This is the feedback thread for the 50 Mumsnetters who tried Fitbug Orb.

Here’s what Fitbug say: “The system sets you personal targets each week for steps and food, helping you improve your lifestyle at a rate you can gradually adjust to, so it’s not a hardcore exercise regime or a diet that you do for a short time, but a way of improving your habits for the long term."

Testers: We’d like you to post on this thread twice. First with your initial impressions, and then a couple weeks later letting us know how you got on. Please answer the questions below but feel free to add any other thoughts you may have.

First impressions:

Q1. Why did you want to take part in this product test?
Q2. What were your first impressions of the Fitbug Orb when you opened it? Did you like the look of it? If so, why? If not, why not?

Non-testers: What’s the easiest form of exercise that you manage to squeeze into a regular day? Do you have any tips to fit exercise easily into your day to share with other Mumsnetters? Maybe it’s taking the stairs to your office on the top floor of the building, or walking your children to school each day. Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it.

Everyone who adds their thoughts to this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a pair of Fitbug Orbs (worth £50 each).

Thanks,

MNHQ

Tester

So far it's nothing more than a glorified pedometer, I haven't used any of the functions that you need the website for. It's very odd that the app is purely for looking at your stats, seems a wasted opportunity to me.

scousadelic · 03/09/2014 21:46

I agree heymammy. I am going away next week and will not be taking my laptop, just using my phone so I will be unable to enter anything

drinkyourmilk · 03/09/2014 22:14

I made a mistake my first week and made a real effort to do 10,000 steps a day (not easy when you work 12 hour shifts!). My targets have been set to do 12,000 a day and its unachievable most days- so im never meeting my target. I feel quite demotivated.

I wanted to update with my progress.

Sadly I have stopped using the fit bug orb. This is for a number of reasons:

  1. I used it on the strap as I thought it looked quite good - however the orb slipped out quite easily so I felt it wasn't very secure

  2. My steps always came out as ridiculously higher than using my standard pedometer. I did a test where I was in the house, not doing much and the fit bug recorded over a 1000 steps in an hour, whereas my pedometer recorded around 200 which seemed much more accurate. I have tried numerous times adjusting the stride, but after doing that about 8 times I thought why am I bothering when I have a pedometer already.

  3. I was really interested in the sleep monitoring. It seemed to be incredibly difficult to set the sleep mode and often I was left with a green light glowing beside me as I tried to get to sleep - then the darn thing wouldn't record. On the rare occasion I did get it to log sleep it was telling me 95-98% sleep quality which seemed a bit unlikely.

  4. I couldn't get it to sync with My Fitness pal for the calorie recording - this is probably because I was using DH's i-pad, but tbh if I wanted to record calories on MFP I would, not sure that there was any added benefit to recording them through the fit bug orb.

  5. I was checking my stats on a number of devices and had to log out and in each time, which was a pain.

Another slightly irritating thing is the number of e-mails I'm getting from fit-but. I haven't read any of them as the sheer volume is off putting.I thought the whole point of the fit bug was that it was an app based tracker - couldn't they put the messages there.

So I'm really sorry - I thought the price was good and the product looks pretty smart ( apart from the slipping out orb) but it seems like there needs to be a lot of work put in to make it an effective device. It reminds me very much of my first generation kindle.

Thank you so much though to fit bug and to mumsnet for having a trial of the product - it was great to have the chance to test.

Mumsnet - I'm not using mine any more so if anyone in the Edinburgh area would like to collect it for their use, they are very welcome.

affafantoosh · 05/09/2014 07:58

Had anyone else noticed that "quick add" doesn't seem to work for activity? And it doesn't offer you recent options, which is annoying when you only do one kind of exercise regularly. Also, I've forgotten to put it on occasionally and it would be nice if it have the option to manually add walking just to try and keep track.

My clip has also broken - the rubber on the clip part has ripped so it won't clip firmly to a belt or bra. It's a shame as now I have wear it in my pocket (can't wear it on wrist in case it gets wet at work) :(

BeCool · 05/09/2014 09:54

working FT, with 2 young DC and being a SP I really struggle to fit any exercise into my day at all.

I'm hoping our local park will have an outdoor gym soon and I can squeeze in a little work out while the DC are having a play.

Moogdroog · 05/09/2014 13:30

Non tester - I'd like to say that The Shred is easy to fit into my day, but even at 20 mins it's hard to manage. My best approach is doing stuff with the kids, like going for a walk - though at 3 and 5 their pace doesn't exactly brake a sweat!

pigsinmud · 05/09/2014 13:31

Non tester - easiest exercise for me to squeeze into my day is walking the dog. Good for body and soul! She always needs a walk so even if I don't feel like moving about, I have to!

