A couple of weeks ago Knorr challenged 30 Mumsnetters to take part in the Stock Pot Leftover Challenge and test Knorr products with their leftovers. This thread is for the 30 testers to share their feedback on the challenge, and for non-testers to share their experiences with Knorr & leftovers.

Here?s what Knorr have to say, ?As part of our partnership with Love Food Hate Waste, we?re committed to helping people get the most from their food, reducing the amount that goes to waste and saving them money at the same time. Christmas dinner is almost guaranteed to leave us all with lots of leftovers in the fridge, so we?re really excited to see how Mumsnetters use Knorr to give their Christmas leftovers a new lease of life.?

Non-testers: How are you using your Christmas leftovers this year? Are you churning out the good old turkey sandwiches or have you been more inventive? Have you used Stock Pots or Gravy Pots before when preparing meals with your leftovers? Whatever you?re doing with your leftovers, let us know!

Everyone who shares their thoughts will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a Knorr hamper (worth £50).

Testers: We?ve got a set of questions we?d like you to answer about using Knorr stock pots with your Christmas leftovers. Please feel free to add any other comments you may have.

  1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?
  2. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?
  3. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?
  4. Do you think you?ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?
  5. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Everyone who adds their feedback will be entered into a prize draw to win a £150 M&S voucher.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

Non-tester here.

With the remains of the leftovers, I made a turkey and leek pie and a Christmas dinner pie, inspired by something that Paul Hollywood made on the Christmas Bake Off special, with layers of each component in pastry. I haven't eaten it yet, so I'll see if it works!

Wickeddevil · 02/01/2014 21:48

Made yummy parsnip soup yesterday using a chicken stock pot thingy; Parsnips, carrot, onion, garlic, ginger.

I dont actually like roasted parsnips, (do them for DH and MIL but they make lovely soup....

CloserLook · 03/01/2014 13:39

Non-tester here.

We used up our main leftovers on Boxing Day just doing a chunky bubble and squeak style meal with roasties, parsnips, stuffing, sprouts. We just did some fresh gravy and yorkshire puddings to go with it.

I have used Knorr stock pots before for making gravy and they were absolutely fine but not so good that I've felt inspired to buy them again.

CMOTDibbler · 03/01/2014 17:44

Non tester. We've been pretty good with not having huge amounts of leftovers this year.

Ds likes leftover meat shredded into a stock/miso base with udon or rice noodles and some assorted veg.

Knorr - could you make your products gluten free please? DH bought some gravy pots thinking they'd be great, but I can't eat them Sad

Farrowandbawlbauls · 03/01/2014 17:48

I add it to rice while it's boiling, it gives it a lot of flavouring and makes plain old rice more exciting.

  1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?
The vegetable stock because it was the most versatile
  1. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?

Ham pot pie with left over leeks bread sauce mustard and of course ham using the veg stock.

Turkey and Chorizo casserole with the chicken stock and the chicken gravy gels

Turkey Madras

Beef Stew with left over Rib of Beef and it was gorgeous

Tomato and Vegetable soups

  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes it gave me plenty of options and I liked the recipe cards

  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?

Definitely they give me plenty of options and are actually great value for money and not too salty

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes for sure please see above

WheresTheCoffee · 05/01/2014 07:17

Non tester, we didn't have a great deal left this year. Traditionally, we use what's left of christmas dinner on Boxing Day with a scaled down version of the big day dinner!

mrscog · 05/01/2014 09:09

Sorry a bit late to the party but we've been busy using up leftovers/creating meals :)

1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why? I think the chicken stockpots are probably my favorite, closely followed by the beef ones. I just love the really chickeny, deep flavour of the chicken ones - you really don't need 'real' stock if you've got one of those.

2. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers? Well firstly not leftovers, but we made a venison casserole for Boxing Day which we used a beef stock pot for, then with leftover chicken we used a chicken stock pot as a base for a New Year chicken and cashew nut dish. We used a vegetable stock pot as a base for a soup using up all the left over christmas day veg and a gravy pot in a turkey pie!

