made in banana flavour?
They loved the box - the big one and the cereal ones. They like the bear.
DD2 loves the magnets. I didn't mention there was no sugar in them - they still don't really know that you could add sugar to cereal!

Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?

Yes - my children like them and the box (plain ones first) was emptied instead of being left half-emptied in the cupboard when they have moved on to a preference for something else. I would really like it if they came in those mini-box sizes for snacks, especially for DS.

Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes - and if they came in mini-box sized I would love to let my children have them as an after-school snack which would make them so happy as they moan about the fruit-only rule so this would be a win-win situation!

Thank you!

fourmonthstogo · 15/09/2014 21:47

- Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
I find it a bit of a challenge to encourage her to have healthy options, or to have something when we are in a rush to get DD to nursery or childminder. She often ends up eating in the car.

- What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
She has a wide range of things, boiled egg and soilders, toast (often with ketchup on) chocolate cereal at the childminders, bacon muffin given half a chance, dry weatabix and often pastries on a saturday.

I don't worry too much about refined salt and sugar in a cereal as she doesn't actually eat much cereal - it must be better than some of her choices anyway!

- What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
She loved the letters, got very excited when they came pouring out the box and she spotted the letter for her name, our cat's initial and M and D. She did think that the name was silly, but being 3 she didn't quite get the play on words. I would say she thought the chocolate ones were ok, and ate about half the bowl so clearly didn't love them. Try as I might I can't get her to try the plain ones though.

- Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
Probably not, because as I say she doesn't each much cereal. This price I would be happy to pay though if the situation changes.

I would like to say thank you for the opportunity to test them - I am going to keep trying them on her!

- Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
I might mention them in passing but as DD hasn't been won over I am unlikely to recommend as such.

IneedAwittierNickname · 15/09/2014 23:07

Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
Breakfast is only a challenge because I'm fussy about what the children are allowed to eat. So chocolate/sugar coated cereals are only for weekends and holidays

What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
Ready break, shreddies or weetabix (all stores own brand) or toast with butter (jam or chocolate spread at weekends)
The sugar content does worry me and I hope that the choices I have are the lowest sugar content.

What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
They loved the packaging, especially all the facts and things on the back of the boxes.
So far they have only eaten them dry as a snack but they liked them. I tried the cocoa ones and found them very sweet.

We will try them with milk in the morning and see if they go soggy (a pet hate here)

Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
I might buy them as a treat but my right budget means I couldn't afford them all the time.

Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I would recommend them. Especially to a friend I have whose ds has a sugar allergy :)

Pickofthepops · 15/09/2014 23:14

Coming back to add feedback specifically about the cocoa variety which both Ds and dh love. ' not too heavy, great flavour' is the verdict. Would definitely buy this Smile

SaltySeaBird · 15/09/2014 23:14

Ooh gutted not to be chosen for this, I've got a feeling my DD would love them (it combines her two favourite things in life, cereals and bears!). Looks like I'll have to splash out - she normally just gets the cheap stuff from Aldi!

Stealthpolarbear · 15/09/2014 23:31

Thanks for picking us

I have ds aged 7 and dd aged 5. The minute I took them out of the box ds recognised them and started telling me about the TV advert - the bear tried to write with his paw, the pen slipped, he tried with his grisly snout and it tickled him he sneezed, the books went flying and that's how the cereal was made. Or something.
They liked the bear magnets and I suggested making their names. Swapping ensued.

Chocolate ones:
Dd tried some dry and said they were "yummy summy grumpy grump hee"
She then swapped so ds could have an s

Ds pointed out that we could use them on the top of cupcakes to write "love from

Ds said they were "yum" (after prompting)
Dd said they were "good"

Ds spotted they had no sugar or salt. I asked what he thought. "Good"
"Why?"
"Sugar is bad for your teeth" (dd)
I asked if they tasted good - yes

Then ds picked up on "no added nonsense" so we discussed what the nonsense could be. I said it meant all natural ingredients. Ds pointed out there were no wasps in the cereal.

They then realised there were NO TOYS in the box but were placated with the games etc on the back.

Ds on finishing said they were LOVELY and gave 10/10. Dd suggested they were grrrrreat.
Ds then tried the multigrain which he said were also lovely and also gave 10/10. Dd was full

I asked ds which he preferred and he said both, he'd have a mixture of both in future.

Biggest victory - on Sundays they're allowed whatever crap cereal they like, coco pops etc. they both asked for these!

I spotted the mail address which pleased me - as a child I loved that sort of thing. I thought the grrrrreat etc made me think of Tony the Tiger.

And that's it :)

Thank you for giving us the chance to try the Alphabites - my children (and my husband lol) were very excited when the package arrived!

- Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
My children are always very enthusiastic about breakfast and its the first thing on their mind when they wake up. However my DS (3) is fussy and will only eat certain cereals (shreddies, weetabix and cornflakes mainly).

- What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
Shreddies, porridge, weetabix and cornflakes (and coco pops). My DD loves coco pops and its often a battle to persuade her to pick something else (I wouldn't buy them at all but my husband is slightly addicted to them I think!).

- What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
Both children loved the boxes and recognised the bear from the fruit YoYo's (a firm favourite in our house). My DS ate a bowl of the multigrain ones but the next day when I asked him if he wanted it for breakfast he said no and chose cornflakes instead. He wouldn't try the cocoa ones (he will only eat plain cereals). My DD on the other hand, loved them (both boxes) and actually chose them over the coco pops (big thumbs up from me). She had them with milk and also dry as a snack.

- Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
I'd be more inclined to buy them if they were on offer (say £2 a box). However, I think I would buy the cocoa ones for my daughter as a healthier alternative to coco pops

- Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes, I've already mentioned to my SIL (also got little fans of the fruit YoYo's in her house)

Thanks so much for choosing us to trip the bear alphabites, here is our feedback
Do you find breakfast with your DCs to be a challenge, or not? If you do, could you tell us a bit more about why?
Breakfast time is fine with my daughter as she loves cereal, toast and eggs for breakfast,.so no problem in breakfast time.

What do your DCs usually eat at breakfast? Are you worried about the refined sugar and salt that most breakfast cereals contain, or not?
she has rice krispies and some fruit and fibre ones with raisins and she does not like the chocopops or any other chocolate cereal. I'm worried about the salt and sugar content, but we try to east toast and sandwich for breakfast so its like three days cereal and other four days with bread toast or scrambled egg, or omelette, banana...

What did your DCs think of Bear Alphabites (taste, packaging, concept)? What did they like or dislike about them?
she like the multigrains alphabites over the chocflavor as she is not a big fan for chocolate cereal, and she finished the bowl in a flash, she liked the packaging very much and there is nothing to dislike.

Would you buy Bear Alphabites for your DCs in the future? (available in 375g box, RRP £2.69)?
yes and If the alphabites are in offer 3 for 2 or 2 for 4pounds Wink

Would you recommend Bear Alphabites to friends or relatives? If so, why? If not, why not?
yes i would recommend to friends and family, the cereal is really good, multigrain, and no nasty ingredients added is additional bonus Smile