Tester....
Quick update... Will log properly when I get chance to use a PC instead of a phone.... And try to post screen shots

After just over 2 weeks, my overall impression of the orb is positive, but the app and website needs a bit of work to make this more user friendly and appealing ...

As a pedometer the orb seems to work fairly reliably, and I've tracked sleep all but one night where i didn't get any results.... The sleep tracker works on movement so it doesn't register you're awake unless you toss and turn.... So all the times my DH woke me by snoring like a walrus and moving around didn't register.... It can be like sleeping on a trampoline with a hippo at times Wink

As I mostly use the app or mobile web site i haven't managed to get the food tracker working at all.... It doesn't seem to work from a mobile....

Targets.... I made a serious mistake of my 1st week being an active holiday week with loads of running and walking... My targets are now extremely challenging so I don't hit them very often but they still increased this week....

More feedback later....

Tester follow up post. I am not convinced by the orb. It doesn't do anything that you can't do with a cheap pedometer and my fitness pal. The interface is hard to use I.e. You can only download from orb to phone when I have a wifi signal. This means I can't do it at work to see how my steps are getting on and if I need to move more in the afternoon. The sleep tracking is inaccurate as many people have said. I often find it has recorded 80 or so steps begone I even got out of bed. When I put it in sleep mode the 5 green flashes are very bright and actually woke up DH on one occasion. I have to say I am disappointed, the software is years behind its rivals and I have used a fitbit so have experience of this. I have pretty much stopped using it as it feels like a hassle rather than a beneficial aid.

YeGodsAndLittleFishes · 08/09/2014 10:31

Follow up post. I am hugely disappointed that the time and effort I have put into trailing the Orb has had either no effect or a negative effect on how often I go out for a run and also whether i eat healthily. I dislike that any information on my personal account is available for anyone else to see. I hate that the only way I can get the orb to work as a pedometer is on my wrist, as then it looks like an ill fitting tagging device and gives me a rash.

I had to use My Fitness Pal to track calories ingested for the app to do anything, and even that just made a line for each day change colour (or not). I can continue to work this out in my head and actually I would prefer to be using my brain to decide whether I need to eat/exercise more or less. I don't need a device like this.

The packaging is the only good thing about it, and that might well lead people to think it does more than a pedometer. For £50 I certainly expect more than this, and I will not be wasting any more time money or thought on anything like this again.

redandyellowbits · 08/09/2014 11:05

Sorry this is so late, I thought I had posted this earlier but evidently not. I have been using the Fitbug for a few weeks now.
First impressions:

Q1. Why did you want to take part in this product test?
I am always looking for new ways to motivate myself into keeping fit. I am not naturally a sporty or active person, but I do need to exercise to keep my weight down and to fell generally good about myself.

Q2. What were your first impressions of the Fitbug Orb when you opened it? Did you like the look of it? If so, why? If not, why not?
The Fitbug looked excellent, I was very, very pleased. I had the black orb with the link stripe, which is very discreet. I would have been unhappy with the white one as it's so bright and would attract attention.
I wore it using the wrist strap to being with, but DCs were completely fascinated by it and were constantly wanting to wear it, so I switched to wearing it on my bra strap using the clip. This is perfect for me - very discreet and I can't feel it at all, so I am not bothered or irritated by it.

Now, a few weeks on, I still haven't used all of the fitbug features, or set up everything I need to. The instructions list set with the product was very, very poor, with a long list of URLs copied and pasted from their website. I think this is a terrible way of showing instructions, and requires access to a PC to set up which is a real pain. I would much, much prefer a booklet with all instructions inside, with clear pictures too, as I'd be much more likely to set this up in bed with written instructions. For a paid for product this is very very poor quality.

I did access the website to enter my initial information, I felt the homepage interface is way too cluttered with anything and everything thrown in in terms of health advice. It doesn't seem to support any particular training philosophy or USP for FitBug, and feels more like a group of copy writers have sat down and thrown lots of diet and fitness articles onto the screen rather than guiding the user through the attainment and attainment of a healthy lifestyle. I find the blog style articles particularly irritating - they are very waffly, and are one persons take on things, rather than an informed scientific opinion or Fitbug philosophy. I did try to upload my food intake onto the site - I found the food list was very generic, eg, if I ate a packet of crisps these show as a generic 'plain crisps (or similar)', whereas, having been on weightwatchers previously I know that the fat content of crisps varies enormously by brand.