  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not? To be honest no, as I always use up leftovers anyway, but having the stock pots in did make it easier to get started and more exciting as a project - I would definitely get some 'in stock' (geddit ;) ) again!
  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes, I have been very impressed.
  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not? Yes I would, because I've been very impressed with the depth of flavour and easiness of adding lots of flavour.
jennywren123 · 05/01/2014 16:36

Non tester. Five portions of turkey curry in the freezer here!

breatheslowly · 05/01/2014 20:27

Non-tester - I've just used a stock pot for the first time in bolgnese. It seems to have added extra depth. I didn't add any salt and it doesn't taste too salty.

TESTER

  1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?

I liked the chicken stock pots the best, they had a much better flavour and colour than the cubes I usually use

  1. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?

I made a turkey, ham and leek pie using xmas leftovers and chicken stock pots, I also made a chicken and pasta dish that I would usually use stock cubes but used a stock pot and have used gravy pots for mince and tatties.

  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would have tried to use the left overs but the stock pots made me make the effort to actually do it.

  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yeah I will probably will use Knorr products as they were easy to use and tasted good.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I would recommend them as they are easy to use and tastier than stock cubes although a bit more pricey.

Tester

1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?

I actually really liked the beef gravy. I made a beef wellington for Christmas dinner and it was a lovely flavour.

2. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?

My leftovers were from my sunday roast chicken dinner. I made chicken and pea risotto for dinner the following day. it was lovely.
I have also used the stock pots to make a chicken noodle soup for lunch today (it was delicious).

3. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes, because it helped me a bit more creative with what I have, rather than just chucking it in the bin....

4. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?

Defintely. I know it has come up quite a lot about the salt content, but I didnt find them salty at all (I never put salt in my food), and they did have quite a pleasant flavour.

5. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. I have found it more economical making my own soups etc but I have never tried making my own stock (I never seem to have the time), and have always been a bit 'meh' about ready made stock so I feel I am definitely getting more out of my food now.

Natrob199 · 06/01/2014 15:54

Non tester: My husband made savoury Chelsea buns with the left over Turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce. They were delicious and a welcome change to turkey curry! Loved by kids and adults alike.

JS06 · 06/01/2014 17:56

Turkey used up with long slivers of mango, some coriander, a quick squirt of mango chutney and a bit of mayo. All wrapped up in a tortilla for a hearty lunch.

FadBook · 06/01/2014 19:52

Tester here:

1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?

Beef stock - very rich in flavour.

2. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?

We actually didn't have many left overs, too many hungry people in our house Grin. However, I'd brought too many onions which needed eating, so I made French Onion soup with two stock pots.

I also made a chicken hot pot in the slow cooker which was tasty and hearty, only taking me 5 minutes to bung in the slow cooker.

The Gravy pots I've struggled with. I found the gravy too thin for our family; tastier and smooth but measurement of stock pot and water, meant my DP moaned his gravy wasn't think enough! I added extra granules which defeated the point of using them.

3. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?

They didn't minimise waste for me, and my family as we don't throw food away, we'd reheat as it is or we wouldn't make too much in the first place.

The Stock pots are more convenient than a stock cube.

4. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?

As per previous question and answer, I'll use them again but not necessarily with left overs. They would be used instead of a stock cube.

5. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

Yes. The taste of the overall meal was nicer in comparison to a stock cube or no stock at all.

They are extremely easy to use and far less faffing about breaking a cube up / boiling water etc. to make your desired dish.

KeemaNaanAndCurryOn · 06/01/2014 20:20
  1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?

The vegetable stock pot was brilliant. We have a few recipes that use a lot of rice and using the veg stock gave it a much richer flavour than before.

  1. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?

I used the chicken stock pot to make a soup by shredding left over turkey and simmering with fresh ginger, spring onions and chilli with a touch of chinese 5 spice.
The veg stock pot made a leek and mushroom risotto - not left overs, but we'd had enough of xmas food.
We've used the gravy pots to go with meat and roasts and they are lovely.

  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?

I used them with regular dishes we do to use up leftovers and they did taste a lot nicer than when we use stock cubes.

  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?

We're definitely going to buy the gravy pots again as they gravy they make is very rich and tasty, but not really with leftovers. The stock pots really give rice and pasta dishes more depth of flavour and its those kind of dishes that we use leftovers in.

