This thread is for the Flora panel members participating in the Flora Buttery baking task.

Here's what Flora have to say, "Flora Buttery is brilliant for baking the fluffiest of cakes, and it’s super easy to mix too, even straight from the fridge. We love to use it for icing, as well as in the cake mix (we have loads of great recipes on our website), and it’s a great all-rounder, perfect for everything from spreading on your sandwiches to melting on your spuds. We’d love you to make space for a tub in your fridge and see how versatile it is!"

Panel members were given a voucher to buy Flora Buttery.

Please answer the questions below and add any other comments you may also have. We'd love you to take a picture of your creation and post it on this thread. Please note any pictures and/or comments on this thread may be used by on Flora's pages on MN and possibly elsewhere so please only post if you're happy with this.

  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

All panel members who post on this thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £200 John Lewis voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

MNHQ

What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
I made some simple sponge buns with the dc, with icing and sprinkles.

How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
I was really pleased with them. They tasted nice and the dc loved them.

Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes, maybe. Generally I would refer to use real butter but I have to admit that using Flora Buttery was so much quicker because it was soft enough to use straight away. I would definitely consider using it for baking with the kids as it meant they didn't have to wait for me to soften the butter which usually ends up with me melting it. It certainly made the baking faster. As for the price, we bought it on offer at £1 so about half the price we normally pay for the same quantity of butter, so I'd look out for it being on offer (would be great for baking for school fairs and keeping the cost down). One thing that would put me off is that we generally shop at Aldi and they didn't seem to have it stocked so I'd probably have to make a special effort to buy it.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
Yes, I'd recommend it for baking with the kids.

I was going to ask my daughter to make chocolate brownies using the Flora Buttery - she makes THE best brownies in the world. However, she had just decided to give up chocolate for a month Shock so she made some flapjacks which mysteriously disappeared overnight while she had a couple of friends here for a sleepover. She also made rice krispie cakes - both were just as good as they would have been had we used butter. She also made fairy cakes for when I had a friend over for a cuppa - friend declared them MORE buttery than if butter had been used!
Yes, I would use again and I would recommend.
Used the last bit of the tub for the DC's packed lunch sandwiches - much easier than butter.
Sorry no pic - I could post a photo of some crumbs.....Wink

Just remembered that there were some fairy cakes & Rice Krispie cakes in the cupboard. There's one less Rice Krispie cake now.....

  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
Blueberry Muffins
  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
Probably seemed a bit moister
  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Happy with what I use already so depends on the price comparison
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
As a spread it tasted more fatty and greasy than butter but the flavour was okay. It's fine in baking and I would never have thought to use it for that so maybe for ease being that it's nice and soft to work with.

hi mn when is this closing?

Mouseface · 17/03/2014 22:43

Hello!

What did you bake using Flora Buttery?

  • My voucher finally arrived so we made some fairy cakes at the weekend, (sorry - can't upload a photo as my camera is poorly :( ) but we did a batch with Stork and a batch with Flora Buttery.

How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?

*I did a blind tasting test and the Flora Buttery cake won hands down! :) The cakes were lighter, fluffier and softer in the middle, much nicer taste.

Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?

I don't like it on toast, we are usually a Clover family but I found the Flora was greasy, and had an odd aftertaste when on toast. I would certainly bake with it again though but that's all I would use it for.

If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

*For baking, then yes, because it has no aftertaste when used like that, I'd highly recommend it. But for eating on toast, or as a spread on scones, nope. I found it had a strange aftertaste. It was also runny and rather greasy actually.

Overall. for baking it's a yes but for other uses like spreading on toast, or on crackers or scones etc, I wouldn't use it. I'd rather use butter or Clover :)

Thank you though for letting me be a tester, it was great fun for my little man! :)

SORRY this has taken so long to get back to! I completely forgot about it! The picture isn't the best quality, but I hope it'll do!

I love Flora Buttery because of how soft and buttery it is! It tastes great and really is versatile and can be used with anything! I love how easy it is to spread on my morning toast and how quickly it melts. I also love how it makes my mashed potato taste! I mash my potatoes with a bit of milk, butter and a dash of pepper (if we have some) and Flora Buttery gave it a lovely buttery, smooth texture and taste.

We also made flap jacks using Flora Buttery! The end result was a much more softer, smoother, tastier treat!

I will definitely be using Flora Buttery again as I prefer the softer texture when it comes to spreading on toast and sandwiches and spreading on crumpets and tea cakes!