Consequently I haven't ventured further in and find the site difficult and unenjoyable to use. I think there is also too much reliance on the website - generally I would prefer the orb plus all of the info on the app, rather than logging in. The tips that are sent to me via email are quite nice to get, but I don't want to deal with the device, app, website and emails, the messages should instead appear straight to the app, and also should not request logging in, or clicking on a link for more info - all of this makes it more work for the user, which is irritating.

I have downloaded the app - this is really clean looking, and intuitive to work with. I expected to be able to upload my nutritional intake here, eg with a database of foods, but am surprised you can't do this. Instead I have been addicted to the pedometer feature and have been using this daily to track my steps. This has been really, really motivating for me, esp seeing the aerobic steps completed and the weekly. The key with the coloured buttons showing targets met/exceeded etc is very unclear, but I generally ignore this.

I expect that the Fitbug does a lot more than I an currently using it for, but I don't find the information easy to get to - it takes a concerted effort to set up and use, which is not the case for other cheaper/free products. Fitbug developers should look at the MapMyRun app, or My Fitness Pal app for examples of great health and diet apps, available for free.

As it is I will continue to use the FitBug Orb as a pedometer as I think it's great, very user friendly and motivational, but probably not bother with the other features. I am not sure of the pricing structure of this ((is there an ongoing subscrioton fee after the initial outlay?), but I would not be happy to pay £50 for this, or any ongoing subscription fee, when there are cheaper pedometers and free apps available online.

FPATEL · 09/09/2014 20:07

Tester

I am enjoying using the Fitbug, it is getting me on a mission to meet my aerobic steps target as I can now clearly see how less active I was. I just wish I could have my control over entering information via the app rather than having to use the laptop each time I want to enter something

ineedausername · 09/09/2014 20:15

Non-Tester:
I fit in my exercise by making sure i put on my running clothes first thing, then as son as i drop the kids off i can just go for a run. If i need to get changed, drive somewhere it'l never happen!

Bubbles85 · 10/09/2014 07:23

Non tester

I don't have much free time so just end up going for long walks with LO in pushchair and the occasional evening jogging when my DH is happy to stay at home with the baby

redandyellowbits · 10/09/2014 10:02

Tester - the Fitbug is definitely motivating me to walk more - I was at 7,000 steps last night and went for a quick walk to get to 10,000, which I never would have done previously. After a week of hitting 10.000 I am starting to feel healthier, although sadly not much weight loss as yet.

It would be very helpful to be able to log in weight with decimal values in the app - at the moment I input in kilos and I'm now 68.5, which I can't input accurately unless I go to the website.

autumnboys · 10/09/2014 10:07

I get up early before DH leaves for work, or I schedule to go out while he's doing something at home - so tonight and and Ds1 have a guitar lesson. I know he'll be home for that, so I am meeting my c25k friend. If I'm going out in the evening, I get into exercise clothes when I get home - if I wait until DH gets home, it feels like too much effort.

Ladyboluna · 10/09/2014 10:30

Non-tester.

I like to hula-hoop. It fits easily under the stairs and I can do 15 mins in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening (that's my goal at the moment at least). OH thinks I look a little strange but there we go! It didn't cost me much, only about £10, but be careful as some online can cost as much as £30 for adults! Any hula hoop is fine. It's good for general exercise and weight-loss as well as toning up your stomach, hips and bum.

laurapotz · 10/09/2014 16:25

I find the easiest way to exercise is lots of walking with the pushchair. AS long as I am outdoors and there is plenty to look at my little girl is happy. I have also started fitting in some weights three times a week. I have some dumbells at home so it only takes me a few minutes to do a quick workout.

boptanana · 10/09/2014 22:02

Non tester. I take stairs instead of escalators, carry a basket not wheel a small trolley and wall whenever I get the chance!

i go for a walk around my estate everyday and do gardening bits by bits

itsmecathy · 11/09/2014 19:56

Non tester- I walk DD to school every day (also saves money on petrol!) .

  • Park at the back of the car park so have to walk further!
  • 30 minute shred whilst i'm waiting for the tea to cook!
xxxkadzxxx · 12/09/2014 00:10

I have a puppy so i am now walking twice a day with her after the school run and once i have picked the children up from school and obviously it goes without saying running after her numerous times throughout the day!! I have noticed the puppy tends to play up more after a walk than when she doesn't have one so i figured she wasn't getting warn out enough therefore i have not started to jog with her... not very well but i am a little bit (for a few seconds at a time ;))
I have also brought myself a few exercise DVD's. The intention is there, it has been for a while but i just need to motivate myself to put them on which i WILL do next week!
I run up the stairs instead of walking and walk to the shops instead of taking the car etc, just little things like that.