  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?

I'd recommend both the stock and gravy pots to friends, but not necessarily just for leftovers as they make a good substitute for stock cubes for everything.

JustCallMeBaldrick · 06/01/2014 21:19
  1. Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?
I liked both the gravy and stock pots, as they were easy to use, and tasted better than the cubes/gravy powder I usually end up using last-minute!
  1. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?
I have used the gravy pots for doing cold meat and chips type meals, as well as the Christmas dinner! The stock pots have been used in soups, mince-based dishes and a chicken pie. All (except the Xmas dinner) used leftovers.
  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?
They did, as I would probably not have felt as inspired to use up the leftovers, and they would have ended up being thrown away.
  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?
I will probably use them use them again as they are easy to use.
  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?
I would, as I have enjoyed using them in my cooking. The kids have also enjoyed helping squeeze them out of he pots. Apparently it's more fun than crumbling stock cubes!
Cherryjellybean · 06/01/2014 21:43

Non tester:
We had lots of meals like turkey, with cheese boards, left over cranberry sauce, salad, olives, crisps etc. sounds weird but it works :)

My mum makes a mushed up pie, all meet and veg in a pie with stock, tastes lovely!

kateandme · 07/01/2014 00:59

we have had
urkey and veg omelette
bubble and squeek
balti turkey currey
turkey and ham in white sauce

insanityscatching · 07/01/2014 06:43

1 Which of the Knorr products did you like best and why?
I like the rich beef stock best because it gives a depth of flavour to soups, stews and gravies.

  1. What did you make with your Stock Pots, Gravy Pots and Christmas leftovers?
I made potato soup, turkey and mushroom pie and the turkey meatloaf that went down a storm.
  1. Do you think that the Stock Pots helped you use up your Christmas leftovers and minimise waste? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes they did because they added flavour and gave a good base to dishes and the gravy pots are convenient and time saving too
  1. Do you think you’ll use Knorr products more often in the future to use up your leftovers with? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I'll continue to use them as I have been using them prior to the test anyway
  1. If it came up in conversation, would you recommend Knorr Stock Pots as a way to use up your leftovers to friends and family? If so, why? If not, why not?
Yes I've already passed on the turkey meatloaf recipe to dsis along with a couple of stock and gravy pots and she likes them too.
RubyRR · 07/01/2014 13:42

1)I liked the veg stock pots, I have found them great to make soup with using left over vegetables.
2)Risotto,soup, more soup and a bolognese style casserole type thing to use up leftover beef, it was popular with everyone, I'm not convinced I could make the same again due to my chuck it all in and hope for the best ingredient list.
3)I can't afford to waste food, the hamper provided more variety and I put more effort into thinking what I could do with what I had.
4) I'm most likely to use the veg stock pots again. The gravy pots have been useful, usually I have to sieve my gravy!
5) I've mentioned them to a few people, doesn't really grab them in conversation but I'm very pleased I got to try them. I was surprised there wasn't a lamb one, I was hoping for an excuse to buy lamb.

hanbee · 07/01/2014 13:53

Our favourite way of using up left over roast turkey or chicken is to use it in pasta recipe. We have several family members who say they don't like left over meat but do enjoy it in a pasta sauce.

Different combos we do are:

carbonara with poultry sn andd bacon

baked pasta with tomato, mozzarella spinach and poultry.
Chicken and pesto pasta.

Tester here:

  1. our favourites were the beef, vegetable and gravy pots. The gravy pots were tasty and easy to use - lovely with the meat juices. Vegetable was so versatile.
  2. we made; vegetable soup, gravy for a roast dinner, turkey curry and a stew. Leftovers were the soup and curry.
  3. it did help us use up the leftovers and minimise waste. We had two Christmas dinners due to my husband working. It encouraged us not to through the veg in the bin.
  4. we will use them in the future. They are easy to use and tasty. Great to add a bit of flavour to left over veg.
  5. I would recommend them although I echo thought about about the salt content. It's also a shame they aren't all gluten free. However, they are handy, tasty and easy to use. There will always be some in my stock cupboard.

Thank you for letting me be a tester.

lorka · 08/01/2014 11:47