If it came up in conversation, I would recommend people try it out because of the taste and texture. It is a product that if it's in the shop and on offer, I do favour it over other butters or margarines, because of soft it is.

We made lemon drizzle cake,it was very moist.
Not sure if I would buy again if it wasn't on special offer.
Would be happy to reccomend to others .

Kendodd · 20/03/2014 14:29

Finally got my voucher, will do some baking at the weekend.

  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
I baked some icecream cupcakes, I used flora for the batter and the buttercream
  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
I did not find any major difference, only that Flora is much softer than butter
  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes, I am thinking about it, as it tastes nice and it is easy to work with
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
I am not sure the subject would come up in a conversation, but if it did, then I would recommend it as it is a very good product

Thanks again for letting us try it.

My 3 year old and I baked flapjacks and butterfly cakes using Flora Buttery. They both came out fine and tasted the same as if we'd used butter. I liked that it was easy to use straight from the fridge, and I would recommend it for that perspective, but I would rather use normal butter in general.

lemony7 · 24/03/2014 22:27
  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
Banana bread
  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
About the same to be honest
  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
I would, but only if I had it. I wouldn't go out to specifically buy it JUST for baking.
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
Probably not. It's another spread; it doesn't do anything different to the spread I usually use and it costs more.
boptanana · 26/03/2014 23:02

I finally got my voucher but I'm surprised I did as the address was really muddled, the first line repeated 4 times with a postcode ! Here's my review

  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?
I baked train biscuits with my daughter
  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?
They were delicious, no different to normal results
  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?
Yes as I liked the ease of using it straight from the fridge
  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?
Yes if it came up as I was pleased with the results.

We've made two batches of fairy cakes (chocolate and vanilla) and the taste was much better than with the fork biscuits we'd originally made. Like the biscuits the mixture looked a little greasier than usual but the texture was really light and there was no funny aftertaste.

I wouldn't replace butter with Flora Buttery for recipes where the butter is a key component of the flavour such as shortbread style biscuits or buttercream but would use it again for making cakes, especially if toddlers are helping.

DebbieWobbs · 29/03/2014 11:51

We made some cookies with our Flora Buttery. The recipe said to use butter but I used my Flora Buttery instead. The results were the same as I usually get when I make them with butter and I'd use it again as it's both healthier and cheaper than using butter. I'd recommend to friends and relatives to give it a try - I already have done. No photo I'm afraid - the cookies didn't last long enough with my children and their friends!

Nigglenaggle · 30/03/2014 19:03

OK blind taste test fail on toast, but unmelted I think its pretty damn close to butter. DH remains to be convinced, but I am working on him for the health benefits

AreYouBlueOrAreYouBlind · 31/03/2014 13:49
  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?

We made cupcakes, St Patricks day style.

  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?

The sponge was just as tasty as when we use regular butter.

  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?

I might use it again, the obvious benefits are that it is lower in fat and a good price. I bake lots and do have to watch my weight.

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

My MIL and I are always swapping baking tips, she uses butter and sometimes Stork, I told her about the trial and she is going to try it too, so word of mouth has been successful on this occasion. :)

Thank you for the opportunity to trial this. I can't upload photos from this device but will try from my phone, they were no works of art, and were very green, delicious though!

mjmooseface · 31/03/2014 17:18

Just scrolling through this thread with all the pictures has got me all hungry for cake!!! lol It looks like flap jacks were quite the popular thing to make, too! Did anyone use their Flora Buttery for any non-baking items such as sandwiches or toast, crumpets etc?!

McMardyBum · 01/04/2014 09:03

Just found this thread- I never received my flora voucher Sad - was really looking forwards to eating the results of testing too.

Nouseforausername · 01/04/2014 21:59

mjm my OH has had ours on toast and crumpets and loves it!

mjmooseface · 02/04/2014 17:13

Nouseforausername I really liked having it on toast with marmite!

candyflosscloud · 02/05/2014 11:45

I thought I already posted in here but can't find my post how strange!

  • What did you bake using Flora Buttery?

Me and my son baked flower pot cupcakes!

  • How did the end result compare to what you usually use to bake with?

to be honest I tasted no difference which is a good thing!

  • Would you be likely to use Flora Buttery to bake with again in the future or not? If so, why? If not why not?

If I had it in the house already and wanted to bake then I would but I doubt I would have the spread in my house unless the butter was on offer.

  • If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Flora Buttery to a friend or relative? If so why? If not, why not?

yes
